At the 2021 Edinburgh TV Festival, the BBC and Netflix unveiled what the pair described as a landmark five-year disability partnership that would unearth a new generation of shows helmed by disabled talent.

But more than half of the partnership’s five-year time period has now elapsed and not one show has been revealed.

In recent months, sources from the UK drama and disabled TV communities have begun questioning the partnership, getting in touch with Deadline unprompted to query why a tie-up that was unveiled with such fanfare has so far failed to bear fruit.

“A good procedural is like comfort food: consistently satisfying,” says Erin Underhill, president of Universal TV.

The familiarity of the format makes procedurals easy to watch — even if the stories themselves are often dark and anxiety-inducing. NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU,” one of the most successful of its kind, revolves around detectives tasked with securing justice for sexual assault victims. In her role as Capt. Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay is a heroic figure on screen and off, given her 25 seasons (and counting) on the air.

“They are successful because our viewers see them as comfort television. They don’t disappoint you, and you want to keep coming back,” says producer Dick Wolf.

This actually made me squeal with glee!

It's being developed for AppleTV+ and was apparently greenlit a year ago, but this is the first I've heard of it, so apologies if it's old news for some. They've cast Alexander Skarsgard as Murderbot.

Story here.

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.

From executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of Westworld, starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and more. Arriving April 12 on Prime Video.

Excerpt: Sources said that episodic writers are now being paid a large fee upfront rather than a smaller fee plus residuals that has seen previous scribes earn additional compensation when Doctor Who is repeated. [...]

Ellie Peers, General Secretary of the Writers Guild of Great Britain, told Deadline: “As a trade union we take our responsibilities in negotiations very seriously and this involves being in full possession of the facts before taking up issues with broadcasters and others, both privately and publicly. The terms outlined to us by Deadline, if true, would represent a serious retrograde step for UK writers working on Doctor Who.”

Inspired by yesterday's Speak Up Saturday question: Here's a Vulture list of all the shows that, so far, have been canceled in 2023. Which cancellation has hit you the hardest? Or maybe there are potential future cancellations that you're quietly dreading?

Shows I'm mourning: Dead End: Paranormal Park and the planned Six of Crows spinoff. I'm also a little worried over Good Omens because it's Jeff Bezos and I need a third TV season, not a novel or a comic.

Saw a tweet this morning that said all of Classic Doctor Who is now on Tubi (which I believe is only available in the US and Canada). You can indeed browse through them all here. And here is a brief article from Gizmodo about the news.

I've only ever seen the newer seasons, so I'll probably check these out when I have time. If anyone has any recommendations about which Doctors to definitely check out, please feel free to share! (I've heard a lot about the Fourth so I might start with that one myself)

While the Hollywood writers strike is over, the actors are still on the picket line, so delays in the production of new and returning shows are a given. Alan Sepinwall, the TV critic for Rolling Stone magazine, produced a list of "20 Overlooked TV Shows to Stream During the Strike-Affected Fall Season". Granted, it's aimed at a US audience, so some of these may not be options for non-USians. Have you already watched any of his recommended shows? Do any of them sound interesting to you? Are you surprised to see any of these considered "overlooked"?

According to PopCrave, a The Office reboot will reportedly be announced once the strikes are lifted.

Any opinions? What do you think about reboots in general? Which did you (dis)like? Are there any reboots you would like to see?
