If You’re Reading This, Your Favorite Show Is Canceled

Inspired by yesterday's Speak Up Saturday question: Here's a Vulture list of all the shows that, so far, have been canceled in 2023. Which cancellation has hit you the hardest? Or maybe there are potential future cancellations that you're quietly dreading?

Shows I'm mourning: Dead End: Paranormal Park and the planned Six of Crows spinoff. I'm also a little worried over Good Omens because it's Jeff Bezos and I need a third TV season, not a novel or a comic.

The Company You Keep was uneven and very different from the kdrama it was adapted from, but I thought it was just getting good. Plus, I really enjoyed that it was more episodic than a lot of series today.

Yeah, this one wouldn't have been my first pick for an adaptation either, but I think the general concept of the series is one that translates well, since it doesn't rely as much on cultural context as some other dramas.

AKA Why no one reacted to the 'the strike might lead to your shows being cancelled' articles. Shows are mostly poorly developed and pumped out to see if one sticks. Netflix just grabs IPs, uses them, and discards them before ending the storyline.

The one that baffles me was Midnight Club back in 2022. It was only supposed to be two seasons Mike Flanagan is moving to Amazon. They have a pointless half a show instead of a full show from one of their best known creators who made some of their top shows.

Most of the shows on that list I've never even heard of, so totally indifferent to their cancellation. Of the few that I have actually watched, there are really only two that I'm disappointed won't be coming back with another season, and that's The Peripheral, and Rabbit Hole.

Avenue 5 I knew ages ago that it had been cancelled, so I'm over that one. I loved the first couple of seasons of Doom Patrol, but then lost interest, so meh. I thought Reboot was fun, but again, wasn't that invested in it. Ditto for The Afterparty. It's too bad The Great won't be coming back, but again, that's old news and I've moved on.

I don't get all "fannish" about shows, so cancellations are just the reality of TV land. I am momentarily disappointed when a show I like gets cancelled, but then I move on to something else.

That article is slighty incorrect. Pantheon has a second season and its on Prime (in Australia, anyway.)

But in terms of shows I will miss, The big one is Doom Patrol. I loved that show and the characters so much and I will miss them all. But we got a good ending, and I feel like the story was told, so I can't complain too much.

Otherwise, it's 1899 and Star Trek: Prodigy. The latter was a really good Star Trek story that probably did an amazing job of introducing star trek to younger people. As for 1899 I was really annoyed that it was cancelled. It was made by the same people who created Dark which was amazing, and Im sure 1899 would have been too given a bit more time.

There were some others on the list I will miss but not as much as those already mentioned.

I thought Prodigy got uncancelled, it sucks if it got recancelled (can't get the Vulture page to load) https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/star-trek-prodigy-season-2-netflix-1235752032/ posted October 11 2023.
It's a great way to introduce younger people to Trek, my nephews enjoyed it and I watched and liked it too.

There's a few I had planned to check out or return to (once I subscribed to that streamer again) and I watched a number of those shows. However I was ok with most of them being cancelled. The one I'm really sorry about is Alaska Daily. That was a good show with a lot of places it could go.

The only one I was watching and one of the few I even recognized on that list was Doom Patrol and I will miss it.

I enjoyed season 1 of The Company You Keep, but the ones there I'm really sad about are A League of Their Own, which was AMAZING, and The Peripheral. *sadface*

FWIW, the season does have a satisfying ending. I highly recommend it! :-)

I'm struck by the sure number of television series that are currently on. I've not heard of or seen half of these.

Not surprised by the cancellation of Shadow and Bone - it felt completed, and wasn't getting much buzz. Am disappointed by the loss of Six of Crows spinoff - that would have been excellent. But not surprised - Netflix is fickle. Good Omens is probably safe - because it's done very very well - and Amazon is into anything that does well on its platform, and to date that's kind of limited? I think it has maybe four series that have done well? Mrs. Maizel, Good Omens, Daisy and the Six, and maybe Wheel of Time?

Jack Ryan did well on Amazon so I'm surprised they ended that (still ongoing discussions about a spinoff?). Terminal List seemed to do ok and Jack Reacher is about to add season 2. But I don't think others have done so well.

1.) Jack Ryan wasn't cancelled by Amazon. The star of it, is busy, and bored of playing the role, and was only signed on for four seasons. (This is typical of a lot of in-demand actors by the way. Few want to be stuck in a role for more than a few years. A lot of television series end because the lead actors don't want to continue - and some even break their contracts. It limits their ability to play other types of roles, to direct, etc. If you are in-demand, you don't want to be stuck in one role for too long. It's why in-demand actors will only do limited theaterical runs, and often only commit to a few seasons of a television series.)

Why did Jack Ryan end so abruptly? Krasinski only signed on for four seasons

Per the article, Amazon could continue it with a spin-off. They've never really acknowledged that it is ending.

2. Good Omens did very well and has a third season coming.

Here's Good Omens getting a S3

"Neil Gaiman fantasy series Good Omens is looking good to land a Season 3 renewal by Amazon and the BBC, I hear. In anticipation of the order for what will likely be the show’s last chapter, the options on the series’ main cast, led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, have been picked up, sources said."

The Boys, and Jack Ryan are definitely in there. I'm just not into either of them so keep forgetting they exist. LOL.

The Expanse is an odd one - since it was a Syfy series that Syfy cancelled and Amazon picked up thinking it would take off.

Shadow and Bone was supposed to follow the book trilogy so it sucks and sucks worse we won't see more of the Crows the best part of the show imho. Good Omens I'm still waiting on watching s2 and I'd feel about watching if I knew it had ben renewed.
Can't get the Vulture page to load right now but there might be others on there I know.

I've never heard of most of these shows so I won't miss them.

I'm not surprised that Shadow and Bone is cancelled; if anything I thought we already knew it was. The second season rushed through the second and third books, leaving the impression that Netflix had given them only that season to wrap everything up. I will miss the Crows, and hold out hope that the rumors of a Six of Crows spin-off might still come to fruition.

Home Economics was a fun little family show. It's not shocking that it didn't have good ratings, but what even does have good ratings on network television anymore? I suspect I'll miss it the most of all the shows listed here. It wasn't the sort of show I rushed to the TV to see, but it was always pleasant to watch a new episode. Oh well.

The only one I watched on that list was Perry Mason; its cancellation was announced some time ago so I knew already. But it was a huge bummer when it was cancelled. I love that era of historical drama, and Perry Mason was sooo good. And Matthew Rhys! But it was a slow show and went a couple years between the first two seasons so I think it just had no audience.

This huge list of cancellations is exhibit A as to why people aren't bothering to watch much new TV anymore. Most of it gets cancelled. :(
