7 Underrated Shows You Could Watch On Halloween
I'm not sure they are actually underrated. Tried to choose titles that I rarely see recommended online.
Ares (Dutch)
Aiming to become part of Amsterdam's elite, an ambitious college student joins an exclusive society, unaware it's hiding a horrifying secret.
Personal opinion: An atmospheric, suspenseful slow-burn. Really enjoyed the cinematography.
Brand New Cherry Flavor
A filmmaker heads to Hollywood in the early '90s to make her movie but tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge — and kittens.
Personal opinion: Strange, freaky, and colorful in the best of ways. Beware of the kittens.
Swarm
Dre is obsessed with a pop star, whose fanbase is known as "The Swarm". The show is a deep dive into Dre's life, her desire, her fandom, and how it takes her to dark, unexpected places.
Personal opinion: Violent and weird. It surprised me many times over. In a good way.
Strangers From Hell (Korean)
Yoon Jong-Woo, an aspiring crime fiction writer in his twenties, moves to Seoul in search of a better life. Cash-strapped, he resorts to living in a tiny communal residence named Eden Studio, alongside some eerie tenants.
Personal opinion: The closest you will ever come to a (less gay) Korean Hannibal. Still, a truly wild ride that is definitely worth a look!
Dead End: Paranormal Park
Meet Barney, his dog Pugsley (who can now walk and talk after an exorcism gone wrong-- it’s a long story!), Norma, and a thousand-year-old sardonic demon named Courtney who must work together to battle paranormal scares, and maybe... just maybe, save the world!
Personal opinion: Super charming, fun show with a trans main character (Barney) and some queer storylines.
Marianne (French)
When a novelist realizes her terrifying stories are coming true, she returns to her hometown to face the demons from her past that inspire her writing.
Personal opinion: I simply loved everything about this show's creepy atmosphere. Haven't seen a lot that hit me hard in a similar manner as this one.
The Horror of Dolores Roach
After an unjust 16-year prison sentence, Dolores Roach returns to a gentrified Washington Heights. There she reunites with an old stoner friend who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, “Magic Hands” Dolores is driven to shocking extremes.
Personal opinion: Sweeney Todd, set in Washington Heights. This show was great, ridiculous fun.
What underrated shows would you recommend for Halloween? Non-English shows are (obviously) very welcome as long as there are English subtitles available! This also includes animated shows.
