Thank you to everyone who contributed during [community profile] tv_talk’s Rec Fest! These posts are now linked to from a community sticky post, as well as the community profile. They remain open for contributions at any time, and we hope when you find a show you consider a really great watch that you add an entry for it at one of the posts.

Sadly this month we will be saying goodbye to our mod [personal profile] misbegotten, who wants to thank everyone for helping make the community such a friendly and informative space. Speaking personally, I really appreciate the time and thought she’s contributed to community planning and activities and am glad I had her feedback and help.

Fortunately we will have a new mod joining in over the next few weeks, [personal profile] feurioo! Please feel free to reach out to me or [personal profile] feurioo now or in the future if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about the comm!

Regular posting of TV Tuesday and Speak Up Saturday will resume this week.

Welcome to [community profile] tv_talk!

This is a community for people to share and discover TV shows they enjoy, which we do via regular discussion posts and contributors making meta, reviews or other posts related to TV shows and viewing.

In 2025 we held a Rec Fest which can be added to at any time by community participants. These recs were divided into the following genres:

Family Viewing and Children's Shows
Comedies
Dramas
SciFi or Fantasy
Mysteries or Horror
Romances
Miscellaneous

If you have any questions about adding recs, just drop a comment on the Rec Fest FAQ post. And we'd love for you to take a rec/leave a rec!

Hopefully everyone has been selecting some shows to rec next week! As this will be our first go at this, we wanted to set up this post for any questions people have (now or after the fest starts).

A post will be going out each day beginning Sunday with the genre(s) of the day and information on what to include in your recs. This would be:

Show Title:
Audience Rating: Young Children/All Ages/Teen and Up/Mature Content
Warnings: (Could include gory content, raunchy situations, explicit sex, offensive content, etc.)
Length of Episodes: (30 minutes/1 hour/Other)
Length of Series: (Number of seasons or number of episodes)
Why you recommend it: (What draws you to it? What niche does it fill/mood is it good for?)

You can copy and paste the following code into your comment.

Feel free to include any other information you’d like, such as what year(s) the show was originally broadcast, standout cast members, or what other shows it may connect to or be similar to. You can also include outside links to Wikipedia, Fanlore, IMDB, your favorite review etc. which contain more show information.

If you have a question about making a recommendation, please post here, and also check here to see if the question has already been answered!

Our schedule will be:

Sunday: Family viewing/Children's Shows
Monday: Comedies
Tuesday: Dramas
Wednesday: Sci Fi/Fantasy
Thursday: Mysteries or Horror
Friday: Romances (shows that focus on a couple or romance theme, even if they cross into other genres)
Saturday: Miscellaneous (any shows you don't think fit the other categories!)

Hope to see your recs soon!

Do you prefer short seasons for your shows, long seasons, or no seasons at all, like soap operas that go on without a clear break? What do you consider the minimum number of episodes to make up an effective season of a TV show?

Also, an announcement! Starting January 12 the mods would like to kick off a weeklong rec fest. Although people do rec shows on other days, we thought a tagged recs event would help newcomers find shows they might enjoy more easily.

So for 7 days of genres we'll have Sunday: Family viewing/Children's Shows, Monday: Comedies, Tuesday: Dramas, Wednesday: Sci Fi/Fantasy, Thursday: Mysteries or Horror, Friday: Romances, and Saturday: Miscellaneous (any shows you don't think fit the other categories!)

We hope you'll put together some recs to share over the next month -- they can be shows you've discussed before in other [community profile] tv_talk posts, new things you've just tried out, or shows others have recced before!

After reviewing the results from last week's spoilers discussion post, the mods decided to implement a very broad spoiler policy. There was complete consensus that spoiler protection should apply to posts but that comments would generally be fair game. However what constituted a spoiler had more variation, with at least some people finding that all the examples offered were spoilery.

Therefore we're proposing the following:

a) Spoiler free posts may only contain high level information about a series or non-detailed discussion of TV themes.

b) Comments are 'read at your own risk' unless the author of the post asks you to refrain from spoilers in the comments.

c) If a post contains any specific details about a show it must be spoiler protected by using one or more cut tags. Before the cut tag, note that what follows contains spoilers for an episode number, or a season, or the series as a whole (whichever applies).

We think this will be the simplest way of addressing spoilers in a community which will be discussing a wide variety of programming. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Many thanks to [personal profile] colls for offering to pass on this community to new mods, and for keeping it open! [personal profile] misbegotten and I are looking forward to getting some activity going, both in this community and also in other TV fandom communities on Dreamwidth.

This space has been used in different ways over the years, and while we would like to continue some of them, we also think that TV viewing has changed a lot since [community profile] tv_talk began. Shows are shorter, more scattered, with long hiatuses and uncertain returns (even, sometimes, when renewed!) There are also many more of them than there used to be, making it less likely that many people will be watching the same ones -- at least at the same time.

So we want to make this a space for fans to find one another as much as one where we're focused on a lot of posts being made. This is what we're planning: Read more... )

Hello! I don't know if it was because DW/LJ was slowing down or if it was the changing television habits, but somehow we drifted away from talking about TV shows in this space.

I'm still here. I still like TV. And I'd still like to talk about shows I'm watching. Based on the increased activity I'm seeing on DW, I don't think I'm alone. (or maybe I am - LOL)
Anyway, I think we should resuscitate this community and start talking. What do you think?

Would anyone out there be willing to help me out with three things? (feel free to browse older entries for ideas)

1) If you where building DW television discussion community, what elements would you include?
2) What sort of posts/activities would inspire you to participate?
3) Do you have any suggestions or ideas for structure or format?

FYI - I want this community to be open forum - meaning just because we develop some structure or have scheduled posts, people are always welcome to come post about any TV show at any time.

And... just so this post isn't all boring business, we should maybe socialize as well, and get this thing started out right. :D

Name
What TV have you been watching?
What genre(s) of TV do you like best?
Link something cool you've seen on tumblr/dw/lj lately!
