The Office (US) Reboot In The Works

According to PopCrave, a The Office reboot will reportedly be announced once the strikes are lifted.

Any opinions? What do you think about reboots in general? Which did you (dis)like? Are there any reboots you would like to see?

You know...I feel like we've been listening to big and small voices from the picket lines...and still have to deal with recycling?!?!?! I'm sick and tired of it. Why is the small screen so disgustingly unoriginal? Write something new, blow my socks off, thrill us, impress us, make us think. Bring back complicated stories and complicated characters.

Bah. I'm over it.

I've been trying to think of any rebooted shows that I've watched, and I've only come up with Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii 5-O -- in both cases, I'd never seen the original, and a few episodes of the new version of Night Court. The others were revivals rather than reboots: the X-Files, Twin Peaks, Leverage, Murphy Brown (only watched a couple of episodes -- it was pretty bad). That said, I'd prefer original programming. If people are truly devoid of original ideas, there is no shortage of novels out there that could be adapted for TV. And that goes for spin-offs as well (e.g all the FBI spin-offs, the various NCIs shows, all the Law and Orders, etc.). The one exception to that is Star Trek. You cannot have too many Star Treks.

I feel like there's two kinds of shows going on -- ones that are continuations of a previous show (or movie), and ones that are reboots of shows.

I think that reboots can be a good way of interrogating the original stories (see the latest and now cancelled Wonder Years) but something like The Office (and there are no details) just seem particularly ridiculous when the original show hardly seems gone.

I tried out The Full Monty's show, which I thought was a rather good idea given the focus of the movie and the time elapsed. Unfortunately I couldn't get into it as it was alternately irritating and depressing. I do think the creators had a statement to make though about how little things have changed since the movie's time.

Given the way the last couple seasons of The Office went...not a ton of faith in a reboot. Also, it didn't even end that long ago? I admit I enjoyed the Perry Mason reboot, but that was also a show that ended decades ago, so they were reaching an entirely new audience with it (me, vs. my mom who watched the original). Still sad that one got cancelled.

but the original wasn't even that good to begin with...

i joke, but personal opinion aside, i feel like reboots are inevitable? like all media is inspired by other media and eventually someone is gonna wanna make another, more updated version or an older, beloved movie/tv show/musical/etc

the problem is when you're rebooting shows that are not even +20 years old, especially now with streaming services putting up older shows on their sites. like i believe netflix had the office just a little while ago? loads of people literally watched this version recently, there's no need to reboot it unless they have a fun new spin for it, and if it's good enough you can just make a completely new workplace-sitcom-type of show instead of rehashing the exact same format over and over again. and this was already a reboot of a show from the uk, are there really absolutely no other ideas?

i would absolutely love a game of thrones reboot though lmao. i mean more like a new, more faithful asoiaf adaptation, but it would be considered a reboot too probably. there's a couple more years of waiting for that one though

I agree with the general sentiment of the other commenters. It's really annoying at this point that so many shows released lately are reboots, remakes, or even reboots of remakes. The Office is already a remake of a British show. I'm aware that it was longer and became more popular than the original, but my point is, how many times can they do this? And, as the commenter above me said, the shows they reboot/remake keep being more and more recent. For example, when I heard about the Gossip Girl reboot, I thought to myself 'is that show THAT old?' Of course it wasn't! It just seems so unnecessary.

Yikes! Instead of reboots, there should be original shows.

I'm not really into reboots, I must say. When I want to watch a show, I watch the original.

There's one exception for me tho, and that's the Dynasty reboot. I really enjoyed that one, but it still doesn't beat the campy original for me.
