I've been having an incredible time watching Severance; it's the best new show I've seen in years, and a very strong candidate for my favourite show of all time. In case anyone's curious about whether they should watch it, here's a non-spoilery overview!

What is the concept of Severance?

Wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to remember work? If you got all the money and benefits without the actual experience of working? With Lumon's proprietary severance technology, that can be a reality.

When you're in the Lumon office, you won't remember anything from outside it, so you can focus completely on your work. When you leave at the end of the day, your memories of work will vanish. No more lying awake, obsessing over that project; your work can't intrude on your personal life when you don't even remember it. It's the perfect way to preserve the work-life balance.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: What am I actually doing at work?
A: That's the great thing: you'll never know!

Q: What's life like for the version of me in the office? The one who doesn't remember their free time or childhood or friends or family? The one who leaves the office at the end of the day and, from their perspective, steps straight back into it and has to get right back to work?
A: Look, don't worry about it. Your work self is doing just fine.

Wait, Severance and Succession are different shows?

I was surprised too!

American Gothic was a short-lived attempt at an HBO style supernatural horror show, with an ensemble cast, pitch dark humor, philosophical depth, religious themes, depraved villains, questionable heroes, kinky sex and a slowly advancing epic plot centered on the battle of good and evil... airing on CBS. In 1995.

Honestly, the shock isn't its cancellation after a 22 episode run, but the fact that it made it that far. American Gothic is amazing, and I fell in love with it very quickly, mainlining it in two weeks. It sits in my top five, right alongside Buffy/Angel, Highlander, Jeremiah and 12 Monkeys and I'll be singing its praises in as vague a fashion as I can in this post (which I was invited to crosspost here), but I'll also directly cover some of the stuff making it a tricky show for me to recommend. Plot: When her mother keeps pressuring her to marry, an unwilling Sakuko decides to move out of her family home. She ends up cohabiting with Satoru, another aromantic asexual. Together, both must confront the expectations, assumptions, and prejudices of Sakuko's environment and find a way to secure their own identity in a world that seems to challenge their concepts of family and happiness at every turn.

TV Primers are a great way to generate interest in a show you're watching and/or find fellow fans. Please see topic: primer tag for examples done in the past, although don't feel restricted to any particular format - the format is entirely up to the poster.

Standard rules of the community apply (ie. no bashing, warn/cut for spoilers, etc.)

What's a Primer?
(*stealing Recycling verbage from [personal profile] timetobegin's post.....)
Its an introduction to a show that remains mostly spoiler-free, so people get thinking about watching it. You should include

- The show and basic plot
- The main characters
- Fun things about the show people should know.
- Perhaps where to find the show?

If you're interested in doing a primer, PLEASE DO. Comment here if you wanna let people know which show you're doing (in case someone else decides too as well) And go ahead and post when you're ready.

I hope everyone's having a great weekend! :)

Orphan Black has been renewed for a third season!

Factoid 2: Season 2 premieres on 19 April, 132 years to the day that Charles Darwin died. Intriguing coincidence ...)

Orphan Black Primer

 Premise

Sarah Manning, a young woman with a less-than-ideal life, witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks exactly like her. Impulsively stealing the dead woman's purse, she decides to take over her identity, only to find that she and her doppelganger are clones -- and they're not the only ones. As Sarah begins to meet up with the other clones, she discovers that there are powerful forces intent on controlling, destroying, or exploiting them.

Why Watch?

As you might guess from the cast photo, factoids, and premise, this is a smart, sexy show, driven in equal parts by plot and characterization.

"Oh, but, clones? Really? All played by the same actress? Too gimmicky!"

Most of us have had the experience of watching a movie or TV series where the special effects are so front-and-center that they keep taking you out of the story as you're watching, thinking "Wow, cool idea!" or "Wow, cool effect!"  ... While there's nothing wrong with  such meta-commentary, it's an exhilarating experience when the inverse happens, when the story and characters sweep you up so completely that you barely notice the SFX supporting them.

Orphan Black is that type is experience for many of its fans. While most go into it knowing it's a sci-fi thriller about clones, its "gimmick" being that they're all played by a single actress (Tatiana Maslany), by the time you see scenes that require two, three, or more of those characters on screen and interacting at the same time, it's likely that your brain has giddily suspended disbelief and will see, not a genuine marvel of acting and camera work, but distinct characters. (You'll frequently see fans saying, "I keep forgetting she plays all of them!")

Don't just take my word for it - Google Orphan Black, and you'll see dozens of "why you should be watching" type articles.

Dallas: A Primer & Homebase

Isn't that the show from the 80s with the shoulder pads and the who shot J.R.?

Yes. Yes, it is. The same show. Not a remake, but a continuation with many of the same characters and actors. But fear not: you can absolutely watch it and love the crap out of it without having seen any or all of the fourteen seasons that came before. In fact, I'm going to write this assuming you haven't seen the original, but if you're a fan and you want to know how something fits in, I'll be glad to answer questions in the comments.

Nashville : A Primer

Yes, it's the show that your grandmother watches. No, it's not a just a serious version of Psych.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way...
"How am I supposed to know who you are? You're banging on my door: 'CBI! CBI!' Like that's supposed to mean something?"
"Yeah, we do need better brand awareness."

-- 1x21 "Blood Brothers"

The Mentalist is a CBS show about the Serious Crimes Unit of the California Bureau of Investigation and the titular mentalist who works as their consultant. They are "like the FBI, only more conveniently located" and offer their assistance in murder cases that are difficult, or just high-profile, when they're not tracking down the serial killer Red John.

The show is on the smarter and more liberal end of the procedural spectrum, and though on the surface it's more cute and whimsical than realistic and gritty, it has a dark and disturbing underbelly like some unholy union between Castle and Dexter.

Also, it has one of the most messed up main characters on primetime TV.

It's easy to write off Orphan Black as "that clone show," but if you have any smidgen of interest in starting a new show and you enjoy tightly paced dramas with original premises, fantastic casts and production values, (Katja's wig notwithstanding) as well as some truly shocking-yet-not-totally-absurd plot twists, this post is for you!

Trigger warning for suicide and drug (ab)use.

If you've always wanted to start watching, but didn't know where to jump in, or if you are unsure if you want to watch a show about a bunch of hairy, tattooed bikers, let me explain you a thing.
