Empire premieres on January 7 on Fox.

Based in part on William Shakespeare's King Lear and James Goldman's The Lion in Winter, the show centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Enterprises, and the drama among the members of the founders' family as they fight for control of the company. This hugely successful conglomerate is run by Lucious, a street thug—turned—rap superstar recently diagnosed with ALS, who knows he must choose his eventual successor from among his three sons. As the company is about to go public on the New York Stock Exchange, Cookie, Lucious's ex-wife, emerges from a 17-year stint in the slammer for running illegal drugs — the profits of which went to the creation of Empire Entertainment. Cookie, who knows she can bring down Lucious with one juicy leak to the press, wants what she feels is her fair share of the company. That would be half.

The series begins with Becca on the eve of her second wedding. It all seems perfect this time around, but she is still plagued by doubt. If only she could talk to her once again… Suddenly, after a freakish elevator ride, Becca gets the opportunity to do just that as she wakes up in New York City on the morning of her first wedding day in 1995.
