Makes sense about watching Blue Bloods. It can be odd how a streamer will have some seasons but not others. I find it frustrating that a number of things I watch on Hulu go away. The latest Jeopardy shows are only available for 5 days. And many of the current shows will only have 1 or 2 seasons available, even if they've run for 10 years.

Sorry about missing the HBO telenovela.

Ah, a remake. Hopefully you'll get another chance.

Yes, while I do it for financial reasons as well, the yearly rotation I do through the streamers is a must because there's always something on each one I want to see. Although I understand quite a few of them are selling their content to "live TV" streamers like Tubi or the Roku channels. Plus if they don't own the IP then it may stay with a streamer for a year or two and then go somewhere else. It's definitely a job to track things!

Sim.

This past week I pretty much binged The Beauty, and absolutely loved it. It's about two FBI agents investigating the spread of a sexually transmitted disease that transforms infected parties into physically perfect specimens -- before it makes them spectacularly dead. I've seen it described as body horror, and it does bring to mind the Demi Moore flick, The Substance, but it's also satire, funny, at times over the top, a bit sci-fi-ish and just loads and loads of fun. The only negative thing I will say about it is that it ends on a spectacular cliff-hanger (ARGH!), and there's no word yet about a season 2 (DOUBLE ARGH!!). But that aside, I highly recommend it, unless you're easily grossed out by special effects.

That's the only new thing I watched. Otherwise it was weekly episodes of current shows, e.g. FBI, Will Trent, High Potential, Law and Order Toronto, Allegiance, The Pitt and Outlander. I enjoyed this week's ep of Outlander more than last week's, which I found a bit... disjointed or something. It was also Catriona Balfe's directorial debut, but I don't know that my issues with the episode were because of her direction choices, or if it was just the episode in general.

I am looking forward to For All Mankind, which starts on March 27, and I think I will start in on season 4 of Dark Winds as most of the season will be available by the end of the week.

Hmm, I might find myself grossed out about it. Maybe will wait and see about a second season.

It's a little frustrating that we never got around to seeing Dark Winds on Netflix, but my partner didn't have the time and we started watching the series together back when we got AMC via YouTube.

We watch a lot of the same shows. Who is streaming For All Mankind? Dark Winds has been so good this season. And I'm loving Will Trent this season, also. High Potential is starting to get really good.

Jeopardy is having its Celebrity Champions Tournament, only 2 episodes so far -- best I can tell is that they air on Fridays. Caught up on the daily stuff, including Colbert and Daily Show.

Also watched the Sally Ride documentary and finished the latest season of Call the Midwife. But everything else is still in process -- the JFKJR & Caroline series, The Puzzle Lady, Count of Monte Cristo, The Gold, and All Creatures Great and Small. Finished the first story in Bookish, but the partner seems to be interested in more so we'll probably finish that at some point. Have watched a smattering more of Paradise but I'm close to giving up on it.

Started Happiness but am not very enthused. I'm liking it more as it goes on, though the way so many characters are turned up to 10 is a little much for me. What I am liking quite a lot are the musical numbers themselves. If more kids learned history like this, they might remember it.

Also am several episodes into Wonder Man and am not feeling very enthusiastic about that either though am loving Ben Kingsley in this part.

Also saw Zootopia2, which I liked, and Life of Chuck which was a very nice watch.

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-22 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I had somewhat the same reaction to Wonder Man, and ended up giving up on it. It kept putting me to sleep or my attention would wander. I think I've seen too many satires on Hollywood, and outside of the Ben Kingsley character - none were holding my interest? It felt like it was trying too hard to be clever...which I've noticed as a pattern in a lot of Disney Marvel shows of late. Too much focus on being experimental or clever - and not enough on developing interesting characters. I had the same issues with Moon Knight, Iron Heart, Secret Invasion, She Hulk and Loki. Wanda Vision and Agatha All Along - I felt were the only ones who accomplished it well.

Where's Happiness streaming?

I managed to get caught up on everything today. That doesn't really mean anything since I'm going on vacation tomorrow and will be two weeks behind afterwards. That includes the start of Daredevil: Born Again and finale of Paradise.

Speaking of, I had two episodes of Paradise to watch. People don't talk about it as much anymore, but I think this season is just as good as S1. I'm happy it was renewed for a third season.

I'm kinda surprised, but I honestly love Scrubs. I still think that it fits perfectly into the established canon while doing a good job of adding new characters without focusing too much on them.

Yeah, it's pretty great if you don't have that much time. That's actually how I got through the original run faster than I thought. Just watch an episode if you have ~20 minutes to spare lol

Questions

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-22 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've a few questions on the films?

The Bride - which niche? Because I can do niche - but not all niches.

Project Hail Mary - can you watch if you are an arachnophobic? (Fear of spiders).

**
I wish I'd seen Sinners in the theater with surround sound. That film's best qualities are its score and cinematography - it really has amazing cinematography. I do have a 55 inch television screen - but still.

**

Question on The Rooster:
What other comedies has Bill Lawrence done? Trying to figure out if I'd like Rooster or not? Steve Carroll comedies are often hit or miss for me. (ie. Is it witty or slapstick? Is it embarrassment/humilation humor or absurd humor?)

What other comedies has Bill Lawrence done?

Scrubs, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Cougar Town, Bad Monkey, Spin City would be the best known, probably.

The Guardian described it as "blissfully awkward".

Looking forward to watching The Pitt (this week's episode) and The Peaky Blinders flick on Netflix.
(Peaky Blinders is my family's fav - my brother, my mother and I all adore it and mother and I are in love with Cillian Murphy.)

Also looking forward to Daredevil Born Again - S2 on March 24 and starting the Forysthe Saga on PBS Passporte.

Watching Grantchester, Virgin River, and a rewatch of Veronica Mars (which I have no memory of - but I'd watched, and rewatched part of just a year ago...which either says something about Veronica Mars or what my work place is doing to my television memory banks. On the bright side? I can rewatch television series?) And completing my Angel S5 rewatch.

I tried the first episode of Scapetta? It gave me a headache. I found it unwatchable. It admittedly has several things that don't work for me in a television show or film or I despise: 1) Misogynistic serial killer with gory killings (I can't watch that any longer - those days are gone), and we get flashes on how he tortured and killed his victims while the forensic detective examines the bodies. 2) Overly theatrical/hammy performances - this by Jamie Lee Curtis, even her wardrobe is over the top - I've seen people do this well, Curtis gave me a headache. 3) Too many flashbacks, we flash back to the past case which this case strongly echoes, we flash back to the murders, we flash back to the family drama now and in the past. Too busy. 4) Family melodrama taken up to the highest volume, and they are all very wealthy - and in the same house. 5) AI Chat Robot Character...seen mainly on the computer screen.

Taken individually? Any of those would might give me a headache - together.... So no. Not my thing.

Damn. Buffy and Angel were good. They don't make shows like that any longer. I miss them. Even Veronica Mars doesn't come close. Also, Hulu cancelled the Buffy reboot because it wasn't "mainstream" enough for Hulu and apparently too woke? And the big exec didn't like Buffy. Boo Hiss.
So still disappointed about that. I don't understand why they can't cancel the Bachelor franchise and put the money towards reviving the Buffy franchise? Oh well, at least we might get an animated continuation of Firefly.

[personal profile] pattrose 2026-03-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Boy, do I agree with you about the number of flashbacks. I love Jamie Lee Curtis, but not in this at all. I watched two episodes, and to me it got worse than better. I lost two hours I'll never get back. I was so hoping it would be great. It wasn't even close.

I'm sorry to hear about animated Firefly. I thought it would be the regular show. I'm very disappointed.
shadowkat: (Default)

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-22 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand how it got a second season and how folks are watching Scarpetta? I found it headache inducing? Interesting to hear it got worse instead of better, I couldn't get past the first episode.

Firefly can only really continue as animated, unfortunately, since Ron Glass (Shepard) passed away, and the actors have aged - and they want to do the period between the 14th or 13th episode and the film Serenity. Also it's easier and cheaper to do animated. You can hire a handful of actors to play multiple roles. Alan Tyduk (WASH) could probably play WASH and half of the non-main cast roles all by himself.

Yes, your bringing up Tudyk, he continues to be in demand (and Fillion is still leading a show). Doing voiceover is easier to squeeze in alongside other jobs.

Re: the second season for Scarpetta, my guess is that it was contracted for from the start, probably in order to ensure getting big names like Curtis and Kidman.
shadowkat: (Default)

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-22 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It may have been - but they are advertising it as based on the number of viewers S! got. (I was following Curtis for a bit on Instagram and FB and she was advertising the heck out of it and S2 pickup. I finally stopped following her - she was driving me nuts.)

I think most of the cast of Firefly is busy - and voice work allows for it to work, and they have to be between S1 and Serenity - for Wash to be in it, since ahem, he can't be in it after Serenity - well, he could...but...

Yeah, it was poorly executed. For once I agree with the NY Times and the Guardian, although they were able to watch more of it than I was? I couldn't get past the first episode. How folks are watching it is beyond me. It even got renewed for a 2nd Season.

Argh, I wrote tons here and lost it. :-( This is going to be the short version.

Episode 1 of The Madison, which is beautiful to look at, and we plan to watch more, but my partner suspects it will turn out to be quite conservative. We'll see. (CW: partner loss and grief.)

Started a rewatch of Paper Girls, about four young teen girls who get mixed up in a time war. Still so sad it got cancelled.

Finished Ponies, which was great, sometimes brutal, sometimes funny, and ended on a cliffhanger. Emilia Clarke is awesome!

The Naked Gun with Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Appropriately silly.

1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed -- a doco of interviews with mixed-race kids in the Bay Area.

The first few episodes of Rooster, which exceeded my expectations. Quirky and enjoyable.

More of The Pitt. (I found the latest episode so upsetting. It's so good.)

Some stand-up comedy: Marc Maron, Rose Matafeo, probably some others.

And in Kdramas, I'm still going with Undercover Miss Hong, One Spring Night, and Love Scout. :D

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Madison has a good cast - but it is in the Yellowstone universe and ....from Taylor Sheridan. Also on Paramount (which I'm still boycotting because of Skydance media - who so far is just making the news conservative, nothing else - they've also bought HBO, which makes me worry about the Pitt. But again so far they are hands off fictional content.)

Agree on the Pitt.

Speaking of K dramas? Have you seen something called "Chasing Jade"? It's been rec'd at my workplace, and on social media by various urban fantasy writers.

I don't know who Taylor Sheridan is, but yeah, all those Yellowstone universe shows seem pretty right-leaning. Idk. (Here it's on a local streaming service that includes a lot of HBO shows.)

But again so far they are hands off fictional content.

That's good to know, at least.

Speaking of K dramas? Have you seen something called "Chasing Jade"?

Ooh, no, I haven't. *pokes around the internet* Oh, it's actually a Chinese drama. Looks fun, but I mostly only watch Kdramas, in a vain attempt to keep the last remaining shreds of my Korean language learning alive. ;-)

[personal profile] shadowkat 2026-03-23 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Taylor Sheridan is the show-runner or the creator of the series "The Madison". He created Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingsbridge (I think that's what it is called), 1883, 1923, and now the Madison. He's not exactly right-wing, and neither was Yellowstone - I saw Yellowstone, so much as "libertarian" - which isn't quite the same thing? He's a horse rancher who is from Texas - and the Western US has a lot of folks who don't want Big Government, no regs, and to be left alone with their ranches.

I doubt he likes the current regime, but it's unclear. Yellowstone is kind of a dark anti-hero show, you're not really supposed to like the main characters in it.

With a basketball tournament overtaking the tv schedule, my family hasn't been watching a lot. We were expecting our usual 'Tracker' and 'Watson' tonight, but they were delayed by 45 minutes. And then the weather turned severe enough that we were just watching the meteorologist after about 15 minutes. My sibling was looking forward to 'The Forsytes' and (I think) 'The Count of Monte Cristo' that were both supposed to air tonight, but we'll have to wait and see if any weather announcements interfered with those. (The last time that happened on PBS, it was a verbal announcement of the scrolling banner and turning on the subtitles was all that was needed.)

I suspect there will be a lot of this over the next few months. We are getting such yo-yo weather here, and with that comes a higher incidence of tornadoes. We already got lucky with one cell just last week.

We have only streaming though, so on the plus side we could get PBS shows uninterrupted (and ahead of time). On the downside we have no local news, but we do have a good NPR station with a meteorologist that comes on with reports when there are tornado threats.
