Hello television viewers

Hello! I don't know if it was because DW/LJ was slowing down or if it was the changing television habits, but somehow we drifted away from talking about TV shows in this space.
I'm still here. I still like TV. And I'd still like to talk about shows I'm watching. Based on the increased activity I'm seeing on DW, I don't think I'm alone. (or maybe I am - LOL)
Anyway, I think we should resuscitate this community and start talking. What do you think?
Would anyone out there be willing to help me out with three things? (feel free to browse older entries for ideas)
1) If you where building DW television discussion community, what elements would you include?
2) What sort of posts/activities would inspire you to participate?
3) Do you have any suggestions or ideas for structure or format?
FYI - I want this community to be open forum - meaning just because we develop some structure or have scheduled posts, people are always welcome to come post about any TV show at any time.

And... just so this post isn't all boring business, we should maybe socialize as well, and get this thing started out right. :D

What TV have you been watching?
Right now I'm following The 100, Once Upon A Time, and Shadowhunters.
What genre(s) of TV do you like best?
Mystery, historical, and fantasy.

I do think we should keep to cuts and spoiler tags though - because I honestly know so few people who don't DVR or amazon pass or whatever for TV these days. Also, it keeps big posts (like the one I just made - oops) from flooding reading lists.
I watched the first few episodes of The 100 and enjoyed it, I have no clue what's going on with it these days. Are you current?
Two shows that have come up lately that seem interesting are Shadowhunters and Wynona Earp. What is it that draws you to Shadowhunters?

What TV have you been watching? Just watched the first episode of Class; am in the midst of Black Sails S3; recently watched Legion; am up to date with Agents of SHIELD; am behind on Brooklyn 99 and The Expanse; lots of odds and ends shows in various states of current viewing.
What genre(s) of TV do you like best? Apparently genre matters less than style and substance.

On the one hand, I think that a general TV community is a good idea since community activity remains sparse on DW despite the influx of people. However, there is SO MUCH television, current and past, that people are watching that I think it will be difficult to talk about any specific shows in a single community. What I think would be immensely helpful though were if tv_talk served as a roundup community pointing people to where conversation was going on about TV shows (any shows). That way as people joined in at DW, they would have a guide to conversations around the site and also a way to find fellow fans who were actually discussing given shows rather than simply listing them in their interests when they may never have posted about them (or only did so years ago).

I do think that talking about specific shows will be difficult because there's just SO MUCH... as you say. :) I like the round-up idea, both of other communities and unlocked journals and invite people to say things like "I'm watching X and post about it regularly, add me if interested in X"

What TV have you been watching?
Too much! Doctor Who, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Grimm (sadly over), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (don't judge!), and way, way, way behind on Supernatural. I think I'm missing a few things.
What genre(s) of TV do you like best?
Sci-fi, drama

I was just talking about Grimm with someone on my flist the other day, they've recently gotten sucked in. I watched up to season 3 and only left off because it went on hiatus and I didn't pick it back up when it returned.
I have an urge to go see if I can find SPN/Grimm crossover MOTW fic now.

What TV have you been watching? Sherlock (s4 and re-watch of the previous ones), showed a friend about ten episodes of Jane the Virgin recently, and started a re-watch of NCIS:LA yesterday, because I finally have s7 on DVD and tend to start from the beginning to get in the mood properly. If I actually go through with this, I'll be busy for the next few weeks. *g*
What genre(s) of TV do you like best? science fiction, fantasy, historical dramas, sometimes weird artsy stuff about real people
I'm always late to the party, always catching up on something. Even if I have all the resources to get to the new stuff, I don't have the time or I'm not in the mood.

NCIS:LA was such a fun show, I liked what I've seen of it. Enjoy the rewatch!

What TV have you been watching? I'm in full X-Files phase and recently finished Shadowhunters, I should get caught up on Magicians and How To Get Away With Murder, I'm thinking of getting back into Doctor Who, have a love-hate relationship with Game of Thrones, I ration Sex and The city because it's the TV equivalent of comfort food for me... I often forget about what I actually watch, because it's a lot, and I also have a terrible memory for new season air dates
What genre(s) of TV do you like best? I suppose anything with supernatural elements, but it's not such a necessary requirement. If something is moderately well-made and with interesting characters/fandoms I'll watch, if it's a campy-terrible show it means it appeals to my ID and that means homoeroticism and magic.
no subject
I know several people who are watching The Magicians and they seem to thoroughly enjoy it.
haha - campy-terrible shows that appeal to ID can be the most fun. :)

What TV have you been watching? I watch loads of things, way too much. Recently I've just binged both seasons of the Magicians and liked it more than I thought I would. I still love Scandal even though it's awful now. Similarly, Supernatural, although I'm a few eps behind on that. I really liked the first season of the new MacGyver, stop judging me it's the slashiest thing I've seen on tv for ages. Wentworth is probably my favourite thing on tv at the moment.
What genre(s) of TV do you like best? Probably still sci fi, but there isn't any sci fi I like at the moment so maybe not sci fi. I don't know. Slashy tv is probably truly my favourite tv. And I'm not feeling any of it at the moment.
1) If you where building DW television discussion community, what elements would you include?
One thing I think might work well here, is if someone went through the members posts once a week, (or perhaps further afield than that) and pulled out links to any posts about tv shows old or new. Particularly I'm interested in happy squeeful posts which often don't get linked around as much as deep thoughtful meaningful things. So I'd link to things no matter how small or big. I think dw is quiet enough and flocked enough that it wouldn't actually take all that long to put together, and there might only be a dozen or so links a week. But it would help people find each other, and people would be able to see what people are posting about and find new shows that way, and mostly it would just create regular updates for the community. I'd be happy to help with it if you think it would work.
I saw a couple of people had said they'd like posts up for episode discussion every week for shows. To be honest I find that hard on my flist when there might be several different shows airing that I'm not interested in a bit. But if they were tagged so I could mute the tags for them, that would be good.
I think there used to be a post every month here about new shows starting or old ones returning and I really liked that. I wouldn't want it to be the main focus of the comm, but it's nice when people in comments can chat about what they're looking forward to and what they're not. The TV calendar has a section that lists the same thing, I don't know how comprehensive it is, but I'm sure there are other places doing the same, so it wouldn't be too hard to pull together.
no subject
I like the idea of a round up sort of thing that both you and
Some sort of TV calendar wouldn't be too hard. Something like it could be done quarterly or monthly. I like that idea, too!
I think your comment about episode discussions each week is why this comm reverted to having 'HOMEBASE' posts with episode threads opened up each week. People who were into the show could subscribe to the post and get notification when a new thread went up. Like you say, people can also mute tags. I'm not sure which would be easier - I may put up a poll to see what the general consensus is on that. I'm sure a lot of it will depend on the number of active members we have.

2) See above. lol Oh and maybe TV showcases, y'know, stuff where people introduce a show they're currently watching or one they only recently discovered and are now obsessed with or something.
3) I think as much freedom as possible is good in this case. Allow for people to post whatever they'd like as long as it's TV related. But, of course, not TOO off-topic either.

I like the showcase idea. I was toying with inviting people to do a primer or recruitment sort of thing, where they post about their show and encourage others to give it a go.
Re: tumblr link - that was cute! At first the bird is all... "STOP! DO NOT PASS" and then they're just tooling around inside because why not. Maybe I'm easily amused as well.

What TV have you been watching? I've been rewatching Buffy with my housemate, we're in the middle of season 3 now. Otherwise I'm behind on Doctor Who (my dvr wasn't set to record it, and i just put off finding another way to watch it), Designated Survivor, Supergirl, Madam Secretary and Grey's Anatomy. I watch Scandal and Saving Hope as they air in Belgium, so no idea how far behind I am. Also, I have a weekly date with my little sister to watch Pretty Little Liars as it (finally) ends. I'm hoping to finish Wynnona Earp's first season at some point in the future, and I really want to continue watching The West Wing.
What genre(s) of TV do you like best? I love scifi and fantasy a lot but I also like drama that I get overly invested in and makes me cry. I like cop shows and hospital shows. I'll give a lot of things a chance, not everything I watch is premium quality but I find it hard to give up on shows.

Link something cool you've seen on tumblr/dw/lj lately! This is the post that made me start watching Wynonna Earp: A “Wynonna Earp” Netflix Binge Is The Gay Light You Need In This Cold, Dark World
Late to the party as ever (I don't have a lot of time to be online these days, sadly).
I really like the idea of a freer approach to content and posting, but what I particularly like is some kind of newsletter type post that might also collect links to other DW journals (perhaps as opt-in, perhaps with a clear distinction between "someone posted about X" and "someone is hosting a discussion about X"?)
I also really liked the idea of some kind of "driver" who could host a discussion of a specific show - the problem is that almost no one is watching in syndication anymore (I certainly am not), but it would be nice to generate talk by setting a schedule and watching something together. I don't know if the place is big enough for that to be feasible, though.
no subject
I think you've touched on some of the very topics we've been debating - particularly about watching habits and how do we all do something at the same time. I think some sort of round-up or newsletter type thing is a great way to start off as well as posts like this one where people are invited to talk about stuff they're watching.
As for launching a watch-along, I adore that type of activity and I sense many polls in our future. :)
