TV Tuesday: TV for Sloths or Rabbits

Vince Gilligan was recently quoted as saying “[Slow storytelling] is a plus in a world of very fast-paced editing and TikTok videos that are only a minute long. If the whole world were to move at that pace...that would be very sad to me. I think there is a certain percentage of the viewership… is ready for a slower pace. It’s fast food versus home cooking.”

Have you found that the pace of TV storytelling has increased? Have you seen patterns in different time periods? And how slow is slow enough for your viewing taste?

SF, fantasy and horror TV premiering in April

Here Are All the Genre TV Premieres Airing in April!

(Probably should add the caveat that this will be largely US-based so might not be ALL the shows...)

TV Tuesday: Where's That Going?

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

Within 24 hours there were two stories in the news about Netflix:

Kpop Demon Hunters directors and writers will be paid “about $50 million between them over five years, and grant them shares of merchandising and music revenue”

Netflix, for the second time in a little over a year, is raising prices for its three plans in the U.S

Being a worldwide company, one show, however expensive, is only part of a financial deficit. But amidst an industry which is shedding workers across the board, are large paydays for hits part of it? Or is the very large pool of shows itself part of the problem, making the few standouts more valuable?

In an interview, Seth MacFarlane said that he created The Orville because “the dishes that we are serving up are so dystopian and so pessimistic.”

Do we need hopeful television? Can dystopian television be hopeful? Which shows are hopeful to you?

TV Tuesday: Meta and Ranking

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

The opening of [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge coincided with a post lamenting how critical examinations of canon content are increasingly challenged as the wrong way to do fandom. Meanwhile other groups engage in ranking wars, artificially raising or lowering general audience feedback to shows or music.

Do you enjoy getting into the weeds with your TV viewing? Do you find viewer rankings of shows to be helpful? Or do you find thinking too much about what you watch ruins your fun?
