Did you think it was filler? I thought it was one of the most beautiful episodes of television I'd ever seen! It was a poem, using visuals as recurring, rhyming couplets and strongly evoking emotion and memory.
At first I thought it was weird, with the rhythm of the time jumping and repetition, and obviously it didn't advance the plot much, but I did feel that it beautifully addressed one of the core issues at the heart of the show: the relationship between 'Hood' and 'Carrie.' They will always be moving away from their lost dream; it will never be theirs again, and like a unicorn, a rare and mythical creature, their childhood, starcrossed love will never be recaptured.
I palpably felt them giving up, shifting gears, shifting their perspectives in this episode. It was all on the inside, though, which is why I was so impressed with how they visually represented it. (because I'm rather dense about the finer points of feelings, and the fact that I *got* them in this ep is like, no short of a miracle lol)
All of the imagined reactions that are intercut with what actually happens was gorgeous too. This is all strongly centered in "Hood's" pov, and the fact that we continually shifted from fantasy to reality and back, cycling through could-have-beens and wishful thinking, marked only slightly by the change in lighting, made it seem like more critical action was happening, because we are always off kilter, never sure what's really going on. And the framing shots--the overhead crawling through the corn--and color palette all really strongly evoked a sense of dream/memory/artifice, even in the parts where action *is* happening, making this sort of effortless blend of all three--and I really got a sense of being inside 'Hood's" mind and got a sense of how he sees the world. Which goes a long way to explaining his justification for how he behaves, along with the mythos he's built up of his time with Anna.
Also, I loved the fact that we've been following this FBI guy all along, and assuming his arc would be heroic, that he'd end up getting Rabbit, by virtue of the fact that he's dying, but practically as he's proclaiming his grand plan, he's cut short; more fodder for our fear of Rabbit, and reinforcing the sense that nothing is fair, or safe, or just in this universe.
lol uh, I guess I could go on for a while on this show. I'm glad there's someone else out there watching! It's not the usual fannish sort of thing. But it's amazing, isn't it?

That's a lovely way to put it - and you are right, the ep did do those things, and did them well. However, it was such a radical departure from the series' usual tone and pace that it felt totally off to me. A sudden near-total deceleration and shift into inner space and poetic symbolism was not what I expected from Banshee, and to me it's such a radical departure that the ep feels like a foreign body in the context of the rest of the series.
I do think that the emotional state of the characters was very clearly shown, including the turning point (or crisis) that they are both facing. However, I felt this was basically an extended re-iteration of things that had already been clear before. I don't see the need for this ep in narrative terms.
Perhaps the series intends to take not!Hood and Anastasia in new and different directions in terms of goals, dreams and hopes, and that was why they felt they needed such a clear watershed? If so, it would make somewhat more sense to me... but to be honest, that's not the impression I got. Even now, I would still be surprised to find not!Hood letting go of the desperate dream of Anastasia that he clutched so desperately to carry him through 15 years of hell.
(I *would* actually welcome this change on not!Hood's part, although I still think it's not likely to happen. For one thing, it would mean a badly needed measure of healing and moving on for him, and for another, I feel that he and Anastasia are not good for each other in the present day. Plus I am getting rather tired of that plot. *g*)
I do agree on the FBI agent - that was a very nice and utterly surprising twist. I'm sorry to see him go, though; I liked him.
Banshee is indeed a very interesting series! I enjoy many aspects of it, although there are also aspects that make me grit my teeth and/or roll my eyes (and hit the fast-forward button *g*). And I must say that I am incredibly impressed by the main actors, especially not!Hood.
