I'm trying not to get too excited about it or look at too much stuff online so as to not psych myself out. I don't want to get my hopes up only to end up disappointed.

Please be good, show, please be good.

I have no idea what this show is. I guess it's the place to be, since this is the only show post that has gotten much attention/activity!

Yeah, I don't care, I love this show to death forever. DORIAN. KENNEX. SANDRA. ROBOOOOOOOOOOOOTS. Mackenzie Crook is my favorite, this show was MADE for me, no lie. Also, the first story I read on the AO3 was porn and it was actually really good. What the hell.

Pretty much I already covered what I thought of this ep elsewhere, but for posterity, I want to go on the record saying: This show surprised me. Michael Ealy is amazing and I am really really glad to see Lily Taylor on my television.

Ok so a lot of hilarious stuff happened in this episode (I cracked up during the anger management meeting at the beginning) and a lot of YAY THEY ARE SUCH BROS stuff happened between Dorian and John.

BUT I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT THIS:

Anyone who watched Fringe will remember that in the Altverse, pens were considered antiquated because everyone just used computers/tablets/etc and nobody ever actually wrote with pens anymore. And I just chuckled over the fact that in the Almost Human universe it is the same way and my fanon brain has decided this means that Almost Human takes place in the Fringe Altverse WHO'S WITH ME

Wow! wow wow wow. Lots of stuff in this one. First of all, is this the first mention we've had of 'beyond the wall'? Are we expanding the universe? Is the wall like, the Berlin Wall? And what's on the other side of it? Complete and utter lawlessness? What city is this supposed to be? They mentioned Japan, so it's not as if this world is all just one great big city.

And then all the fate vs free will stuff! I loved how the synthetic soul vials are these tiny things. They remind me of the pineal gland, which was long said to be the seat of consciousness. Very cool. And while I kinda saw the Nigel-as-orchestrator of the whole thing from the jump, it was still really cool to see Dorian meet 'his maker.'

I feel like sooner or later, all shows dealing with AI have to confront the makers. It reminded me a lot of the ep of Star Trek: TNG, where Data met his maker. AIs are children, and they're our hope for something greater, and our mad scientist dream of becoming God.

The thing I liked about Danica having the same 'synthetic soul' as Dorian, is that it really illustrates the notion of free will, not to mention nature vs. nurture. I wonder if Danica actually had less free will, or if Nigel talked her into sacrificing herself for the cause?

And then--was that Danica's original model, getting into the cab with her daughter? Sometimes I have a hard time telling white women apart. Did they just look really similar? And what were the parameters of her mission, that she hesitates to kill those two, and she hesitates to kill Kennex, but there's so much wanton murdering of other people?

All in all, I liked this ep. Lots of chew on. I'm glad the show is back!

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this ep. On the one hand, I liked that it introduced yet another variant of the artificial - natural dichotomy. On the other hand, I wish the series would give some more time and attention to the dichotomy it already has between Dorian and Kennex as representatives of their respective kinds: an emotionally competent android and an emotionally stunted natural human.

I feel as though Almost Human introduces a great number of fascinating philosophical and ethical questions, and then never really follows up.

All that aside, I did think this was a visually beautiful ep, with an absolutely gorgeous and intriguing intro. I also liked the reveal of Detective Stahl as genetically modified; it adds some interest to her character with the question of why she chose a job that is seen to be beneath her by other genetically modified people.

Plus, I am very glad the plot with John's terrorist ex-girlfriend is moving forward again, because it's a very vital part of who John is right now and what drives him. It's good to get a look both at some of his demons, and at the background of the entire affair. That she was using him from the start and approached him only in order to use him was a chilling detail, I felt.

- If you're in the USA, you can watch on www.fox.com although I don't think all the episodes are up - just the last few. Usually the available episodes on hulu.com are the same as the network site (unless you have plus or something?)
- You can purchase episodes via iTunes or Amazon.com
- There are also tv sharing communities on LJ/DW and various other streaming sites.
