Re: Fanworks Link Thread:
I completely forgot to post this when we were watching Serenity pt. 1&2, but I thought it somewhat appropriate to a re-watch. I made this a couple years ago at a land comm for a challenge called 'One Episode To Rule Them All' in which you had to make a vid based on a single Whedon episode. NO SPOILERS beyond the first episode.
Ordinary Day
I sometimes think of making another Firefly vid, but when I do I go watch Come On or New Frontier and the feeling passes because OMG. so good. Both contain spoilers for everything.

Re: Episode 1x01: Serenity Discussion Thread
There is this feeling of deep sadness I get from this episode. But some of that comes from remembering how the show was canceled before it was able to reach it's full potential. But also it isn't exactly a happy episode. There are happy parts, and there are so many good lines. I forgot how good the dialogue is in this show. Not just the funny bits either, all of it.
One thing I noticed that I didn't remember noticing before is in the opening scene where Mal and Zoe are in battle, Mal kisses a cross that he's wearing. Before it all goes bad, he kisses a cross. I either didn't notice it before or didn't connect it with his dislike of Shepard Book later in the episode.
I love the characters so much. I love the scene where Wash is playing with the toy dinosaurs. Also the scene where Mal tells Simon that Kaylee's dead and then he's laughing about it with the others later, that was kind of awesome too.
Though I think the bit where Mal comes on this ship after dealing with Patience and finds the Alliance guy holding River at gunpoint and he just walks in and shoots him and keeps walking...that scene is really one of my favorites.
One of my favorite lines is when Jayne says "Pain is scary" when Mal tells him to just scare the Alliance guy.

Most other shows lack strong pilot episodes like this, IMO and that's just the first 5-10 minutes.
Also, I watched the special features on the blu-ray (something I haven't done in....uh.. ever?) It was pre-Serenity (movie) and made me nostalgic.

One thing that struck me was: the costumes seem to hold up SO much better than some other sci-fi shows. You know? Like, looking at the ~aliens in Farscape or SGA, it feels somehow like the costumes of the future still look more 'believable' in some way? idk
still find it amazing that Fox didn't want to show this one first. I really can't remember a show that introduces its characters in a more organic way. Most pilots are clunky and terrible, but this one is nearly flawless.
Re: Episode 1x01: Serenity Discussion Thread
Re: Episode 1x01: Serenity Discussion Thread
Favorite scenes is TOUGH, though. I love so many moments from the pilot. I'll go with my shipper bias and say I adore the Zoe/Wash bits in this episode. From their little conversation in the beginning and how it's filmed from a distance so you can only make out their silhouettes to that FANTASTIC bit at the end.
"Sir, I'd like you to take the helm, please. I need this man to tear all my clothes off." *grabs Wash* "Work, work, work." *Wash happily gets dragged away* :D
But I also LOVE Simon's monologue about River inter-cut with the Simon+River scenes and that great Mal+Kaylee scene after she gets shot. And the entire ending, starting with the Zoe/Wash moment I mentioned above. And the entire opening, through them bringing the cargo on board. SO...basically I love EVERY scene :D
Favorite lines:
the Zoe/Wash exchange above
Wash's ENTIRE 'this land' speech
"We've done the impossible and that makes us mighty."
"I love my Captain."
"If anyone gets nosy, you know, just shoot 'em." "Shoot 'em?" "Politely."
"Testing, Captain can you hear me?" "I'm standing right here." "You're coming through good and loud." "Cause I'm standing right here."
Favorite Characters:
I don't know if you mean from the series, in general, or just from the pilot but it doesn't really change so...
Zoe, Inara, Wash, Simon, Kaylee, River, Mal, Book, Jayne - in that order but I love all 9 main characters. LOVE them. And I almost never LOVE every single main character, but I do with this show.
Re: Episode 1x01: Serenity Discussion Thread
This is an exemplary pilot and a wonderfully deft introduction to the entire cast except for two things:
1. The shakycam makes me ill so I miss quite a bit of the battle scenes (which I'm used to!) but also there's weird jumps for no reason through the show which was disorienting.
2. Inara's role as a Companion is poorly developed here: I know that it's meant to be canon that Companions are highly respected, highly educated and it's Mal being rude and stupid about the sexual parts of her job, but in this episode we first see her having sex and then the young officer trying to "take her away from all this" and then be blatantly rude to her, then Book being taken aback by her profession. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me if the general attitude is meant to be one of respect, as with geisha, the comparison that Joss Whedon often made.

Episode 1x02: The Train Job
This episode was originally aired September 20, 2002
*remember to put "spoilers" in your comment subject if you are going to be referencing any episodes that come after this one :)
Re: Episode 1x02: The Train Job
We also learn that Inara's been on the ship for about 8 months at this point. Which really isn't that long.
I love the scene where Inara goes and "rescues" Zoe and Mal. And I love that we see that Mal has a lot of integrity for a thief. He returns the medicine even though it means crossing a man that probably shouldn't be crossed.
I loved Simon doping Jayne too, that was a great scene.
I also really liked the scene towards the end where Mal is trying to give back Niska's money to his men and the one refuses and Mal kicks him into the ship's…something thingy? And I love the second guy who just agrees and doesn't need a speech at all. That was cute.
We also get the whole "Two by Two, Hands of Blue" Thing going on with River.
I believe this was the episode that actually aired first and I do remember being really confused about what was going on with River. I remember being confused about a lot of it but still enjoying it.

Episode 1x03: Bushwacked
Originally aired: September 27, 2002
*remember to put "spoilers" in your comment subject if you are going to be referencing any episodes that come after this one :)
Re: Episode 1x03: Bushwacked
I love the whole thing with Wash and "who's flying this thing?"
The spooky ship and then what the Reavers left being was all creepy. I wonder why none of them noticed the smell though. That sort of thing with the bodies should smell, right?
I like how Jayne acts all tough about everything except Reavers for the most part. I also like this line of his "looked bigger when I couldn't see him."
Kaylee was great with her mechanical awesomeness! Love this line: "Besides, if I mess up it's not like you'll be able to yell at me."
They end up getting boarded by the alliance and I loved the interviews. They gave us deeper insight into all of the characters. I loved how closed mouthed Zoe was about her marriage and said they were private people while Wash couldn't shut about about how awesome and hot his wife is (and who could blame him really?)
I liked how much joy was on River's face while she was outside the ship hiding with Simon and how much he was afraid and how much she just seemed to love it.
Then the "survivor" of the Reavers turns Reaver and we get more insight into that whole thing.
I really like this episode and how much more we start to understand the characters.

Episode 1x04: "Shindig" Discussion Thread:
Original Airdate: November 1, 2002
How did you all like the episode?
Re: Episode 1x04: "Shindig" Discussion Thread:
Then we’re back to Persephone and we get to see Badger again, which is fun. Especially the scene with him in River towards the end, that was pretty awesome.
We learn more about the whole companion thing too.
We see Mal’s jealousy get himself into trouble. Kaylee in a frilly dress! The other women are horribly mean but she wins over the men with her knowledge of ships. Which was really cool to see.
“Yes sir, captain tight pants.”
Zoe and Wash have couple time. Which is cute and sweet.
Inara and Mal dance. Atherton is an ass.
Simon, Jayne and the Shepard gambling for chores. River having one of her episodes and Jayne using the opportunity to cheat.
The cargo is cattle, which I think is awesome because it doesn't seem like something that should have to be smuggled and it really lends itself to the whole "space western" feel too :)

Episode 1x05: "Safe"
This episode originally aired November 8, 2002.
Re: Episode 1x05: "Safe"
I really liked the way the cut back and forth between River dancing and the gunfight with everyone else.
I love how Jayne was going through Simon's stuff and then when they went back for them he had to bring everything back in a hurry.
I liked getting more background on River and Simon as well. And when they came back for River and Simon it was pretty awesome too. "Big damn heroes, sir". Loved that.
The thing with Book and his ident card getting him top notch medical treatment by the alliance was interesting as well.
Overall a fun episode, I thought. Kind of sad but interesting. Another one they showed out of order when originally aired though. I have no idea why they did that.

Episode 1x06: Our Mrs. Reynolds
Thoughts? Feelings? Favorite things etc?
Re: Episode 1x06: Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jayne wanting to trade his gun Vera for Saffron was awesome. Given that she was playing them all and willing to leave them all for dead, maybe Mal should have made that trade after all. Especially with Jayne's "That's why I never kiss em on the mouth".
I loved Mal thinking that Inara kissed Saffron, never realizing that it was him that she kissed when she was so relieved that he wasn't dead.
Favorite lines:
"Don't feel bad he makes everybody cry" -Kaylee about Mal
"The special hell" -Book
"To wubba who?" -Mal when finding out about "his wife".
"Some people juggle geese" -Wash
and I can't forget "Hello...woman person" -Mal to Saffron, because my husband calls me "woman person" all the time because of this show ;)
Re: Episode 1x06: Our Mrs. Reynolds
Episode 1x07: Jaynestown
Thoughts? Feelings? Favorite things etc?
Re: Episode 1x07: Jaynestown
Evidence that Jayne is very much not a loyal man. River and Book with the bible and his hair!!!
The idea (and some talk) about symbols and faith and needing something to believe in, even when it doesn't make sense. Both with Book and his religion and the mudders and Jayne.
Favorite lines: "Have good sex" -Kaylee
"No, this must be what going mad feels like" -Simon
"We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero" -Wash
A very fun episode though it does end on a note of sadness with that mudder giving his life for Jayne and Jayne being so confused by it.
Episode 1x08: Out of Gas
episode originally aired: 10/25/02
Re: Episode 1x08: Out of Gas
I liked the non-linear story telling as well. Everyone felt like family, that dinner before everything went to hell was sweet and family like. Then Mal staying behind with the ship. It was a really great, emotional episode.
Favorite lines:
"you paid money for this, sir? On purpose?" -Zoe
"We'll freeze to death first" -River being oh so helpful and reassuring.
Re: Episode 1x08: Out of Gas
Episode 1x09: "Ariel"
Originally aired November 15, 2002
Thoughts, feelings, whatnot???
Re: Episode 1x09: "Ariel"
"he looks better in red"
Simon hired them for the job…break into an alliance hospital.
Simon's a great doctor.
Jayne amazed at seeing how awesome he is.
But of course Jayne had ratted them out.
I love that end scene between him and Malcolm.
So sad.
I also loved Mal calling Simon and River part of his team, his crew :)
1x10: "War Stories"
Thoughts, feelings, etc….
Re: 1x10: "War Stories"
Tension between Zoe and Wash about Malcolm being a bit too much in their marriage.
Wash and Mal doing the job together because of this.
"I'll be in my bunk" -Jayne :)
Nishka finally catches up with them.
Mal and Wash fight and bond while being tortured!
Book is a bad ass with a gun!
The River closes her eyes and shoots three men with perfection.
Sadly this creeps out Kaylee :(
I also love the whole bit where Zoe and Mal make like they have to do it to break the "sexual tension" because of what Wash said during the torture ;) That was awesome!
Episode: 1x11: "Trash"
Any favorite bits? Favorite lines?
Re: Episode: 1x11: "Trash"
Saffron is back!
Inara is awesome :)
River knows, and Simon finds out that Jayne had sold them out on Ariel.
Simon was pretty awesome and River…
"Also…I can kill you with my brain"
perfect :)
Episode: 1x12: "The Message"
Re: Episode: 1x12: "The Message"
And of course the actor (Jonathan M. Ward) who played Tracey has also been in Angel and BtVS!
"Spry for a dead fella" -Jayne (and he doesn't even bother to get up and help)
This is a pretty depressing episode :(
Episode: 1x13: "Heart of Gold"
Re: Episode: 1x13: "Heart of Gold"
"They got boy whores, isn't that thoughtful" -Kaylee
and this…
I actually love this episode, even thought it is also really sad too.
Episode: 1x14: "Objects in Space"
What did you think?
Any favorite bits? Favorite lines?
Re: Episode: 1x14: "Objects in Space"
Obviously they're not quite at the corner of No and Where, but it sure sucks to have to coach people to remove bullets from your own body.
