I guess I'll kick off the fanworks links. Here are two Firefly vids I've made over the years. Both vids contain SPOILERS for the ENTIRE series, as well as the MOVIE. So, be warned if you haven't watched the show/the movie.

Like [personal profile] mfirefly10, most of my Firefly fanworks are vid-related. I've made seven Firefly vids with varying degrees of success.

I completely forgot to post this when we were watching Serenity pt. 1&2, but I thought it somewhat appropriate to a re-watch. I made this a couple years ago at a land comm for a challenge called 'One Episode To Rule Them All' in which you had to make a vid based on a single Whedon episode. NO SPOILERS beyond the first episode.
Ordinary Day

I sometimes think of making another Firefly vid, but when I do I go watch Come On or New Frontier and the feeling passes because OMG. so good. Both contain spoilers for everything.

The opening scene with the battle of Serenity was more powerful than it had a right to be. Transitioning that to the thieving and Wash and Kaylee being adorable and the tension of almost getting caught.... A++++

Most other shows lack strong pilot episodes like this, IMO and that's just the first 5-10 minutes.

Also, I watched the special features on the blu-ray (something I haven't done in....uh.. ever?) It was pre-Serenity (movie) and made me nostalgic.

I don't know why they didn't just keep the food bars, though--it would have been more convenient to have the money, but knowing that they wouldn't run out of food for years would have been reassuring.

SIGH I don't know WHY I thought I could watch one episode of this show and stop lol. I ended up watching four? five? last night. And got like four hours of sleep. Even though I've seen this show literally countless times.

One thing that struck me was: the costumes seem to hold up SO much better than some other sci-fi shows. You know? Like, looking at the ~aliens in Farscape or SGA, it feels somehow like the costumes of the future still look more 'believable' in some way? idk

still find it amazing that Fox didn't want to show this one first. I really can't remember a show that introduces its characters in a more organic way. Most pilots are clunky and terrible, but this one is nearly flawless.

As everyone else has said, it makes no sense to me why FOX didn't show this first. It's without a doubt EXACTLY what they needed to introduce the audience to this world/these characters and it's one of the best pilots I've ever seen.

Favorite scenes is TOUGH, though. I love so many moments from the pilot. I'll go with my shipper bias and say I adore the Zoe/Wash bits in this episode. From their little conversation in the beginning and how it's filmed from a distance so you can only make out their silhouettes to that FANTASTIC bit at the end.
"Sir, I'd like you to take the helm, please. I need this man to tear all my clothes off." *grabs Wash* "Work, work, work." *Wash happily gets dragged away* :D
But I also LOVE Simon's monologue about River inter-cut with the Simon+River scenes and that great Mal+Kaylee scene after she gets shot. And the entire ending, starting with the Zoe/Wash moment I mentioned above. And the entire opening, through them bringing the cargo on board. SO...basically I love EVERY scene :D

Favorite lines:
the Zoe/Wash exchange above
Wash's ENTIRE 'this land' speech
"We've done the impossible and that makes us mighty."
"I love my Captain."
"If anyone gets nosy, you know, just shoot 'em." "Shoot 'em?" "Politely."
"Testing, Captain can you hear me?" "I'm standing right here." "You're coming through good and loud." "Cause I'm standing right here."

Favorite Characters:
I don't know if you mean from the series, in general, or just from the pilot but it doesn't really change so...
Zoe, Inara, Wash, Simon, Kaylee, River, Mal, Book, Jayne - in that order but I love all 9 main characters. LOVE them. And I almost never LOVE every single main character, but I do with this show.

Because the show wasn't aired in my country, I managed to watch it all in the correct order, starting with this episode. I don't know how people knew what was going on dropped in at Episode 3!

This is an exemplary pilot and a wonderfully deft introduction to the entire cast except for two things:

1. The shakycam makes me ill so I miss quite a bit of the battle scenes (which I'm used to!) but also there's weird jumps for no reason through the show which was disorienting.

2. Inara's role as a Companion is poorly developed here: I know that it's meant to be canon that Companions are highly respected, highly educated and it's Mal being rude and stupid about the sexual parts of her job, but in this episode we first see her having sex and then the young officer trying to "take her away from all this" and then be blatantly rude to her, then Book being taken aback by her profession. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me if the general attitude is meant to be one of respect, as with geisha, the comparison that Joss Whedon often made.

I was truly surprised (and in a very pleasant way) to see what Simon looked like in his pajamas. I am a gigantic Simon stan anyway and I cannot help admiring not only his person but his devotion to River, courage, and ability to be snarky under the most adverse of circumstances.

Obviously they're not quite at the corner of No and Where, but it sure sucks to have to coach people to remove bullets from your own body.
