I watch a lot of sports, which of course are live, so that's when I see the bulk of the ads that I see. I may mute them, but that's the best I can do. And increasingly, they are ads for online betting/betting apps, and I would like to burn down that entire industry. I wish my province had never legalized that. However, the flip side of that is a series of ads from the Responsible Gaming Council on the theme of "Random is always in play" -- they are very well done and amusing. (ETA to add a link: https://www.adsoftheworld.com/campaigns/random-is-always-in-play)
Otherwise, I rarely watch a show "live" -- as in, when it actually airs. I record it, if it's on a channel I get, and watch it at a later date specifically so that I can fast forward through the ads. And even some shows that I get and record, I will still then torrent so that I can watch an ad-free version of it because even having to take a break from the show to fast-forward through 2-3 minutes' worth of ads every 10 minutes just breaks the show in terms of tension/emotion, etc.

And very true about the betting ads. I quite enjoy the Daily Show segment that does sport talk, "Sponsored by Gambling" followed by something along the lines "Gambling, you didn't like your house that much anyway."
Along those lines I saw a news story the other day discussing how visits to Las Vegas have been dropping, and they blame the fact that legalized betting is now on everyone's phone. The segment had some appalling info about how often many people bet, and that the bets are about virtually anything. Mind you, I think Vegas shot themselves in the foot. Years ago they had tried to go a family friendly route and had all sorts of theme park type experiences (I always wanted to see the Star Trek one). Then they closed most of them down because it was too successful, and visitors weren't spending that much time in the casinos, where they made most of their revenue. If they had kept it in place they could have doubled down on that now. Instead prices are now up and visitors down.
Yes, I have always recorded them as well. This year I decided to see the Emmys live rather than wait until the next day because Disney+ has no DVR option. I was doing crossword puzzles during the ad breaks or dull sections. But boy did those breaks seem constant. Not as bad as something like a drama or comedy where you're immersed and then, whoops, ad break!

I think ads per hour...are okay. Not by half hour. Per hour. If it's not a streaming service I pay for. If I pay for the streaming service, I don't want ads. Why would I want ads there?
On normal linear tv, I'm sort of okay with ads at the 45 min mark. (Exceptions apply on certain public broadcasters, which don't anyway around here.) I prefer ads that tell a story or that are enjoyable. There used to be an add for Merci chocolate that started out at like I think a minute or even 90 seconds. Now I think it's maybe 30 seconds It's annoying. Give me a story, give me hope, give me something. So, there are stupid stories, but meh.
Otoh, I don't really care about celebrities in ads. At all. I'm less likely to buy the product, actually.

There have definitely been many well done ads, though it seems to me it's a tricky balance between making an ad that's enjoyable and gets people's attention vs actually convinces you to check out the product. For example, a lot of people liked the ad series with the Clydesdale and dog, but what does that have to do with the beer?
I've also marveled at how there is so much focus on ads before and after the Super Bowl, and wonder if any other country would do this besides the U.S.

When the Superbowl airs in Canada, we don't see the infamous Superbowl ads -- we get our usual schlock of Canadian ads you'd see during any other sports broadcast. Most US network shows are bought by Canadian networks, and are simulcast here -- airing at the same day/time as they do on the US network, so again, we see only Canadian ads -- even if you opt to watch the show on the US network -- the Canadian network's feed it what you'll see.
The few times I do happen to see something that is 100% American, with the original US ads, I boggle at how prevalent ads for pharmaceutical products are. I guess in the US, they figure only old people still watch actual TV/have cable. I mean, we do get ads for pharmaceutical products in Canada, but here, you can't actually say what the drug is for, so the ads are very cryptic. Whereas in the US, I swear 2/3s of the ad are just the extremely long list of possible side effects/warnings about the drug.
(Couple of examples if curious -- Canadian ad for Ozempic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeZQHuaMdJM
Canadian ads for Viagra: https://vimeo.com/238623958)

Ads for products are annoying and when they go on about how great they are I can't help but feel like I'm being lied to. But, as I said, I may choose it over spending more money, so maybe I shouldn't complain.

By comparison, some shows feel like equal parts show and ads and I'm not there to see that.

I could watch twenty movie trailers and be happy.

For me its about two things:
The ads are annoying in various ways. For example, when I use the youtube app on my tv I get ads. But the ads start mid sentence, or when something important is happening. Its not like regular tv where there are stopping points for adverts. I'd probably be more tolerant of ads if they didn't interrupt scenes. I also find that ads are pretty much irrelevant to me. Like I almost -wish- I was getting personalised ads because at least then they would be relevant lol
And the other thing is the tech issues. I've tried to watch a few things on network tv here in Australia via their official sites and the streams are always fucked up. 90% of the time the ads don't start, the stream freezes, and you have to restart the stream. But then you have to sit through another set of ads before it starts. Also, if you want to rewind 20 seconds to catch something you missed, then you're forced to watch more ads.
Its so frustrating, I would rather just give them some money so I can watch something without issues or interruptions.
In terms of product placement, that really does depend on how its done for me. Amazon has been doing some pretty obvious product placement lately in some shows/movies. On Reasonable Doubt the other day, Jax came out of the bathroom and said something like "I really need to order some more X, I'll just check on amazon *taps screen* there, ordered. so easy and free shipping too" or something similar and it was obviously an advert. That threw me out of the scene. But if the "advert" had just been saying "oh hey I just ordered some more X off amazon" as she walked out of the bathroom, and then there was a scene later with her getting home from work and picking up the package off her front door step, that would have spoken for itself. Show don't tell.

Holiday sales now! ;)
But no, I agree. It's especially annoying when I'm listening as opposed to watching (which is often, videos ironically improve my focus), and the ad correlates with whatever I'm watching well, so it takes a minute for me to realize it's an ad and not a clip.
. Also, if you want to rewind 20 seconds to catch something you missed, then you're forced to watch more ads.
I really hate that.

Great example about product placement. It's perfectly common to refer to brand name items and stores in everyday conversation. You can do it and even show the product without making it so obvious.
Ironically the worst offender to me about ads is PBS! Here in the U.S. our public broadcasting generally runs some sponsor notice at the start of a show and also shouts out foundations that have contributed for that program. When we'd record those I'd just forward through the notices, as well as the celeb intros to shows that were part of Masterpiece or Mystery. However their streaming service runs the sponsor ads every time you start watching something. So if I see an episode of, say, Call the Midwife across 3 sittings (which is common, as we often watch it during a meal) I have to sit through the ads 3 times! And if I then switch to a different show, same thing, because each carries its own sponsors.

The question about personalized ads made me laugh because occasionally I keep getting ads in Spanish, a language I do not speak more than a few words of. I don't know why this keeps happening đŸ˜‚ (especially because if I'm watching anything in a language other than English, it's almost always Japanese)
A funny instance of product placement I always think about was from the anime Code Geass, which aired sometime around 2006-ish (I don't remember exactly). Pizza Hut had provided some sponsor money, if I recall correctly, so there was one character who was always inexplicably eating pizza, and the Pizza Hut logo was frequently on display. The fans made so many memes about it. I've heard that if you watch the series now, the logos have all been removed. But I don't actually know for sure. I'll certainly never forget the Pizza Hut version though!

Your comment reminded me of a stretch of time where all my emails from Amazon were coming in Spanish. I do read and speak some Spanish, but I couldn't figure out why it kept defaulting to that.

So much louder than the show;
intrusive;
often gross or disturbing or upsetting.
I DO like stand-alone viral ads on youtube - I don't mean ads embedded in a non-ad video (I hate those!) I mean youtube videos where the whole video is nothing but one cute/funny ad that people can opt in to watch.
Ads on paid streaming services make me really angry - if the streaming service is making me watch ads without my consent, why am I bothering to pay instead of just torrenting?

I am always a bit baffled by people who mention ads on YouTube because I never see ads on YT. I use Firefox as my browser with uBlock Origin ad blocker and it apparently also kills video ads as well as regular static website ads. The only time I've ever seen an ad on YT was when I used the YT app on my smart TV to watch a YT video, and that was the last time I ever used that app.

CDrama has terribly bad and intrusive product placement (on top of ads - which i usually dont see on youtube because i use an adblocker) that i find extremely annoying, especially if the characters keep talking about the product to each other in-verse in addition to constantly using it. The upside is that those are usually products that I cannot even buy here, so they shouldn't bother me as much. They still do.
Amazon Prime has the nasty habit of showing you ads on top of making you pay for the subscription, which is something I really don't like. I am already paying.

Yes, I have ad blockers online, don't listen to commercial radio, and have ad-free subscriptions so most stuff passes me by. But I agree that having stuff ad free and then having to sit through something anyway is aggravating. There's likely something in the ToS that you agree to but no one should have to sift through that to find out.

Other services like Paramount or Hulu are also now offering live TV viewing of their broadcast and cable networks, though these are limited to just a few options. I watched The Emmys that way last month via ABC livestream.
