Community: Home Base

The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, "Community" focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, "The Soup"), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs ("The Book of Daniel"); Yvette Nicole Brown ("Rules of Engagement"); Danny Pudi ("Greek"); Alison Brie ("Mad Men"); and comedy legend Chevy Chase ("Saturday Night Live").

Episode 5 Discussion
So Troy leaves for his trip around the world. Of course Abed has some issues with this. He sets a contest for his comic book which is valued at 50K which sets off a frenzy similar to the paintball competition. Everyone must avoid touching the floor (Which Abed says is lava) or they lose. What are your thoughts on this episode?
Re: Episode 5 Discussion
My first thoughts were that I played that game as a kid, and I had no idea it was A Thing. lol
I pretty much loved this episode, particularly that it was Britta (versus Annie, not that I don't love Annie) who was so involved in what was happening with Troy and Abed and who also had the idea of "cloning" Abed so he could move on.
Also loved the game and the whole Road Warriors/Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome feel. And the Britta-Jeff showdown. Everyone's goodbyes were sweet, and I totally teared up. Levar Burton was a nice surprise. I wish Donald Glover wasn't leaving and hope he'll come back if there's another season. This show fights so hard to stick around every year, and Troy's so beloved.
And I can't forget: Magnitude: "I'm actually British!"

I'm really glad Dan Harmon is back; he's the only one who can capture the lightning in the bottle that is Community's vibe.
Magnitude is British! hahahahaha
Re: Episode 5 Discussion
I loved Britta and Jeff's fight. I love that Britta thought of using make-believe to help Abed too. And Levar Burton at the end was just perfect.

Re: Episode 5 Discussion
Did you see the S5 LotR-style trailer? There is definitely more Britta stuff coming up, and I am curious and a little nervous to see how it plays out.
But yeah, Geothermal Escapism was monumental, and I cried like a baby. If there isn't a sixth season, or if there is but Donald won't come back for at least the very last episode, I feel like I will have to clone myself.

Re: Episode 6 Discussion
Question: I either don't remember or don't know who the girl Abed went to have dinner with at the end is (I stopped watching last season; is she from then?).
My favorite cameo was Robert Patrick for some reason. He's just really great at being a dick, lol.
My DVR cut off the very end! What happened with whatever "Arcadia" was?

And there were a bunch of lines that I know were hilarious, but I have unfortunately forgotten them already. Basically, this show is never not completely awesome.

From what I can tell a lot of shows will be taking mini breaks for the Olympics.

Re: Episode 7 Discussion
The ghost story with Chang had me amused. I agree that Abed needs to learn to take responsibility for his actions and was it me or did it seem like the rest of the group weren't in this episode as much? Overall this episode seems really...fillery. It just feels kinda okay to me. Not bad or good. Kinda mediocre.
Re: Episode 7 Discussion
The Chang ghost stuff was the most fun in the episode, with the vague Sixth Sense and then The Shining references. The rest was on the serious side, but I like that about the show, that it's not The Gag and Pop Culture Riff Show. It's not a live action Family Guy. So, in a way the episode was as if Abed and Hickey had written it together. :)
And Jeff and Prof Duncan actually behaving like friends was cool, too. It is aggravating when shows act like friendships consist of characters being dickish to each other.
Re: Episode 7 Discussion
Also I totally agree with you on the friendship stuff - it's nice when they show any of the characters actually act like friends they are supposed to be.
Re: Episode 7 Discussion
Re: Episode 7 Discussion
And all the Chang stuff was gold. Both because I love that sort of wtf ghosts and because CHANG. That guy is funny just sitting in a chair.
Re: Episode 7 Discussion
Also ... yes, Ken Jeong is just so fantastic: our Rewind button always gets a workout whenever he's on screen.
Episode 8 Discussion
So I really liked this episode. Jeff and Shirley don't get a lot of screen time but I find myself really enjoying their interactions. The end with Britta kinda made me sad because I feel like she's always seen as a downer. She's a psych major but she's not very good at being social I think. Sort of like Abed.
What were your thoughts on this episode?
Re: Episode 8 Discussion
I enjoyed Jeff and Shirley getting to that place where they recognize their own tendencies in one another (or the root of their tendencies). And Abed really not liking being a 5, lol.
Britta and the mustard was hilarious to me. It doesn't make me sad at all that she's "the worst" and not at all fit to be a psychologist. ALL the characters have their poor social tendencies, but it's part of why they fit together, and each one of them deals with being the butt of the joke in some way sometimes. Britta's my favorite because she's most like me and people I know.

Re: Episode 9 Discussion
Not crazy about the text book storyline; it felt like they didn't know what to do with those characters for this episode. I did laugh at Chang's "confession," though.
I liked Annie and Abed's storyline a lot more, and I'm glad they addressed Troy's absence and how that's affected the two's dynamic. Did we know Annie had a brother? I didn't watch most of last season, so I don't know if he was introduced then. "Pile of Bullets" was hilarious all around, but typically, both Annie and Abed got it. Abed's apology to his girlfriend at the end was sweet. And Annie and Abed briefly considering Britta as a roommate and deciding against it was amusing.
Oh, and the opener with "Payday" Dean made me laugh pretty hard.
