The Walking Dead Homebase + Primer

So sorry about not getting this up earlier, life just kind of got away from me this week/weekend.

This is the homebase for the TV Show The Walking Dead to enable us to discuss each week's episode as it airs.

First a brief primer:

Overview:

Based on the comic book of the same name (Note: The show diverges from the comic in a lot of ways, so it's not necessarily essential to read the comic to follow along with the show), the series focuses on a group of survivors follwoing an attack that turned most of the world's population into zombies or as this show's characters call them 'Walkers.' The show focuses on the survivors trying to find a safe haven away from the walkers all the while trying to retain what is left of their own humanity. Lead by former sherrif's deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln, the group struggles to survive while facing Walkers at everyturn as well as the often changing dynamics of the group as well as the very worst human themselves have to offer.

In the season 4 mid - season finale, the group was forced to leave their prison sanctuary after a devestating attack by the Governor (David Morriessy)

Characters: (as of S4)

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) - The leader of the group, and father to Carl and Judith. Was in a coma when the Walkers first arose.

Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) - Rick's eldest child. Has had to grow up very fast in this new world.

Darryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) - The hunter of the group.

Glenn Rhee (Steven Yuen) - Former pizza delivery man prior to the Walker apocalypse. Currently engaged to Maggie Greene

Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) - the firey daughter of Hershel Greene and sister of Beth Greene, currently engaged to Glenn.

Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) - Maggie's soft - spoken sister and Hershel's daughter.

Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) - former domestic abuse survivor, Carol has taken the losses she has suffered by the Walker apocalypse to empower herself. Currently exiled from Rick's group.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) - a fierce, Katana welding woman who joined Rick's group during Season 3.

Tyrese (Chad Coleman) - a survivor along with his sister Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) from Jacksonville. They joined Rick's group towards the end of Season 3.

I'll try to get pictures and a more detailed bio up on these characters and past characters soon.

I found the stuff with Carl a bit repetitious, but the Michonne-ness was amazeballs. I'm not sure I've ever seen a flashback and dream combined like that.

I don't even know where to start.

I didn't expect Carol to be back so soon!

Big Sister (lol I can't remember the blonde girls' names yet) almost killed Judith. I kind of feel like Tyreese shouldn't have left them. He told them to run together; couldn't they all have run to check out what was going on?

I like Daryl and Beth together, and that we're getting more Beth generally. I'm wondering why Daryl was reluctant to get going at first. Shock? Weariness? Doubt?

I also liked the way the episode was structured.

I got totally absorbed and only flipped back to the Oscars during commercials. I loved this episode. Daryl and Beth are a great duo--really interesting. I love finding more out about Beth especially because I feel like we didn't know much about her before. What we learn about Daryl felt pretty expected to me (not in a bad way), but watching the two of them deal with one another and form a tighter bond was fascinating and moving. Although I totes thought they were going to have sex, lol.

Man, this episode wrung me out. I had so many different feelings and judgments rolling around in my brain. I had both liked the way Carol had become more complicated as a character and yet was not on board with what she did at the prison. Here I was not on board with some of what she said to Mika in particular, but I understood the connection she was making to the loss of Sophia.

With Lizzie, the last time we saw her, I knew that was going to be a problem. I spent a lot of this episode (I suppose like Carol) wondering about the exact nature of Lizzie's...misunderstanding. Mental illness? Something PTSD-related? It was difficult because I couldn't remember her from earlier in the season. When had this started? Back at the prison, I know. But I even thought about her killing animals and such almost like what budding serial killers do. I know it's not the same thing, but...man. And if she is ill, it seems especially horrible to have to kill her, but what else could they do? I think the mistake was that it wasn't done soon enough, that they let her keep a weapon. It seems like there's no "middle ground" between Lizzie's killing the living and Mika not being willing to kill the living. Is the middle ground Carl? Whatever happened with his killing a living person who'd surrendered?

I'm interested in how Tyreese seemed not to be too much a part of what was going on with the girls. How they made this a mother/daughter type thing.

I didn't expect or wasn't sure Tyreese would find out this episode that Carol was responsible for the murders. At that point in the episode, his reaction didn't surprise me.

Totally harrowing episode.

Yikes, I haven't felt so horrified and frightened since the Governor threatened to rape Maggie. I loved the theme and discussions of who's a good or bad person (monster) in this world this episode and lately. It's such a huge part of the comics, so I like when it's highlighted on the show.

Loved the nod to Andrea when Michonne talks about how she was "saved." I still miss Andrea, although I know lots of people didn't like her.

I'm surprised Rick, Carl, and/or Michonne didn't ask Daryl about Judith (seeing or her anything). Now that I think of it, where was Judith? Did we see her in the boxcar at the end? I remember seeing the powdered milk/formula packs outside.

Rick's not my favorite character, but I definitely prefer badass Rick to homestead Rick (as long as he's not Ricktatorship Rick). I'm still wondering what happened to Beth and assume that will come into play next season.

That's true about Rick and Carl's assumptions; I forgot they saw that (or forgot who saw it).

Hm, it hadn't occurred to me that Beth might be the "meal," though I considered she might be around (imprisoned or a part of this group, depending), and I was puzzled by how they worked her into the episode in flashbacks, especially when she got Rick's hat. But the way she was taken off in that car with the cross...I think something else has happened and she'll be back.

BUT now I'm wondering if Judith was the meal. :/
