sort of live blogging. You know what's incredibly hot? mentor/mentee relationships where we see the mentee step up and start to BAMF all over the place. I feel like plain old shipping Sherlock/Watson here would do their relationship a disservice. Their bond is, like, profound.

Oh my goodness, their ~boundary issues are adorable. Kinda feel like Joan's right tho. Comparing this scene, where he solves her case, juxtaposed with the opening scene, tells me that there is going to be a discussion.

[personal profile] laisserais 2013-11-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Aha. The discussion is handled in classic Sherlock-Watson style: Watson baldly states her needs; Sherlock ignores her statement in favor of his current line of inquiry. <3 Can't wait for her to end up solving this all by herself.

AH! Sherlock has come to appreciate ~partnership. And SMALL GESTURES. (Although I don't think giving your estranged wife a dog is a small gesture.)

Interesting that show went there and paralleled marriage to partnership. It feels like a ship hint. Sherlock's secret look at Watson, though, gave me FEELS. I secretly love it when he's more self-aware than he lets on.

Hm. I feel like I'm missing something lately, in this show. It's slipping out of my grasp and I don't know why!

Interesting juxtaposition though, between this ep and the last one, in regards to both Sherlock and Watson secretly sleeping with people the other one's close to. Weird.

And kind of though I don't buy that Joan would have slept with Mycroft? I don't see it. And it was weird, too, that when Sherlock was confronting her about her motivations about sleeping with Mycroft, she said something to the effect of 'if I had a sister and you slept with her' when just last week he'd slept with her friend, which was almost equivalent. Why not bring that up? And how come they each handled these revelations so differently?

I don't really know if i buy Joan Sleeping with Mycroft either. I don't know why though.

i really enjoyed all the scenes with Sherlock & Mycroft though. Clearly while last season was all about Joan & Sherlock, this season is all about them interacting with other people.

Yes, I liked how Mycroft shook Sherlock. This could of course be down to how much I enjoy watching Johnny Lee Miller's face contort. ;)

Yeah, I think you're onto something with how they're trying to open up the world. But where's Sherlock's sponsor? Where is Mrs. whatshername? The sense of closeness or of bonding is...changing. I am enjoying how good Watson is at deducing, though. That's pretty great.

Gah! I really enjoyed this all the way through. Sherlock and Mycroft's interactions were lovely, and I was really pleased with how he and Joan handled the whole moving question. Like grown-ups! (One of the things I love about this show is that it allows its characters to be grownups!)

But that reveal -- sooooo upsetting. Mycroft? Really??? My immediate response is why does everyone close to Sherlock who's not Joan have to betray him horribly? It makes me sad.

But it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Also, I was bummed by the conspicuous lack of Alfredo in Sherlock's list of his suppor network. It makes me think he's never coming back. Which is sad enough on its own, but it also annoys me when shows drop characters and ACT LIKE THEY NEVER EXISTED. Would it be so hard to say, "I miss Alfredo, too bad he moved to Boston" or something?

Hi! I'm [personal profile] merryghoul, and I'm taking over the homebase for Elementary! I've decided to take over the current homebase, so I'll be posting threads for each new episode every week for discussion and whatnot.

Since there wasn't a thread for "Dead Clade Walking" (which aired on January 30), I've decided to make one here. This week's thread is, well, below.

Not sure about how I feel about the bisexual ballet dancer, since another show just coincidentally made a character bisexual this week, and I didn't like how that show handled that situation.

Really loved the introduction of Joan backstory we got, and the ending was lovely as well.

Come to think of it, the person who committed the bombing in this one revealed themselves pretty early on. Wonder what took the rest of the characters so long to figure that one out...

But it was another great episode. The "cocks" parts were hilarious.

Although I'm still wondering what Sherlock is going to do with those Yorkshire puddings.

Very interesting case, what with the multiple dentures floating around Newgate and elsewhere. (I get Newgate is a homage to the original books/London, but I'm skeptical if a prison called Newgate could exist in the US. Maybe it's me.)

Also, Clyde has sweaters now! Hopefully we'll see Ms. Hudson back soon.

And the treasure hunt mentioned in the episode sounds like a good premise to write a fic for, IMO. Maybe I'll write it...

I remember seeing a pic on the Elementary writers' twitter account that had Ms. Hudson listed on it in an upcoming episode. FTR, I don't know how involved Ms. Hudson will be as far as the plot of that particular episode, but it'd be nice to see her back on the show. :)

This was a very solid and satisfying episode. The mystery wan an interesting (but not labyrinthine) puzzle, the team worked together, and Clyde showed up (wearing turtle!cozies knitted by Ms. Hudson!).

I also enjoyed the background history on Joan and that she was able to put some of her guilt to rest.

Great episode! So many moments to choose from...well, except for the CGI mosquito drone, lol. The animation for it was cheap and I can sense it.

Happy to see Joan and Mycroft's relationship expanded on. I was scared their only mention of them sleeping together was going to be the show's Big Lipped Alligator Moment. I'm starting to ship them now, but their relationship is doomed, I know it.

Nothing special with the case (and its twists), but other than that, the episode was funny. Sherlock suggesting he and Mycroft share Joan and Joan responding she'll do things to his privates! Sherlock offering Joan breakfast in bed only to talk about Mycroft! Sherlock telling the mosquito drone to leave Joan and him along with index cards! Too many !!! moments for me, to be honest.

Really excited for next week's episode because Lucy Liu directed it.

Hey, Elementary is back! I've missed you, show :)

I thought this was an excellent episode that looked at the way Sherlock relates (or indeed fails to relate) to people. What I love most about this show is that Sherlock is more self-aware than other incarnations, but also other characters (Watson, mostly, but in this episode definitely Mycroft too) call him on his bullshit all the time.

I never really care for the case, the character work is what keeps me watching and it was great this week. I liked Mycroft, Joan and Sherlock in this bizarre love/friendship triangle, and I'm very interested where this is leading.

Also very interested in where things are going in general because THAT ENDING. *shakes fist*

It was a fairly good episode (and not only because of that teeny-tiny cameo from Ms. Hudson). Though I'm not exactly thrilled about Joan/Mycroft, I do like seeing Sherlock's interactions with his brother.

I do wish TPTB had brought the mystery (of who exactly is Mycroft working with) somewhat earlier in the season. Season 2 has had less oomph (except for the Detective Marcus Bell storyline) than S1. I feel that the show lost a bit of momentum because there wasn't a tangible threat or big mystery for Sherlock and Joan to get entangled with. YMMV.

Re: EPISODE 2.22: Paint It Black

[personal profile] glitteryv 2014-05-05 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
There were several things I liked about this ep: the mystery, the dynamic between Sherlock and Mycroft, L3GOL4S, and the reveal that Mycroft is much more than what Sherlock gives him credit for. One of my fave scenes was the Holmes brothers going to the crooked Swiss bank. I really dug seeing the two of them standing in similar poses, Sherlock's mannerisms and general twitchiness when Mycroft spoke to the manager. It worked very well in filling any gaps as to their background history as siblings. Lucy Liu did a wonderful job directing.

I was less enthused with the lack of Capt. Gregson, Det. Bell, Clyde, Ms. Hudson, and Alfredo.

Watson's b-plot was OK. I understand that Lucy had to step back since she was also directing the episode, but I felt that the show was lacking Joan-ness.

Overall, the episode delivered on many levels.

ETA: I did think it was a little strange that Sherlock wouldn't know who Legolas could be (in the literally context). After all, J.R.R. Tolkien is a fairly famous author (made even more famous after the LotR movies premiered). In all truth, it wouldn't be weird to think that Sherlock might've picked up a volume and/or watched a movie at least once. YMMV.

I really like Mycroft as a character. I was completely convinced by the lazy restauranteur thing (though a bit bemused considering canon), and I think there's still a certain ambiguity to Mycroft's character in Elementary that I really like.

But Mycroft unbalances the dynamics of the show in a way that I'm not convinced that I like. I.e. when Mycroft is around, sometimes we get Sherlock and Joan dynamic that I love, the other characters that I love, etc., but sometimes Mycroft seems to take over.

And I'm not totally against that in short doses, it's really an interesting perspective, but I'm not sure I appreciate Mycroft in large doses. So I'm good with this plot, I'm really interested in how it's unfolding...but I'm also hoping that he'll retreat into the background again at some point... Here for the finale and then next season we'll be back to normal.

(If not, I can put a spoiler cut text thing here.)

Oh, wow.

Not as charming as last year's finale, but it was still great.

Loved the callbacks to things seen in ACD books and short stories. I think the Irregulars are now random people with webcams and webchat abilities? But I loved that they were represented in foiling the crooked MI6 agent.

Instead of Sherlock "falling," Mycroft was the one to "fall." I liked that twist.

Poor Joan. The whole MI6 thing destroyed her relationship with Mycroft. I feel bad for her, unlike some people that have been complaining about Joan/Mycroft for most of the season. She clearly wants a life outside of Sherlock and his (murder) mysteries, but Sherlock can't seem to handle life without her...for now. And even though some people didn't like the idea of Joan/Mycroft (but are fine with the show not sticking to ACD's books and short stories to the letter), Joan really thought Mycroft could make her happy, Sherlock or no Sherlock.

I don't like the open ending for this season, but since it already has a third season in the works, it's okay for now. Sherlock working with MI6 will certainly put a kink in his relationships with Joan and the NYPD.

Oh, and that library Mycroft was stashed in was gorgeous.

Re: EPISODE 2:24: The Grand Experiment (Season Finale)

[personal profile] glitteryv 2014-05-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm truly of two minds about this episode (as well as S2 as a whole).

OTOH, I liked that Sherlock actually told Joan how he felt about her moving out and that he did it from a sincere (and not snarky) place. That said, I did like Joan's reply, that she saw the moving out as something she needed to do for herself.

I also liked Mycroft's hugging Sherlock good-bye. Regardless of their years-long animosity, the Holmes brothers do connect on some level.

OTOH, I didn't really care for Mycroft pulling a fast one basically over everyone or that Gregson and Bell were kept somewhat out of the loop.

It wasn't the best season finale episode. I think that TPTB shoehorned Mycroft so much into the latter part of the season that, at least for me, it was kinda hard to feel for him. Mind you, I like the character but I didn't really see much chemistry between Mycroft and Joan.

At this point, I'm curious about what's going to happen in S3 yet, at the same time, I feel like S2 could've been so much more engaging. YMMV.
