Friday Current TV Discussion Post

It's time to talk about currently airing shows again!!!

Some shows that have aired since our last current shows discussion post:
[if you want to talk about events in earlier episodes, please feel free]

Criminal Minds
Legends
Nashville (already being talked about over here)
Red Band Society
The Mysteries of Laura
Bones
Gracepoint
Haven
How to Get Away with Murder
Parenthood
Reign
Scandal
The Vampire Diaries

[among other things, I'm sure]

Feel free to talk about any of the current shows you are watching.

Please keep things non-spoilery unless you want to do spoiler text by turning the text white.

How to do spoiler text on DW:

Use white text. Remember to include beginning/closing brackets and/or other demarcations, so people will know there's a spoiler there, not just a bunch of random white space.

[Spoiler:your spoilery text]

produces this: [Spoiler:your spoilery text]

I'm not caught up on most of these shows yet, so feel free to make your own comment threads and discuss what you've watched :)

Yeah, I liked her introduction, too, and her character is interesting. Spoiler:And I'm curious about the girl- daughter, sister? I like it when the characters are seen to have bonds to other people besides the team.
But seeing the Ghost Whisperer on Criminal Minds and not have it a wacky crossover was a bit weird to me. *g*

The scenes at the end let me hope for a story arc which spans the whole of the season, or maybe a good chunk of it.

[Spoiler:I do, too. It's one of the reasons I like JJ so much, and Aaron with his son and Beth. I don't think it's her daughter because the girl called her 'Kate'. ]

That set up did seem like a lead in to a significant story arc. I'm with you on that. It seems like it could be really interesting, too.

Spoiler:Yeah, I mostly thought adoptive daughter. Maybe even one of the girls she rescued? They did talk about her being in Andy Swan's unit after all.

[Spoiler:Yeah, it was pretty clear from that first scene that she dealt with child predators, so that's logical. ] In any case, interesting and I look forward to next week! ;)

Did the new character [Spoiler:seem awfully competent for day 1? I know she has 8 years experience but I didn't expect her to offer up her opinion first at the round table and then almost take the lead when her and Rossi were talking to the first suspect. They made a not-so-subtle hint that she's pretty jaded. And they're already foreshadowing her brilliance in suspecting something more is going on with the abducted women (ie. the internet ring we saw at the end).
I guess they did insert enough hints about successful cases and whatnot. Maybe it only felt abrupt to me.
Otherwise, I do like her spunk and think she has potential.

Spoiler:I was a bit surprised at first, but then - I don't know. I guess, for being a successful undercover agent and working as trap for pedophiles etc one has to be a pretty good profiler already. So it kinda makes sense.

[Spoiler:Yes, by the end of the episode it was making sense, it just felt abrupt. On the other hand we don't have to ease into her too much now, it's like ripping off a bandaid - haha!

I just know whenever I work with a new team (granted my job is entirely different, but there's still a team dynamic) I first take time to observe the team to see how it operates and then find a place in it - I don't just jump in during the first five minutes of my first meeting like that. Aaaaaand now I'm seeing that I'm bringing my own work frustration about a new coworker into this - haha. Oh my.

Spoiler:*g* Maybe we can just write it up to different personalities? It's definitely open to interpretations.

I mean, we saw Prentiss trying to find her way into the team, we saw Rossi playing his cards close and not contributing much at first, we got to see Blake almost established as a team member from the beginning. Maybe Callahan feels comfortable enough in her skin that being with a new team doesn't stop her from simply being herself.

But yeah, I do bring analogue life stuff into my fandoms all the time, I totally get you there.

I am watching "Madame Secretary" and so far I'm liking it a lot. It's a smartly written show, and Téa Leoni is a good fit with her character. I like the family stuff and the work stuff, too. Actually, I liked all of the actors and think they were well-cast. I'm sticking with it so far.

I agree with everything you've said. It has the right amount of tension (not too much, not too little) and a very good cast. Seems so believable, too.

Scandal

[personal profile] glitteryv 2014-10-04 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I liked this week's episode (even though we still don't know what the main storyline's going to be). One of the things that I'm applauding is the way TPTB are making Fitz so gorram likable again! IMHO, Fitz threw a season-long tantrum in S3 up until Spoiler:his older son was murdered. (End of spoiler).

Last night, Fitz charmed everyone while giving his State of the Union speech. Mellie deffo knocked it out of the park as well.

Watching Abby doing her job last night, I kept thinking about Shonda Rhimes' tidbit of this season being all about Abby. I think that Spoiler:the show is slowly but surely setting up an Olivia vs. Abby fight. Mostly because Abby seemed very annoyed at Cyrus going behind her back to Olivia. (End of spoiler).

Dunno what to make of the RNC woman. If she's meant to be one of this season's villains, she's not doing a good job of it. YMMV.

How To Get Away with Murder

[personal profile] glitteryv 2014-10-04 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta say that I liked this episode a lot more than the pilot. Viola Davis as Analise was superb! The rest of the cast was good too. It was neat to see all the new bits and pieces added to the scenes in the present. Sorta reminded me of S1 of Damages (where they used a similar technique of telling a story in two separate timelines until they merge into the present).

Maybe it's the fact that Analise basically toys with everyone but (Spoiler):I'm not entirely convinced that she wasn't playing her cop boyfriend. Though it's true that she was tearing up at the end of the episode, I don't quite buy the idea of her being (suddenly) scared of her husband (end of spoiler).

At this point in the series, I'm not exactly rooting for anyone in particular. All the characters are varying degrees of terrible people doing horrible things. The OTTness of the narrative is so powerful that I can overlook/handwave all the unethical things the lawyers do in this show.
