"Survival isn't who you are. It's who you become."

Premise
A century after Earth was made uninhabitable by a nuclear war, the survivors - descendants of the crews of several space stations orbiting at the time - send down a hundred teenagers to the surface in a desperate bid to find out whether it is habitable again. The teenagers, each convicted of (largely petty) crimes and thus "expendable", are now alone on a (supposedly) uninhabited planet while, on the Ark, the adults try and find a way to eke out their dwindling resources. Each group is split by opposing agendas and interpersonal conflicts, fighting to survive not just their environments as well as each other.

News just in: "The 100" has been renewed for season 2

After the shocking death of one of their own, Clarke and Finn grow closer as they try to figure out a way to communicate with the Ark. Bellamy must keep the group from turning on one another as life on Earth takes a desperate turn. Meanwhile, Abby risks having herself floated in order to give Raven the chance to stow-away in the escape pod bound for Earth.

This episode was all about relationships and character arcs: the clearly misplaced sibling/protective feels Bellamy has for Charlotte (poor kid, she was so messed up, but can you imaging Bellamy having to keep Olivia quiet, protected on the Ark before they got caught? I'm thinking Charlotte was triggering all those instincts in him); Bellamy and Clarke starting to work together and Bellamy starting to realise that not only did he set out to rule those kids but, by doing so, he made himself responsible for them; Clarke's relationship with her Mom (how even separated by, oh, an atmosphere and a heap of vacuum they still end up hurting and motivating each other); Jasper and Olivia being adorbs, and; Finn and Clarke supporting each other (although I could so do without all that yucky kissing at the end, dnw). Finn turning out to be Raven's boyf is just... disappointing. I thought she had better taste, Finn is just so Blah. Useful to have around, but uninspiring and a bit too smug. I liked it but I don't know, I think this episode was kind of underwhelming. I expected more drama and more yelling and debating instead of an episode of kids running around the forest. Even Charlotte's story feels very quickly wrapped up without them having to actually resolve the issue. Also Murphy is a dick but, seriously, they string him up, beat him up, clearly tell him that he is cared about less than a kid who actually admits to murder and still at the end they punish him, they banish him. I do think this will come back to bite them. I don't think for one second that he's going to actually skulk off into the shadows to never be seen again. It would be interesting to see if some of the other guys go off to him as well so that we end up with two groups of kids fighting for dominance. We know that more kids that just Charlotte have killed people, we're told that in an aside by Bellamy, so there might come a point where the rougher edges, the more anti-social members of the 100 just can't be contained by the group. And banishment seems an amazing way to conveniently split people off.

I'm unconvinced by the stuff on the Ark. That seems a lot like the usual boring power plays and egos clashing and Trust No One bs. I liked the supportive relationship of Abby and Raven (omg Abby don't die!) but, to be honest, could have fast forwarded through the rest of it.

I had been wondering who Raven's bf was going to end up being. I was a little bit surprised that it was Finn, but I guess they are setting up the "traditional" love triangle this way.

Banishment was actually an extremely common punishment in older societies. The fear of banishment was often stronger than the fear of death and was a very strong deterrent. It was often considered a softer punishment that death though, because the person at least had a chance to survive.

Do I think they made the right choice in banishing Murphy? I think Murphy was a problem that needed to be dealt with. Will banishing him come back to bite them on the ass? Probably. It does seem to be that kind of show.
