This is just a random comment:

Why does Hollywood continue to pump out new shows by the dozens, when they don't even give them half a chance to succeed? There's nothing more annoying than getting hooked on a new show, only to have it be abruptly cancelled and you're left hanging forever!

'V', anyone?

I get the feeling they either don't do focus groups anymore, or are so completely surprised at what does succeed that they just toss things out with a "whatever sticks" mentality. (And if there's fan response I guess they feel they can sell it to someone else to be continued? I dunno.)

The "half season" thing seems to be taking off more and more (or maybe that's my imagination?)

I wonder how much the success of the UK's standard of short series (and Doctor Who's "split season") have had on American television?
