Why does Hollywood continue to pump out new shows by the dozens, when they don't even give them half a chance to succeed? There's nothing more annoying than getting hooked on a new show, only to have it be abruptly cancelled and you're left hanging forever!

The "half season" thing seems to be taking off more and more (or maybe that's my imagination?)

I think you are right about this. I've seen some interviews with actors who aren't willing to do the whole 22 episode show thing but will do the shorter seasons. I think it works better for some shows creating tighter storytelling and I think other shows work better with longer seasons.
It's probably less of an investment (time and money) for the studios as well I guess.
