That's definitely possible. But Derek would only need to make Isaac leave to get him away from Derek if he thought he could be persuaded to kill him which is still kind of defeatist. Unless it's to get Isaac to leave him in order to protect him from Derek getting him killed rather than killing him. In which case, um, I can see him having that thought process.

It was my interpretation that Derek is afraid of the alpha pack and what they might be able to do, including perhaps even manipulating Derek somehow to kill Isaac. So instead of telling Isaac "hey I have this fear that I might hurt you which is why it's best for you to go" he just does the typical Derek thing of shutting him out and pushing him away, SIGH.

And he was doing so well with his words this year.

I think, at the base of both of our interpretations, is that Derek doesn't want to hurt Isaac (physically) so he's being mean to him and hurting him (emotionally). Which is excellent Derek logic.

Yeah, either way, that's the crux of the matter. Good way of putting it. Emotional pain to prevent physical pain. 1000% Derek logic all the way.
