The S3 premiere of Interview with the Vampire was a wild ride and I'm honestly not sure what to think. Although now that it's been a few days, I'm leaning towards "it was good". That is a completely different show though. I get the name change now, it's still IWTV to me (and many, if not most, others), but I get it. We now get Lestat's POV, so another extremely unreliable narrator. With it comes a rather jarring change of style and pace. That's why I'm not 100% sure what to think yet, although I feel like the premiere was supposed to be as different as possible. When we get into more flashbacks (and I'm sure they'll come), it might feel a bit more like the previous two seasons again. Daniel is awesome though. I love his interactions with Lestat. I hope we'll get much more of that.
I caught up on Widow's Bay just before episode 9. Unfortunately I was spoiled for the latest episode because by now a couple of people I follow on tumblr watch the show. It wasn't too bad though. How we arrived there was amusing enough ;) I'll make sure to watch the finale a bit quicker though. The show was renewed for a second season. Before I watched the show, and even throughout the first couple of episodes, I thought it was a miniseries. Now I'm happy we'll get more of it! I think you can make this premise work for a couple of seasons.
It's not very "horror". That said, I rarely find horror things "horror-ish". My brain doesn't let me forget that it's all fake/CGI/special effects/etc., so doesn't make any any sense to get "scared". Same reason why I very rarely find anything "too violent" in tv shows -- it's all very carefully choreographed/special effects, make-up, etc., in other words, not real, so doesn't make sense to get be bothered by it. Whereas in real life, I can't even handle two people having a heated argument.
But yeah, Widow's Bay is more comedic than horror, at least so far (I'm about 4 episodes in).
Horror isn't usually my thing either. I rarely watch horror movies. The first couple of episodes have some jump scares which I really don't like. I would say you get used to the show's type of horror though and some episodes have more horror elements than others. I would also say that the comedy helps breaking it up. I always watch during the day and I know someone I follow on tumblr does, too lol
This week, I finished watching season 5 of For All Mankind, and season 4 of The Morning Show, finally.
In terms of new shows, I started season 2 of Criminal Record, and Widow's Bay. With regards to that last one, I wasn't going to bother with it because it didn't really sound like my sort of thing. But there was/is SO MUCH HYPE around Widow's Bay -- I mean the Guardian is just nuts about it -- so I figured I'd check it out. And alas, I fear it's a victim of the hype. I mean it's fine, nothing wrong with it, I was just expecting more? I'll probably finish it, but don't think it would end up on any "best TV of 2026" list for me (whereas the Guardian already has it on its list of best TV shows so far this year).
Other than that, this week's episodes of Welcome to Wrexham and Criminal Minds, and baseball, tennis and the World Cup. Which is pretty much what I'm looking forward to for the coming week...
I enjoyed it. The Morning Show is a bit weird for me -- I always enjoy it when I watch it, but for reasons I can't explain, I have a hard time motivating myself to actually watch it.
I get that, I have some shows I watch that I need to be in the mood for. Others are kind of the reverse. I want to know what happens in 1923 but I don't enjoy the episodes very much.
I quite like the series -- I don't feel there's anything quite like it out there, especially with so many women in lead roles. I find I have a preference for shows where alliances come and go and return, and whether this happens has a lot to do with plot development.
I like Widow's Bay, but I am surprised by how popular it has become. That said, I'm happy about every show that is slightly different breaking out and I just like Matthew Rhys.
We've been watching season 1 of Blocco 181, an Italian show about drug dealers, with an m/m/f central relationship (contains explicit sex scenes). It's very tense a lot of the time, and I'm looking forward to season 2.
Also, the Glaswegian sitcom Dinosaur, about an autistic woman and her sister. We've just started season 2 of that.
Continuing our rewatch of People of Earth. Such a good show. I'm pre-emptively mourning it's unresolved ending.
A bit more standup in the form of Night Train with Wyatt Cenac on Youtube.
And still going on Miraculous Brothers (Kdrama), where I'm finally getting a handle on who everyone is. The mystery is twisty and well-done, and the central character is morally wobbly but doing his best.
My sister and I appear to be watching White Collar from the beginning, plus a bit of Bluey.
And in solo watching, I'm trying a few things. I might have accidentally started a rewatch of m/f romance Cdrama Nothing But You (AKA Nothing But Love).
I'm current on Daily Show, Jeopardy, The 1% Club, The Floor, and am partway through the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham.
I finished S3 of Star Wars Visions. I think it's an interesting project but have decided it is just not my thing. Ultimately, I don't care what something looks like, I care about whether the story grabs me. And while I've looked some better than others, none of them have.
By comparison I also finished Maul and quite liked it. By the third episode I was hooked and it had a great finish which, I should hope, will continue into another season.
I saw most of Heated Rivalry -- I watched part of Ep 1 but then skipped to 3 because I understood it was the standalone story. I quite liked that, and then watched the remaining episodes. I can see how it's ending was a resolution, but it also felt like just the beginning of a full relationship to me, so I'm glad there will be more.
We watched another episode of 1923, are onto a new season of Brokenwood, and finished Bookish. I liked the final story the best, both because it moved along Book's personal life and also had a pretty good mystery (though frankly the reason for the murder came out of nowhere). I would try a second season.
I also watched the Sea Lions of the Galapagos film. I have never liked AMSR but I can totally understand the relaxation part of it. Aside from the visuals, I found Brendan Fraser's narration very soothing.
I also watched the Pixar film Hoppers, which I wrote about.
I expect much of my viewing time in the coming month to be taken up by World Cup games, which I have also written about.
We recently finished watching The Great Food Truck Race all-stars series. That was a lot of fun.
After that we watched Prey, which is now my most favorite Predator movie ever. :D Watching a spacefarer get whacked by less technologically developed opponents was awesome. Plus a whole team of buffalo hunters got butchered, and that never gets old.
Tonight we watched the first episode of Starfleet Academy. I wasn't impressed. The tone was unappealing, the plot cluttered, and it didn't really feel like Star Trek to me. It had a few good moments, but honestly my favorite part was the admiral curled in the command chair reading a paper book. I'll give it another episode to see if it gets any better, though.
This week, I watched Widow's Bay, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (it's slowly losing me), Station Eleven (didn't feel it after the first two episodes, but it has grown on me since), and Taskmaster UK + AU. I also finally continued watching Shrinking after Brett Goldstein's character annoyed me enough to abandon S2 ages ago.
