I'm really enjoying Richard Gadd's Half Man, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone because it deals with really heavy topics. Still, I'm looking forward to the remaining three episodes! This week's episode was also pretty dark.

Spoilers for episode 3 Every week the theory of Ruben being a child sexual abuse victim becomes more plausible. The scene where he and Niall discuss the fake groping totally felt like he was talking about something else. This Tumblr post really summarises how I feel about Ruben as a character.

Otherwise, I'm still participating in the weekly Blake's 7 rewatch over at GPSC, and we've only just started season 3 again. It's such a big change in the show, but I do love this season.

The Gauda Prime Social Club! It's a discord. Alas I can no longer hang out there because when I got a new computer discord refused to let me access GPSC.

How frustrating! Are there a lot of Blake's 7 groups still active?

No, although it's pretty cool that there are any considering that it's a show that ended 45 years ago and was hard to find in the US when it was first airing and there's no official US DVD release.

Half Man definitely continues to be magnetic.

Some spoilery commentary on this weeks's episode:
I thought Niall's moral quandary absolutely horrifying this week. Every time he chooses Ruben for whatever reason, he denies himself — at the same time that he chooses the portion of himself that apparently doesn't exist without Ruben. It's fascinating and it's heartbreaking. Alby sitting by quietly in the courtroom both when Niall said what the others wanted to hear and when he spoke the truth was rather powerful. Joanna being understanding of Niall was touching, as was her plea for him to do the right thing. Lori is pretty awful as a mum but I can't help liking her, lol, she's a bit of a little shit.

But I confess I'm a bit surprised by the theory on Ruben's behaviour! I'd been reading him more as a "force of nature" kind of character, so to speak, some "chaotic neutral" entity that is as attractive as he is repulsive, a bit like Achilles (or how I view Achilles anyway), stuck in between acts of greatness and acts of great destruction. I suppose the show might tell, even if I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't offer any definitive answers on why he is as he is or how such a man could begin to change. He represents quite a real problem and it doesn't seem to me like our society can solve that problem as easily as it would like or need to, which only makes the situation more chilling and the plot more compelling...

It's really so fascinating to watch, as disturbing as it often can be. I can't wait to learn a bit more about the characters and see where the story takes us. Maybe one of the theories on Ruben's behaviour becomes more likely, although, as you said, they might not offer a definitive answer at all!

Watched a little more of Brawn and Starfleet Academy. Jeopardy also made another Alex Trebek episode available on Hulu, and there was another episode of Celebrity Jeopardy as well as another week of regular games. Colbert is back and I enjoyed his episode with Barrack Obama at the new presidential library.

Finished off the Secret History of the Mongols which was fairly unsatisfying. It was one of those with re-enactments and they all seemed the same after a while. Also, while I understand the scope was to discuss the empire that was established it was a lot of military campaign this and military campaign that. Still, it was a historical period I knew next to nothing about so it was interesting on that front.

Also finished up Percy Jackson, Daredevil Born Again, Soccer Meets America, and High Country which I wrote about. And I watched a documentary on Joan Baez's life which I wasn't very taken with. I was particularly curious since I had watched A Complete Unknown last year and was interested to see her take on the same events but there wasn't a lot of it there.

Began the first episode of Maul, and I don't have much to say about it yet, other than to note how animation keeps improving. Such a contrast to Clone Wars, Rebels and even early Bad Batch. (Probably particularly notable since Maul is a character in those first two). Also began watching Exile and will likely finish that this weekend.

For May the Fourth, we began a Mandalorian rewatch and got through half of S1. I don't know that we'll go any farther than S2 (especially as I rewatched S3 and S4 last year). But as it's the first time I've seen it again it was interesting to see what I did and didn't remember.

I haven't continued my re-watch of Interview with the Vampire, but two finales happened last week!

Let's start with Watson. I have said it many times, the show isn't that good. The writing is over-the-top, unrealistic, and downright questionable at times. The finale dialed that way up. Wow. I can't remember the S1 finale, but this one was a lot. It was filled with cliffhangers, overdramatic turns (including a breakup that came a bit out of nowhere and seems unnecessary). I don't think the finale cleared anything up. In the second half they throw in Suzy Eddie Izzard playing a pretty interesting character who will now go absolutely nowhere. The way Watson (was it Watson?) found her character was also ridiculous.
Overall, I enjoyed the show. It was bad but entertaining. However, I don't think I'll miss it.

Daredevil: Born Again's finale on the other hand was amazing. I have no idea what the general consensus is, but I loved it. I watched the last two episodes on Thursday, so I was already spoiled for one rather big thing, but without knowing the context, it was fine. I would be pretty mad if this show wasn't renewed. The finale set up some interesting things for next season.
spoilersObviously we didn't get to see Jessica and Luke's relationship develop, but was the finale hinting at them getting a spin-off?

Speaking of relationships, the show still could not get me to like Matt/Karen. I'm sorry, I don't see it. There is no chemistry there and I don't see a reason for them to be together. Marvel loves to shoehorn in a romance, but this is attempt number 2 for them, maybe try something else? I mean, I don't know what people think. I saw so much more online when the show was still on Netflix.

You can follow my link above where I talk about Daredevil, but I also liked the season and share some of your thoughts.

Shame about Watson, sounds like they were throwing everything at the wall, perhaps in hopes of avoiding a cancellation.

There was a network show that was renewed for two seasons in one go. The showrunner gave an interview shortly after where they said that now they know they'll another season, there is no need to end the season on a cliffhanger. Apparently cliffhangers are used to put pressure on networks. I wonder if that actually works because plenty of shows I've watched ended on cliffhangers.

Huh -- that seems like an old fashioned approach. As you said, it clearly hasn't worked many times! And these days showrunners are more likely to try and please the fans by providing an adequate close to the series.

* From - it's on MGM +, and I'm into the 4th Season. It reminds me a little of LOST, but more on the folk horror side of the fence. I like it. The characters are interesting. And I'm curious where it will go. It will end with a fifth season - and has already been renewed for a fifth and final season.

* Finished Daredevil S2 Born Again - and have mixed feelings about the ending? I wanted more catharsis and got more realism. But oh well? That said, most of the characters (except for the two leads) ended up where I needed them to be. Also, welcome surprise - Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have returned. I need to hunt down other things that the guy who played Pointdexter aka Bullseye has been in - he's an an interesting actor.

* I think I'm done with Grantchester - I've made it up to S4 Episode 2 and am kind of bored of it? It kind of jumped off the rails for me? I don't think the plot quite works into S4. Also Georgie and Sidney are getting on my nerves, and they are the main characters.

* Watched two movies: Remarkably Bright Creatures (adapted from the book of the same name) - it's on Netflix, and stars Sally Field. It's okay? But I think the book is slightly better? I didn't love the book, but I think in the attempt to tighten the book - the screen writers left some interesting developments out of the movie?

The other flick was Marty Supreme - and the comedy didn't work for me at all. I didn't find it funny, so much as cringe-inducing, painful and irritating. The film kind of pissed me off for the most part. It has a lot of irritating and obnoxious characters - but for some reason I couldn't stop watching it. Did have a satisfying ending though? The last ten minutes was kind of worth it? My favorite scene was surprisingly enough the last one. What's it about? It's based on the story of Marty Reismen, a Jewish American Ping Pong player in the 1950s, who side-hustles his way through NY underground (with mixed success) to get to go to the Ping Pong championships - with the ultimate goal of being the world's best ping-pong player, all the while - his pregnant married girlfriend is attempting to get him to take care of her.

I tried Life in Smokey Blue (a Japanese BL), but the characters and story didn't grip me. I'm likely not going to continue with that.

I picked Feel What You Feel back up instead, a Chinese BL set in the early 2000s, with two law students falling in love - and there's a secondary couple, too. The plot is very annoying, lots of typical tropes and miscommunication. The most annoying is actually how they keep telling each other that they're not gay. It's a lot of whiplash just for the sake of stringing the viewer along and making it last more episodes - or at least that's how it seemed to me. I got to ep 5 of 8 (each is an hour long, so the low number is deceiving) and might actually finish it even though I find it annoying. People lying to themselves about their feelings are my catnip, and the show has that in spades. Apparently, I can put up with a lot of other nonsense if that's part of the deal. *sigh* It's on viki.

I finished A Moment But Forever, and loved it. The ending Highlight for spoilers! *did not exactly go the way I wanted it to, but everything else was so good I found myself not caring too much. The best thing was that they ran around in their wedding robes to fight for over an episode because their wedding was interrupted by the evil demon. I hadn't seen that before, and I was tickled! The other best thing was how gorgeous the ML looked while possessed by the evil demon. Purple lipstick ftw! Gah, he was so pretty.* So: final verdict: definitely a rec. It's only on iqiyi.

Then I watched Wu Lei's Jian Lai Wrap Party, which took place in Jiande (the shooting location) last week and was organized by him and his fanclub. I watched a video of the complete event. It was too far away to see his face and the audio was terrible too, but it gave me an overview of what he did on stage, and then I pieced it together from smaller clips with better focus on his face and better audio. He did the whole thing in costume (and I love his look as Chen Ping'An), seemed to enjoy being on stage (as always), and the games were fun and not too embarrassing. At the end he kind of lost track of what he'd been meaning to say, summing up the shoot and the event, and people apparently interpreted that as him getting emotional and started telling him not to cry. <3 It was very sweet. Most of the clips I watched, I found on twitter.

I started on my quest to use the trial Disney+ subscription and got halfway through Wall-E. Yay better than nothing? I'll have to step that up if I want to actually watch a whole show before the subscription expires again (I'm lowkey planning on Andor and Ted Lasso).

I watched half of ep 2x02 of Saint Pierre, and am enjoying how comfortable the leads are with each other. I don't think they're supposed to be shipped (she has a boyfriend, he keeps running into all his exes), but I ship them anyway.

I spent the week longing for a full drop of Widow's Bay which is precisely my kind of show. Right now I'm jumpily catching up on From and looking forward to watching the season finale of Will Trent.

I did watch one episode of Margo's Got Money Troubles, I didn't know what it was about and it's a good show, but maybe not for me.

I think I'm going to watch the first ten minutes of a bunch of first episodes, hopefully something with a full season will grab my attention. I can't be in a book, tv show, and video game hangover all at once.
