I don't buy much merchandise anymore mostly because I cannot afford it.... or cannot justify the expense of buying it.

I was never much of a collector and at this point want to pare down everything I have. But there is tempting stuff out there 🙂

I did pare down much of what I had some years back when I was moving house, but there were so many things I could not bear to part with for various reasons even if they are not on show around the house.

Granted Scott & Bailey was very successful - it was broadcast in multiple European countries and got DVD releases in at least four countries.

I had a lot of Star Trek Voyager books but recently cleared them out as they were taking up a lot of space and I could get them digitally. But kept a few special ones, like the Star Trek Voyager Avalon Rising graphic novel which is kinda cool, because the Doctor goes to a planet and tells stories of the crew but they are imagined as Knights with swords etc (like camelot).
Also have some postcard books for Voyager and Stargate, signed photos from Stargate, a Voyager Janeway christmas ornament, I currently use a Doctor Who (Four - Tom Baker) keychain, and there are a few other things.
These days I find mostly that my fandoms don't end up with merch, or they predate the merch hype so there isn't much in the way of it, if there is any at all. Like, I would love some Castle (Beckett) figures and merch, but thats not going to happen lol
If money were no object I'd probably spend it on Vinyl (records) and buy some soundtracks and other albums. But they don't generally tend to get released in my country so I have to buy from overseas and the shipping makes it super expensive and not worth it (imo).
There is also a funko pop I desperately want - and don't get me wrong, funko pops are terrible for a number of reasons, but there is one - Endora from Bewitched - that I want so badly lol, but I missed out on it on release and now the price is around $100-$150 with shipping which is too much for a stupid funko pop imo :( lol

I was also thinking about the relative feast or famine with different shows and merchandise. For example, Supernatural is a huge fandom, but was already big in its early days. Yet it was after S3 when any merchandise for it really became available. I remember Creation Con made some of its own, such as calendars, because there simply weren't any for sale. Warner Bros was incredibly late in doing any merchandise for the show.
Similarly I have seen very little stuff for Merlin, even though it's a show with an enduring fandom. Some of my others like Buffy got more as it went on, and others like Trek and Star Wars are giant franchises. But as the holidays are coming up, I think of possibilities such as tree or holiday ornaments, not to mention calendars, t-shirts, posters, etc.

But just whenever I come across any of that stuff. I don't actively seek them out (with the exception of promotional meals 😋).

I think I used to buy a lot more stuff in the past than now, perhaps it's a combination of the pricing and availability, but regardless I try to keep a look out anyway, just to see. I tend to go more for discounts and clearances on things or anything that is potentially used than new because everything now is too expensive. But if I see something I'll like from a show I enjoy, I'll most likely be interested in getting it. Again, I'm a fan of trinkets and I want to be surrounded by the things that bring me joy. I do have some that I like as collectibles, but it's only for me and never to resell them. (Ex: I'm guilty of really liking Funko Pops and getting some especially from fandoms that don't have much merch to begin with, and I will always take them out of the box and put them on display in my room/house; the best way to get a good deal on Funko Pops is if you buy used ones that have their boxes damaged which lowers the price since serious collectors want the boxes in pristine condition, whereas me I don't care because I take them out regardless).
And yes, I'll also add that I'll buy the DVD/Bluray as well. Physical media is always a must.

Peter David was always great in his novelizations and novels.

So now due to practicality and my budget I stick to "useful" items that provide more insight like magazines with interviews, DVDs with special extras, books (novels/autobiographies/guides), convention recordings, video games that expand on canon, and scripts/behind-the-scenes documents when they become available. "Useful" is expanding into some promo posters/prints to display in my home and maybe some old fanzines because I love how they're little capsules of fandom history. I really adore archiving media/fandom history, so collecting magazines and such enable me to do that and make that info more accessible to other fans. :D
It just suuuucks a lot of the stuff I'm most interested in are pretty rare. For a modern show, it would be so easy to find an action figure at a local store. But for scripts from niche 90s shows, I need to be checking eBay constantlyyyyy for the 0.01% chance something shows up.

Haha, about the "useful" items list expanding! It's a great project though, digitizing stuff to make it more accessible. I'm really glad people have done that with interviews and DVD extras, for example.

I have (and regularly wear) an autographed shirts that an actor signed at a con, for example.
Other than wearables and art that I can look at in my home, I don't like to buy merchandise.

When I was 12 someone gave me a book for autographs as a birthday gift. There was an extreme shortage of celebs where I grew up and I'd no idea who I'd ever get one from. As it turned out I did get one celeb signing it. James McNichol was promoting a new album he made with his sister Kristy, and was doing a signing at a local record shop. He got a decent turnout for sure and I my first autograph 😄

Wish I could find more X-Files merch I liked.
