(I tried the audiobooks and had the same problem with the narrator's voice/delivery, and a lot of people love the audiobooks, so it might just be that I/we aren't the right audience for this.)
yeah, Im iffy about this one, but only because that is nothing like how I pictured murderbot looking.
I've only read the first four books, but haven't read the fifth because I read the others way back when they first came out and I've completely forgotten what happened. But I haven't been motivated enough to reread the series to find out.
I'm guessing they are just covering book 1 with this first season?
I was already skeptical about adaptation for these books because the interior monologue from Murderbot is so critical to them and this is something poorly done for similarly styled books. But the casting also turned me off. If they represent Murderbot as a straight white male, so much of what was unique about the character seems lost. They had other options but they clearly didn't want to take the chance on alienating potential male viewers.
Or they knew that Askars has a large and loyal fan following. Over on the MB subreddit and in Bluesky there are many comments from people who said they picked up the books/became interested in the show because they knew this was his next project.
Askars is also listed as a producer, which means: (1) he took an upfront pay cut in exchange for getting a producer's royalties (like Stephen Strait with The Expanse). (2) this is a passion project and he's backing it with his own money (3) 1+2
I'm interested, but I'm not sure the tone will land for me in a visual medium. Not even necessarily a problem with the adaptation itself, just I have a different tolerance for comedic elements in different mediums.
Skarsgard was fairly boring casting, but if they handle gender well in the show itself it'll redeem it, imo.
