Welcome to day 6 of Rec Fest! Today please recommend shows which could be considered romances. These would be shows that focus on a couple or romance theme, even if they cross into other genres

Please include in your recs the following information:

Show Title:
Audience Rating: Young Children/All Ages/Teen and Up/Mature Content
Warnings: (Could include gory content, raunchy situations, explicit sex, offensive content, etc.)
Length of Episodes: (30 minutes/1 hour/Other)
Length of Series: (Number of seasons or number of episodes)
Why you recommend it: (What draws you to it? What niche does it fill/mood is it good for?)

You can copy and paste the following code into your comment.

Feel free to include any other information you’d like, such as what year(s) the show was originally broadcast, standout cast members, or what other shows it may connect to or be like. You can also include outside links to Wikipedia, Fanlore, IMDB, your favorite review etc. which contain more show information.

If someone else has already recced a show you were planning to rec, please include your own rec as well! People have different takes on shows and it can also help people if they see a number of people find a show to be a must-watch.

If you have questions about what to post or how the Rec Fest will run, please ask them at this link, not in comments below

Bridgerton

Show Title: Bridgerton
Audience Rating: Teen/Adult
Warnings: explicit sex scenes, one dub-con scene in season 1
Length of Episodes: 1h
Length of Series: 3 series of 8 eps each so far
Why you recommend it:

I recommend it mostly because of the sex scenes. They are very female-gaze-y, and the couples are all equal and all enjoy the sex equally. I LOVED it. And that's coming from someone who doesn't usually get very invested in period dramas. Adding sex to period drama is the way to go!

I love a lot of things about the show. The romance and the sex is just one part of that - an important one, to be sure. I don't think I would have watched it if there was no sex. The writing is witty, the characters are all three-dimensional, and the music is beautiful, and the overwrought costumes (and no bonnets!) are gorgeous, most notably the wigs of Queen Charlotte. (Who also has a spin-off series that is supposedly excellent but which I haven't seen yet.)

The many complex and layered female characters are another important draw. Yes, the show (mostly) adheres conventions/tropes of romance novels, but it shows many different characters in the Regency setting, and that's interesting. I love that both couples (season 1 and season 2) are mixed-race couples. Another plus point for me is that both main couples are prime examples for their brains fighting their hearts. They keep pretending not to like each other for the longest time, and that's my catnip.

I wrote a rec post for it here.

Second Bridgerton, which also is a bit of a romantic satire, and is just plain fun. Each season is an adaptation of a separate historical romance novel by Julie Quinn. There's about six to eight novels for each of the Bridgerton siblings, including prequels for the parents, and for novels for various extended family members. So the series can go for a while - it has a lot of source material.

The adaptations swing away from the novels a bit, and feel like a modern or updated rendering in some respects. They've introduced POC characters which do not exist in the novels, and homosexual characters - also do not exist in the novels. There's a queer coupling emerging with Francesca, and they have a three-some with Benedict in S3.

The actors are excellent as is the sexual chemistry, and it has a bit of a soapy feel to it. The stories revolve around mainly the Bridgertons, with Lady Whistledown as the connector.

It's among my favorite series on Netflix. And my favorite season to date is Queen Charlotte - which is actually the spin-off, a one-shot limited series that aired between S2 and S3. Favorite Season may be S2.
