This week I finished both Dark Matter and Big Door Prize (s02). And this week's episode of Landscape Artist of the Year, and Criminal Minds Evolution.
In terms of new stuff, I watched:
1. The first episode (of 2) of Suranne Jones: Investigating Witch Trials (BBC), in which the actor is obsessed with the 17th-century witch trials that took place near her Greater Manchester home town, and is clearly moved as she follows in their footsteps to learn the wider history of witches (or rather, women). 2. the first episode of Supacell (Netflix), a sci-fi superhero show, which seems like it will be fun; 3. the first two episodes of season 1 of House of the Dragon -- as much as I loved Game of Thrones, I wasn't bothered by watching any sequels/prequels, so passed on this when it first aired. Thought I'd give it a go.
I am looking forward to starting season 2 of Colin from Accounts, now that I have all of the episodes. I just hope it is as charming and delightfully catty as season 1. And also Wimbledon (tennis) and the Euro Cup.
I'm finally watching The Bear. It's been on my list, but jumped up recently bc folks have been making such lovely icons and I wanna use em! (no, not the first time this has happened)
Only four episodes in, but great writing and I'm thoroughly enjoying the love of food.
Tomorrow is the IWTV season finale. Cannot wait for everything to be horrible to the max.
I'm watching some SG-1 (season 5) and I've just started watching Lip Service again. I got a bit nostalgic over Stargate recently for some reason, but I also wanted some TLW-era sapphic show lol. So Lip Service it is!
Watching Interview With the Vampire and VIBRATING for the next episode tomorrow! Also extremely happy with the Season 3 renewal news :D
House of the Dragon is... okay? I expected a bit more from the first two episodes. I will keep on watching because I am eagerly expecting more war crimes to be committed!
For movies, I finally got around to watching Furiosa and, while it was gorgeous, I found the plot kind of meh? The action was amazing, though.
Spent most of this week sick in bed, so my opinions are not very complex: The Boys: Pretty funny but I'm not at all invested in any of the characters.
The GOAT: The right person won!
Miss Night and Day: I wish this was a better show. :( Lee Jung-eun is a joy to watch but everything else feels like a drag. The worst thing is that Miss Night and Miss Day don't even feel like the same character anymore.
Taskmaster Australia S2: Tom and Lesser Tom might become my favorite Taskmaster/Assistant duo.
I'm looking forward to: - The Boyfriend, a Japanese gay dating show that looks really sweet. - Hereditary becoming available on Prime again. I'd love to rewatch it. - Anatomy of a Fall becoming available on Prime.
By the way: I wish more streaming services would list their upcoming releases somewhere so that you can actually get excited about them. It's the main reason why I always find new Netflix shows to watch.
Love Island USA. It is delightfully bananas this season. And on 6 times a week, so that's enough to keep me busy, but I also finished up watching the previous season of Top Chef.
Finished S3 of Slow Horses and S2 of Foundation, liked both. Also finished Dark Matter, and found its ending a cop out. Finished the latest season of All Creatures, and caught up to the latest season of Grantchester. Also watched S1 and S2 of Sister Boniface. I could see how it could grow on people but I found it useful mostly for background viewing.
I continued watching Presumed Innocent, and For All Mankind, but am an episode behind on The Acolyte. Also have been background viewing Harlow. Still on S1.
I watched various documentaries including one on Diane Von Furstenberg (seems more hagiography than anything in-depth), the PBS doc on Disco, Immediate Family, The Stones & Brian Jones, and Show Me the Picture. Of these I thought the Disco one was the most informative. Also watched a bunch of movies, none of them that memorable except for Official Secrets which I found a very interesting view of what was happening in the UK in the lead up to the second invasion of Iraq.
Slow Horses - I put off watching it for so long and then binged all three seasons in a very short time a few months ago. One of the things that really surprised me was how the theme song fit so well. Mick Jagger apparently wrote the lyrics and collaborated on the song with the person who did the music for the series. According to an article in Rolling Stone: 'For his part, Jagger then says he wrote the lyrics, "just recorded it on my iPhone, and sent it to him."
"It's quite irreverent, but the Gary Oldman character is irreverent," continues Jagger. "It's also slightly eerie, so it combines those two things. You don't want to make it too serious."'
I watched the film made of it, which I thought was pretty good. The series definitely has significant changes, starting with casting. My guess is that the film wanted to make Harrison Ford more sympathetic, so the way he was depicted, as well as the murdered colleague, are different. There are a lot of flashbacks and the lead character is definitely unsympathetic.
There's also more time spent with the family, and possibly the political angles (it's been a long time since I saw the movie so I can't be sure). I remember seeing a blurb about the series where they talked about how different things are now with DNA and that a clever change had to be made and that's made me curious. So I guess you could say my interest is mostly in seeing how a remake has changed things rather than because I'm so interested in the story itself, if that makes sense.
Yeah, I saw the film version back whenever it came out, so don't really remember much about it. The reviews mostly just call the series dull, lifeless, uninspired, etc. Those sorts of adjectives.
I rewatched The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death, the last eps in this season's Doctor Who, continued to enjoy Pointless, caught up on John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, finished the rewatch of Iwaju, and got in a couple of episodes of ST: Voyager.
I got in one more episode of Africa Rising with Afua Hirsch. This one focused on Senegal, a country I could find on a map but knew little about. I love the way she focuses not only on the history of these countries, but the current state of art, fashion, music, etc.
I finished 3 Body Problem. I liked it a lot and look forward to the next season whenever it comes out. While I was watching I kept thinking that I knew the actress who played Dr. Ye. Sure enough, it was Rosalind Chao, who I loved as Keiko O'Brien in TNG and DS9.
So, then I started watching the new season of Sweet Tooth and who shows up? Rosalind Chao, once again. It looks like Mrs. Zhang is going to be more important this season than last.
omg this week was so stressful. I think I only watched a bit of Taskmaster, and an ep of Parallel World and that was it. /o\ Better luck to me next week, I guess? :)
I got my hands on some stuff that was recced here last week and am looking forward to watching that. \o/
Finished The Bear S3 - which I adored. It's about a chef who takes over his family's failing restaurant and turns it into a high class restaurant. But heavily character focused. And on the process of running a restaurant. It's not plot centric. Also serial - so not episodic. Ten episodes per season, 30 minutes each, Hulu and F/X.
Started The Acolyte - which is okay. Just seen the first episode. But I really like the lead character and the story, so will continue. About an assassin taking out the Jedi - 100 years prior to the rise of the Empire.

Tried House of Dragon S2 - but not in the mood.
