Speak Up Saturday

Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week?

Bonus Question: What would your favorite character from that show give to a friend or significant other as a gift?

This week I FINALLY finished Black Sails and hooo boy. I'm gonna have to watch that one again. I'm so pleased that Max ended with--ah, I won't spoil it in case anyone in the comments hasn't seen yet. Very satisfied with the ending overall, which is a huge relief!

Woot! Loved Black Sails (and wish there were more icons around)

Ah, yes, Black Sails is great! From experience, it's a show that really rewards a rewatch, too.

I feel like it would! I know I probably missed a lot of stuff just trying to track the plot the first go around.

Choose Love: An interactive romance episode? Or whatever this was supposed to be. Mainly watched it for the interactivity feature. Pretty cookie-cutter, and the female lead behaved like an asshole. Why give her a boyfriend when she's supposed to choose between three guys (including the boyfriend)?

The Curse: I don't need a close-up of anybody urinating! Otherwise, I think that the reality TV angle is interesting but also nothing that hasn't been done before (see: UnREAL). Liked this episode due to its Whitney-Dougie focus and Asher's curse obsession, but the scene with Abshir was truly painful in every sense of the word.

Fermat's Cuisine: Felt like a manga adaption in a way I dislike.

HIStory3: Trapped: Skipped my way through this show after I gave up on Pit Babe. I ended up liking the only straight couple the most which should tell you everything.

Leave The World Behind: Overlong, and without a satisfying payoff. Just okay.

Pit Babe: Watched the first episode because it's an omegaverse BL. Boring and without any significant chemistry between the leads.

Taskmaster New Zealand: Two episodes, mainly for Madeleine Sami. I want to love it but it's simply not happening beyond a few laughs.

To answer the question: I don't really have a favorite character but the couple from The Curse would probably give their "friend" something well-intentioned that is completely unusable to them on an individual level. For example, a super expensive, eco-friendly cooking appliance that doesn't match the friend's individual needs or is in some other way inconvenient to anybody who isn't privileged in the same way that this couple is. Or maybe an art piece from a Native American artist only for it to turn out later that they confused the artist/the tribe it was from. Except that they already gave everybody in the room a self-important 30-minute lecture about it.

On my list: Analog Squad, Christmas Bloody Christmas, Glow Up S5, Yoh! Christmas (mainly because I enjoyed the first two seasons of How to Ruin Christmas)

I've also given up on Pit Babe. How did they make a boring omegaverse bl show?

My partner and I are still watching our way through The Man in the High Castle (nearing the end of season 3), which is good but gruelling. We also watched the first episode of Maron (Marc Maron's sitcom), but it was pretty rough. We're planning to give it another episode or two at some point. (Anyone else have opinions on this?)

In Kdramas, I'm watching Welcome to Samdal-ri, which is only coming out two episodes a week, and My Demon to fill in the gaps. (I don't care much about My Demon, but it's watchable so far, and I'm fond of the female lead actress because of Love in the Moonlight.)

I don't really have a favourite character, and I'm so bad at gift-giving myself, I don't think I can answer the question. :-)

Finished up Turn A Gundam. Really great series overall. Did not make me cry even once!

Binged Netflix's live action Yu Yu Hakusho last night. It is only 5 (?!) episodes, so the storyline was insanely rushed and none of the character beats make sense by the end. But the action scenes were well-choreographed, and I was entertained the whole time. (It was like watching a fun canon divergent fanfic 😂)

My brother also thought it would be funny to make me watch the pilot episode of Fuller House... and that's 30ish minutes of my life I'll never get back 😬

Started watching the last half of The Crown.
Also watched a little more of Wednesday, finished GBBS S11 and the holiday shows from last year.
Fast forwarded through a bunch of Murder at the End of the World (I thought it had finished but one more episode to go).
Watched the remaining episodes of S2 of Behind the Attractions.
Finished S3 of The Witcher

I had Covid last week -- well, I still have Covid this week, but am no longer testing positive -- so didn't feel much like getting into anything new, or continuing with anything that had any sort of complicated plot. In the end I ended up rewatching Ted Lasso (I had totally missed the first season reference to AFC Wrexham and its new owners the first time I watched it!!), and random syndicated things on TV, e.g. Castle, various Star Treks, etc. I did, however, binge the final half of the final series of The Crown, since that doesn't qualify as either new or complicated in my book. Then I saw a reference to The X-Files somewhere and got an urge to watch that. It doesn't seem to be streaming on anything (in Canada), so I downloaded all the seasons and started watching that.
