Speak Up Saturday

Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week? Is it an old favorite or new to you?

I finished The Winter King this week and really really enjoyed the series. As I've mentioned many times in these posts, it's based on Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles -- a more historically accurate telling of the "King" Arthur myth. If you liked The Last Kingdom (Netflix), based on a different series of his, you'll likely enjoy this as well. Of course the usual complaints -- everyone looks way too perfect and healthy for 5th-6th century Britain, but it's nice to have all the fantastical/magical elements removed. Yes there's Excalibur, but no, no one pulls it out of a stone, etc. I think it's legally on Crave in Canada, MGM+ in places where that is a thing? No clue. There will be a season 2 (yay!) and apparently Kit Harington has been cast as Lancelot. So more overly perfect, healthy people.

Also up to date with Bosch: Legacy season 2, and started season 3 of Cobra. Also watched a really interesting one-hour special (?) called The Beatles and the BBC, which likely only aired on the BBC (torrented) and really enjoyed that. Oh, and my all-time favourite guilty pleasure show started up this week: The Curse of Oak Island, season 11!! Happy dance!! And of course Welcome to Wrexham. Everyone should watch that -- it's a really lovely docu-series. Even if you're not into sports, it's not really about the football club, it's about the people and community. Sort of like a real-life Friday Night Lights (which again, if you've never watched, you really should -- it's lovely).

I don't generally rewatch things, so most of these are only "old favourites" in the sense that these are new seasons of shows that I regularly watch, not rewatches of shows I've previously watched. Only The Winter King is brand new. And that Beatles special.

Watched more Castaway Diva. Don't really enjoy the angst and couldn't care less about the Ki-ho mystery because I simply don't subscribe to the "they must be together because they were childhood friends" logic. Even if Ki-ho turns out to be the male lead I favor (which I doubt), to me, it wouldn't make his character more interesting or shippable with Mok-ha.

Took a chance on At the Moment, a Taiwanese anthology series about romances during the pandemic. It mainly caught my interest because there also seem to be two gay couples (out of ten). The first half of episode 1 didn't really wow me but I will definitely try watching other episodes that sound intriguing enough.

Curious about: Daily Dose of Sunshine (I like Park Bo-young, and it looks cute) and Mrs. Davis (which finally landed on Prime Video Germany this week).

I also rewatched Blades of Glory with two friends and, the utterly unnecessary straight romance aside, it was a ridiculous, little comedy. I wish they rebooted the premise, only this time with an in-your-face romance between the two leads.

Watched:
- The M/M episode of At the Moment. I liked it well enough but wouldn't recommend it to anybody looking to watch a cute gay romance.

- The new episode of Taskmaster. Really adore this season's contestants.

- The first episode of Mrs. Davis. I feel that I should love it for its violence and sheer absurdity but nothing in the first episode clicked for me and I don't really feel like wasting another hour on episode 2.

- Miracle Workers. Considering that I was pretty turned off by Mrs. Davis, it's almost funny that I immediately landed on another show with a religious premise. What can I say: Steve Buscemi *and* Daniel Radcliffe? Gotta give this one a chance. Pretty silly, so far, but cute enough.

I discovered that the Roku channel, of all places, is airing new seasons of The Great American Baking Show, so I'm working my way through this year's season. It's not as good as some of the others (the Australia and Canada ones are my favorites), but it's still very chill and I occasionally learn something new.

Oh interesting. I'd like to see what that's like.

It's pretty good! It's weird though that they've run for a number of seasons but they keep changing who streams it, so I think I've only ever caught a couple of them. I didn't notice if Roku has the whole backlog either.

I watched the celebrity Christmas episode Roku is promoting as Joel McHale was in it. Was most amused at Paul and Prue saying nice things about the bakes with a straight face -- it was more like an episode of Nailed It!

I thought that was really funny too! I also loved how the celebrities clapped and cheered for Prue and Paul every time they appeared. The whole dynamic between all of them was hilarious.

Haven't watched much with no new Quantum Leap this week. Just poking my nose in to see what others are watching!

Finished Deadloch, which I enjoyed tremendously for its playing with genres and its awesome female characters.

Two episodes into Double Parking, a New Zealand sitcom about a lesbian couple who both get pregnant at the same time. Like Deadloch, it stars Madelaine Sami, and it's brilliant. Just a really wonderful depiction of a relationship. (I've overcome my pregnancy DNW for it.)

Watched the first episode of All the Light We Cannot See, but it's not really working for me. (I loved the book.)

And I'm still slowly rewatching the Kdrama Still 17, about a 30-year-old woman who wakes from a 13-year coma. Very gentle and sweet. I love everyone in this bar.

Glad to hear that Double Parked is fun! I'd love to watch it for Madeleine Sami (my Deadloch fave) but, apparently, it's not (yet?) available over here. If all else fails, I'll have to look somewhere else...

Finished S2 of Loki, still watching Moonlighting S2, Welcome to Wrexham, Dancing with the Stars and now on S3 of The Americans.

Mostly though I'm really put out about the fact that YouTube TV stopped recording Daily Shows or Colbert despite it saying it's in our Library. But there are not only new episodes coming out that it's not recording but an episode we were halfway through watching disappeared.
