TV Tuesday: Like Minded Recs

There might be many reasons to try out a new show, whether the theme, particular actors or show runners, a style of writing, or the appearance of certain tropes. And it's always great to get someone started on a show you've enjoyed.

What sort of "If you like X, try Y" could you suggest to the [community profile] tv_talk community? Or has anyone in the past successfully guided you to a new show by linking it to another one?

If you like Ghostbusters try the tv series SurrealEstate! It's a goofy but endearing drama about real estate agents who specialize in selling haunted houses. Sometimes that means busting a few supernatural heads, and sometimes not! It's a SyFy show; the second season is airing there now and the first season is available on Hulu in the US.

SurrealEstate is a great show! If anyone is in Australia, Season 1 is on SBS on Demand (which is free). No sign of S2 yet, but it will come eventually (I hope).

I love Surreal Estate, but only have access to S1 for now.

The last time it happened to me, someone on Reddit recommended Banshee to people who like the recent show Warrior. I was skeptical because they're about very different things ("conman takes on identity of small-town cop to escape the mob and stay close to his ex" versus "organized crime shenanigans in 19th century San Francisco's Chinatown, plus Chinese immigrants dealing with racism"), but they're actually a pretty good fit, tonally. (Not surprising, they're by the same guy.)

Sort of an obvious one but if you love the Australian TV version of the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries based on the novels of Kerry Greenwood, you might want to try the Chinese adaptation, Miss S.

There's a chinese adaptation? Hmmm.

Here's a fan made trailer for it - of course it might contain spoilers.

It has all the charm, is visually very beautiful - Shanghai in the 1930s - and two charismatic leads backed up by a great cast.

It's also pretty easily available particularly on Max as it was partially financed by HBO Max Asia.

Thank you. That looks more interesting the the original version.

It's wild as they're both based heavily on the original novels but while I love them both they really are very different!

The review I posted to [community profile] c_ent is here if you're interested - no obligation, natch!

If you enjoyed Madelaine Sami in Our Flag Means Death, try Deadloch, an Australian show which blends a serious murder mystery with OFMD-like farce and silliness, and tons of great female characters. (At least check out the trailer.)

Uh, warnings for swearing, I guess? There's a lot of swearing. Also homophobia as a plotpoint.

Surprised more aren't talking about Deadloch. And thank you for helping me put that irksome WHO IS THIS WOMAN nag to bed. OF COURSE!!! (I always try to sort them first before resorting to googling.) She's so so good at being utterly wide open!

Deadloch is really really funny. And gets funnier the more you go along and just commit to it. Sometimes it seems that so much of modern tv is really a kind of analogy? And you kind of sort of have to just get there and then the experience becomes more. I dunno.

But yes to Deadloch!

She's a New Zealander, so I'm primed to recognise her. Her performance in Deadloch actually reminded me a lot of Taika Waititi's Blackbeard. ;-)

And gets funnier the more you go along and just commit to it.

Yes, this! It's brutally funny in so many ways.

Well, if you like Virgin River? You'll like Sullivan's Crossing on CW (Canadian Series).

If you like Great British Bake Off - the Great Pottery Throw Down is basically the same with Pottery (it's on Max or should be). Also the Great BBQ Showdown has the same set up more or less.

If you like The Expanse - you might like Foundation, although Foundation takes longer to get into and is on Apple.

It's kind of hard to do well, since there's little things that are different, which may turn someone off?

If you liked Warehouse 13 - try Surreal Estate, very similar series, except one has more of a Ghostbuster vibe.

If you liked Feel Good, you might also like Work in Progress. Both are semi-autobiographical comedies that feature queer protagonists with mental health issues. Both shows also explore the characters' gender presentation and their romantic relationships.
