Speak Up Saturday

Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week? Can you explain it badly?

I watched Stephen King's Rose Red, a 2001 miniseries which looked like it had been created at least 10 years earlier. There were some good practical effects, but even with 3 episodes the story seemed truncated, the characters poorly explored and the acting, not great for several of the characters.

Treadstone is a Bourne-verse show from 2019 that despite not being wrapped up seems unlikely to be continued. It sounded more interesting than it turned out to be. I kept getting the feeling that this was inspired by Sens8, and it certainly had a tighter storyline, but I found myself forwarding through a lot of it. Some good hand to hand combat scenes though.

I'm also watching Loki and Welcome to Wrexham S2. I saw the Chippendale's miniseries on Hulu, more interesting than I expected! I also watched the new LEGO Avengers show on Disney+ (cute, but like the movies, often too much CGI fighting), and am watching Moonlighting (on S2 now).

It's odd, I remember Moonlighting being terrible at completing a normal TV season back in the day, but I was surprised that S1 was only 6 episodes and found no explanation of why.

I continued watching Moving. Loved the two Doo-shik episodes. Hated the two Ju-won episodes because I just don't care for gangster storylines. One episode would have been enough. Two were overkill in every sense of the word.

Watched the new Taskmaster episode. Didn't feel any of the tasks except for the last one. Sam and Susan remain my unexpected, personal highlights of the season. I also really love all the Julian/Alex interactions.

Finished Glow Up S4. Watched ten minutes of Bodies before I realized that it's simply not my thing. Tried once again to get into House of Usher but I'm just not particularly interested at the moment. I'm also not sure whether I should continue watching OFMD.

Might give Strong Girl Nam-Soon a chance in the hope that it has fewer issues than the original show. Still have not looked into Evilife because, so far, I've heard nothing good. Might have a look into Castaway Diva even though all the angst in the trailer makes it look a bit messy.

Ha! I've been avoiding it because of the original show. If you try it, please report back? ;-)

Watched the first episode. I don't remember all the issues I had with the original show, but those are my problems with the first ep: Uncomfortable Mom/Dad relationship (I assume we are supposed to root for them), fatphobia directed at Nam-soon's brother without ever acknowledging that he was obviously neglected his whole life, needlessly convoluted backstory that seriously drags after an hour of nothing particularly important/entertaining/funny happening, another unnecessary crime side-plot (which is mentioned in the show summary).

The final nail in the coffin: I find the second male lead more attractive. :/

Oh dear! My main problems with the original show were the comedy domestic abuse, the absolute tonal whiplash of abductees being genuinely terrified vs cutesy fantasy romance, and how very dickish the main pairing got about their relationship once they'd got together, not caring that they made people around them uncomfortable. Oh, and the very awkward depiction of the genderqueer/trans character (though the fact that she existed at all might be progress? idk). It doesn't sound like this new series is much of an improvement, so...

Our Flag Means Death

Hi jinks on the high seas. A gay cabaret of Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me). Two very funny straight actors don leather&lace for a romcom with swords and ships and same-sex steamy kisses. Oh, and avian transmogrification.

Work has been more demanding than usual for me the past couple of weeks and that has impacted my show watching. Come the evening, I just haven't had the mental energy required to get into anything new, so it's been mostly the usual weekly drops (Wrexham, GBBO, Lower Decks, etc.), and Moonlighting. I did watch the first 2 episodes of the new season of Bosch: Legacy last weekend, however, but that was it.

Moonlighting is not quite what I remember it to be, but maybe that will change as it goes along. I didn't remember anything of the first season, and have only just started the second. What really strikes me is just how in your face it is. Most shows today are subtle, in the sense that they want to suck you in so that you forget your watching a show -- unless they opt to break the 4th wall, like they do in "Annika". Moonlighting literally screams "I'm a TV SHOW!!!!" I mean, the first ep of the 2nd season started with Shepherd and Willis as their characters doing some sort of intro to the camera and referencing "our producers" and such. I mean, what? Anyway, it's not been quite the nostalgia trip I thought it would be.

I loved Moonlighting back when it first aired, but the latter seasons get very.. weird. They do enjoy breaking the fourth wall a lot in the show though if I recall. I still ship David and Maddie though lol, but I haven't rewatched it in a long time (I own the DVDs) because I'm worried it won't stand up to my memories.

I started Loki season 2 and liked it? Which was a bit of a surprise, since I was pretty eh on the first season. But Ke Huy Quan is adorable in it, and I really enjoyed Miss Minutes the slightly deranged AI.

I started watching an older show from 2002 - The Guardian which stars Simon Baker as an attorney with a drug problem who gets assigned community service at Children's Legal Services. Its not bad so far. Very late 90s feel to it.

Also started watching Bodies on Netflix which is pretty good but a bit messy imo. It jumps around a lot due to the different eras and you really have to pay attention to make sure you don't miss something. I'm about half way through.

I tried the Fall of the House of Usher but it didn't immediately grab me. I will definitely be trying again at some point, as it might be one of those shows you need to be in the mood for I guess.

Saw the first few eps of the new season of American Horror Stories and they were pretty good although very familiar stories. I don't think there was anything new or original in them, they were all stories that have been told before in other shows or movies. But I liked this take on them, the first one "Bestie" is my fav so far.

Otherwise its mostly been the regular weekly shows, I think. Last ep of Billions which was amazing, I will miss that show. Fear the Walking Dead is back and it was fine. Doom Patrol which is great as always. A few other things but nothing stand out ish.

I'm terrible at explaining things in that bad way, but lets see...

Fear the Walking Dead (and the walking dead in general I guess):
Told from the POV of the bad guys who systematically derail every community they come across in favour of their own, this show is about the power grab after the apocalypse. A world where people primarily spend all their time fighting over control of small territories even though there are huge swathes of land literally everywhere going for $free.

How much eps did you watch for Fall of Usher?

I only did 2 but it seemed like it was going more for aesthetics and edginess than anything else.

Just the first ep. Usually thats enough for me to know, but it didn't catch my interest enough and there are plenty of other things on my to watch list so I left it for now. Its a shame because I quite like Carla Gugino and Mary McDonnell and was pretty excited to watch it before I put it on!

[personal profile] mireailles 2023-10-31 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan, so I was excited for it but it wasn't something I'd watch. The first episode was pretty good but I actively disliked the second episode and that was enough to put me off it.

I ended up watching Goosebumps(Disney) and Cabinet of Curiosities, both of which I enjoyed alot more than Usher.

That is an extremely accurate description of The Walking Dead and one of several factors in why I quit the show. I sometimes don't think TV writers understand how big the world actually is.

I finished watching season 3 of Ragnarok, which I felt was a little uneven. Probably not helped by how long after the first two seasons it had come out – I probably lost some of the connection I would have had to Magne as a protagonist otherwise. The very last bit was also highly traumatic to me, a comic book collector :p Someone else might want those!!

I also finished watching Mask Girl, which was very satisfying. It's nice to have something as completely unexpected as that show turned out.

Lessons in Chemistry, in which a chemist in early 60s USA spends more time fighting sexism than doing chemistry. (Stars Brie Larson. Really good!
Warnings: rape scene at the start of ep 2; also major character death.
)

Star Trek: Lower Decks, Krapopolis, and Our Flag Means Death. Also finished Reservation Dogs, and started the most recent season of Lupin. :-)

ETA: Also, rewatching Still 17, a Kdrama about a 17 year old who is in a traffic accident, spends 13 years in a coma, and then wakes up in a 30yo's body. It's low key, delightfully fun, and a bit poignant.
