Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I've been watching episodes of Kaiketsu Zubat, a 70s tokusatsu show. I'm little over halfway done and It's been really fun and what I've needed. Just saw a very gripping two-parter in it which I wasn't expecting since it was a first! I am curious to see if I'll be seeing more of them as I continue to watch the rest of the show.

My big problem is I have a bunch of shows on backlog that I do want to watch, and keep telling myself that I will start in on one or more of them once I finish watching whatever I am currently watching. But then a brand new show comes to my attention and I jump on that one rather than start anything from my backlog. And that's what happened this week.

Anyway, I finished watching The Woman in the Wall, which I'd mentioned last week. It took some rather unexpected turns and while a somewhat bleak subject matter, I do recommend it. The acting is great, led by Ruth Wilson, and as I said, the plot took some unexpected turns.

I watched a couple more episodes of The Winter King, but I am pacing myself with that one as it's a weekly drop and I don't want to run out of episodes. I am very much enjoying it -- a more historically accurate version of the King Arthur story based on the Warrior Chronicles series by Bernard Cornwell. If you liked the Last Kingdom, you'll probably enjoy this as well.

So yeah, I was about ready to start on a backlog show, when instead I read about Bodies (Netflix) and the Guardian gave it a really good review (which can be read here, but it might be considered spoilery by some, I suppose: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/oct/19/bodies-review-stephen-grahams-thrilling-cop-drama-leaves-you-wanting-more-and-more-and-more), so I started watching that on Thursday and have only one episode left (of 7). It's time-travel police procedural with 4 cops in four different time periods investigating the same murder and gets two thumbs up from me.

And then I found out that season 2 of Bosch: Legacy has started up, so I will probably get into that before I tackle a backlog show. There's also season 3 of Upload that's just started up. Sigh.

And of course, the weekly stuff e.g. Great British Bake Off, Transplant, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Welcome to Wrexham. Which of course all get a thumbs up -- I wouldn't watch them otherwise.

I have continued watching Moving. At the risk of sounding old: I almost considered dropping it because I really couldn't care less about Bong-seok/Hui-soo and all that teenage drama. I still like Gang-hoon but I get the feeling that, at most, he'll get an individual episode -- and nothing more. That said, I really liked the way Bong-seok confronted his mother. So far, that was his strongest character moment. Loved what they did with Frank, and it seems that I have finally, finally reached the episode in which Jo In-sung appears.

Watched the new A Good Day to Be a Dog episode and appreciated it for the dumb fluff it is. Too bad there won't be a new episode next week.

Also watched Taskmaster and Glow Up but I can't think of anything to say about either.

Yeah, the teenage drama parts were also the least relatable to me with Moving - but fear not, that part takes a backseat in the later two-thirds or half, if I remember correctly!

I'm watching Tongue Tied (2018), a comedy about people at a community college learning to speak Maori.

It stars one of the actors from Wellington Paranormal.

I watched Bodies on Netflix today and really liked it. First time in forever that I got enthused about a m/m pairing, but they're just really cute and I enjoyed them working together, and Alfred's vulnerable moments and him grappling with his repressed feelings. My favorite character was Shahara, though, and it almost feels weird to say Whiteman takes third place because I really loved him too. Only one I was so so about was Maplewood.

So, thumbs up from me, even though time travel is very hit-and-miss for me. I think the fact that it wasn't just one main time period with the rest being less important helped, and that the characters' stories were intertwined even if they didn't time-travel.

I am watching Quantum Leap and Bodies.

Bodies is excellent so far! It's really building the tension and plot well. I'll watch some more today, but don't know if I'll finish it.

My current TV watching it all time travel related!

The sequel!

I do want to rewatch some of the original when I can find the time. It is streaming anywhere, do you know?

Yup. Huh, I thought I could watch Roku stuff online without the device? Hrm, I'll have to poke at it later. Thanks!

I coulda sworn I used them to watch an obscure documentary last year! I'll have to poke at it some more!

I started watching the new season of The Great British Bake Off. So far, I like the new host, Alison, and I just really want to make that chocolate cake. I have seen that in the credits of course, but I am surprised it took this long for them to think of trying to use it as a challenge (not that I thought of it - it just seems obvious in hindsight). :D

I got my over-the-air antenna to work well enough to pick up the channel that plays a bunch of Star Trek series at night, so I've been enjoying rewatching various TNG and DS9 episodes I haven't seen in ages, and also catching some TOS episodes I've never had a chance to see before (I've only seen bits and pieces over the years)

Luckily, there have been a lot of my favorite episodes on lately. TOS's "the trouble with tribbles" is an absolute classic. TNG's "time's arrow" is fun for the cast in 19th century costumes. And DS9's "take me out to the holosuite" is baseball shenanigans at its best

I enjoy that DS9 episode a lot (and when I watched Tribbles it held up quite well). We have a tote bag with Worf's "Death to the Opposition!" on it.

That's an excellent quote for a tote bag 😁 Worf was definitely the best at trash talking the batter

Watching the new seasons of Loki and Welcome to Wrexham. Also watching Moonlighting. Just finished one true crime story, I Am the Night, and have just started the Welcome to Chippendales mini series on Hulu.

Also watched another episode of “Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory” on Disney+ -- riveting. Orcas using various techniques to hunt seals, a humpback whale interfering with the hunt, just amazing footage: https://whatsondisneyplus.com/animals-up-close-with-bertie-gregory-disney-original-features-remarkable-whale-behaviour-off-the-coast-of-antarctica/

The longest, most painful arc of One Piece so far. I'd be dealing better if the villain didn't have the most obnoxious laugh I've ever heard. (Even the SO has noted this is going on far too long.)

I've been reading the Sorcerer Hunters manga, so I'll probably watch that next.

Might also see if I have still have access to 'family' Netflix. I may someday subscribe myself, but I still have too many piles of DVDs around right now.

I've been casually rewatching Schitt's Creek episodes over the last couple weeks. I still adore David & Patrick, but don't really care about the Alexis & Ted story.

I'm also rewatching the first season of OFMD in preparation for diving into season 2. I liked the first season, but it never reached fannish levels of enjoyment.

I added Bodies to my list, but since I'm still watching Dark with all the time periods there, I'm wondering whether to go straight on to it when I finish that or find something with more different themes in between.

I ended up checking out 2 eps of The Fall of Usher House. I dropped it because it seemed to prioritize style over substance, plus there was so much random name dropping of current events and trends that it just turned me off.

Also watched Goosebumps on Disney+ and ended up loving it. I'm watching S2 of Heartstopper and the final season of Cuphead.
