Speak Up Saturday

Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week? Is there a character/person in it you would like to invite to dinner?

My TV watching this week has been rather meager as I haven't watched much in terms of new episodes or new shows. I work for a provincial legislative assembly, and the House resumed sitting this week for the first time since early June, following the end of their summer recess. That means I was much busier this week than I have been over the summer and felt really drained by the time I got home. So no mental energy for new shows or new episodes of shows, or shows that last a full hour (sans ads) and/or have complicated plots. Instead, it was a lot of comfort/low effort viewing in the evening -- Canada's Sci Fi channel airs various Star Treks on different nights between 7:00 and 9:00 or 10:00 (Mon TOS, Tues and Wed TNG, Thu and Fri Voyager), so lots of Trek. Interspersed with baseball, if the Jays weren't doing too badly.

Last weekend, however, I did watch a couple more episodes of The Winter King. I'd watched the first episode back on/around August 20 and liked it, but then sort of forgot about, then remembered it again, and got back to it. I've mentioned it before. It's an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles, which is, er, a more historically accurate retelling of a fictional story? The whole King Arthur thing. I have seen a few comments here and there from people who read the books that they've botched the adaptation, but I've not read the books, so have no opinion on that front.

Some new US networks shows are starting up, and I did watch the pilot episode of one, Irrational. Pretty meh and predictable. Not sure I'll bother with it going forward, although I may give it one or two more episodes. Maybe. And I watched this week's episodes of Welcome to Wrexham and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Oh, and the new series of The Great British Bake Off started up in the UK, so I watched that.

But yeah, nothing too demanding this week. I have a three-day weekend (Monday off for Truth and Reconciliation Day) so I may try to properly get into something that I have on my very backlogged list of things I want to watch.

I watched:

- The first episode Taskmaster S16. Reaction comment here. I hope to watch the new episode sometime this weekend. So glad it's now up on YouTube on the official TM channel.

- Gen V. Liked the first episode. Curious about where they'll go with it.

- The three first episodes of Sex Education S4. Skipped my way through the rest because I didn't think that I would enjoy watching it in its entirety. The show already lost me in the third season but I was hopeful that this one would be more to my taste. What I did like: Lots of trans representation.

- Moving. Still good. But I only watched one episode this week.

People I would invite to dinner: Jean Milburn from Sex Education because she's an interesting person and looks like Gillian Anderson. Sue Perkins, Taskmaster contestant, because she's absolutely delightful.

I haven't really been watching anything scripted - a lot of newsy crap on MSNBC, and listening to music. nothing's really grabbed my interest in a while, though I do like hearing others' reactions to what they're viewing. maybe I'll get inspired to watch something new myself soon

I just started Castlevania: Nocturne. I'm only 2 episodes in so I don't have a real opinion yet but I'm not sure if it can live up to the first series...we'll see.

I started watching Little Fires Everywhere and a 2021 English spy drama Red Election, both on Hulu. I can't say I'd want to know anyone in either show! I am interested enough in both to continue watching but I find I can only do so when exercising, because at the end of the day I just want something undemanding.

The other night we watched a nature documentary on Disney+ (can't even remember what it's called) but what amused me is that it was the 3rd separate show I'd seen focused on the same Chilean puma. Had an absolutely amazing scene of her bringing down a guanaco -- she really struggled.

Currently watching Foundation S2.

And really no. I kind of like Salvor Hardin. But no.

General Hospital - daytime soap - and again, no.

Finished Good Omens S2 - and...well, no.

Virgin River - eh, no.

NY1 - no.

So pretty much no one is being invited to dinner.

I just started a due South rewatch. I bet Fraser would be a lovely dinner companion.
