Speak Up Saturday

Welcome to the weekly roundup post!

What are you watching this week? Who do you think is the standout character/person in it and why?
rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)

I'm still rewatching Death Note!

Light Yagami, the villain protagonist, is absolutely the standout character for me. He's an awful person, but he's just so compelling.

I love watching Light come up with convoluted plans to kill people or deflect suspicion; he works so hard at murder! I love watching him give in to temptation and take unnecessary risks because of his ego. I love watching him underestimate other people because he's so convinced of his own superiority.

I constantly want to pick Light apart and analyse him. I think he's fascinating.

Watching the latest season of Sex Education (only watched one episode so far). I'm really curious and excited for Meave's journey, she's so smart and seems to finally have the chance to express that, and to go places - and I'm anxious to see how it all plays out this season.

Ohh! There's lots more to come with Maeve's story. Her journey and character is really a high point of the series for me - hope it gets wrapped up in a satisfying way.

I'm about halfway through Girly Air Force and I love the concept of the Anima/Daughters. Gripen is probably my favorite, of course. She's both Other and completely relatable.

I love the whole pilot-is-the-plane concept. Visually and musically, it also really reminded me of Macross Frontier and I was not surprised to see it's done by the same studio.

Watched the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries! Loved it. It was faithful to the source material, perfectly placed, and oh so funny.

Thinking about starting Blake's 7 now...

I've mostly indulged in one of my guilty pleasure shows, The Traitors. I don't generally watch competition-type shows, other than GBBO, but I checked out the UK The Traitors last year and just fucking adored it. Then found the first season of the Aussie version and loved that. The only one I've not watched is the US one, because rather than cast ordinary people as the competitors, half the cast were "stars" from other reality shows (Big Brother, etc.) and that put me off. Anyway, I discovered last weekend that there'd been a 2nd Aussie edition so I downloaded that and binged it. Then I discovered there was also a New Zealand edition and I'm going through that one. There's a Canadian version that will be starting next month, which I will check out. I have my doubts about the Canadian version -- we have tendency to over-nice things when we adapt a game show/reality show -- at least the few that I've seen. The Canadian version of The Amazing Race seems much less cut-throat than what I've seen of the American version, for example. And even the Canadian version of GBBO -- it's so effin' sacharine, it's almost off-putting. The Traitors needs an edge to it. Also, seven of the 20 competitors are "known" -- from other competitions shows (Survivor, Big Brother etc.) but I know only 2 of them because I don't watch those other shows ever.

The casting for the next edition of the US The Traitors was also announced and I am definitely NOT watching it -- they've done way with ordinary people completely and all of the competitors are "celebrities" of some sort. Meh.

Can't really say anything about stand-out characters when it comes to The Traitors without it being a total spoiler.

Other than that, some baseball, tennis (Laver Cup) and this week's episodes of Welcome to Wrexham and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Oh! and managed to get my husband to sit down to watch the second episode of season 2 of Foundation, so at this rate, we might finish it by Xmas!

violateraindrop: (John Wick)

I watched the John Wick movies (4 for the first time) Thursday/Friday not even realizing that The Continental would release its first episode. I guess I'm prepared now lol

Other than that, I'm only watching Only Murder in the Building at the moment. Steve Martin's comedic timing is fantastic. Even though I often think that Oliver is the standout character, it makes Charles much more interesting. Not the biggest fan of Mabel this season, even though I like Selena's performance.

I haven't gotten around to starting Ahsoka and want to re-watch Our Flag Means Death before the new season starts...

Yes, this latest episode definitely supports what you said about Martin, although I agree about Oliver.

I started watching:

- Moving. Definitely getting the hype now. While I'm not really into the teen drama angle, the show universe seems pretty interesting after only two episodes. I'm sure this could be one of the best K-dramas of 2023. My personal standout, so far, is Lee Gang-hoon because he seems to be just my type: Studious, principled, with an edge, and, possibly, hiding a dark secret. I'm also intrigued by Bong-seok's mother even though I heavily disliked some of her parenting choices in the last episode. Can't wait to learn more about her backstory.

- Cook at all Costs. I like the concept but I've got several complaints that could all be solved with about 15 minutes of more screen time per episode: 1. The show does a poor job of introducing the viewer to the chef judges and their culinary vision. I would care more about the competition as a whole if I knew more about them. Would also prefer more than one chef per episode. 2. Not enough focus on the cooking process and the individual contestants' personal approach. Instead, the contestants are largely characterized by their dealing with money. 3. I wish the chef judges would give detailed reasons why they chose a specific dish as the winner. If they thought that two dishes were cleverly done, what set the winning dish apart?

Standout: Mainly the dishes that seemed edible cooked from surprise box ingredients.

Still have to watch: The Taskmaster S 16 premiere. This week was super busy and I only watched the two shows listed above because I was able to read the captions while doing my daily exercise.

Oh, hey, I also just finished binging Moving and got super duper invested in the parents. The show really seems to be into them too, since the latter half was basically about them.

I've only read good things about the parents' storyline. Really looking forward to seeing Jo In-sung as well.

Jo In-sung was my favourite part, so I'd say you're right to look forward to his appearance!

Was too lazy to leave my bed before 7 am, so I spontaneously started the new Sex Education season. Pretty sad that some of my favorite characters won't be returning but, at least, it was a delightful surprise to see one familiar face that I wasn't expecting back. The soundtrack seems great as always (I hadn't realized how much I missed Ezra Furman's voice) and I hope they follow up on some of the things that were teased in the first episode. So far, I really hope that things will pay off story-wise for Eric, Vivienne, and Aimee. Those three, along with Surprise Character, are the people I'm currently rooting for the most. Technically, Adam too. But there wasn't that much of him in the first episode.

Oh, and I also loved seeing a new cast addition I hadn't read about before. Would love to see more of them in future episodes.

Finished up What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 and ended up forgiving it for the majority of its erm season because of the glorious two-part finale. Bravo! Now I'm in deep longing for more Nandor!!! Season 6 is a done deal!

Got caught up on Welcome to Wrexham and am now sorry I have to wait each week for a new one!

Tried out High Fidelity which a lot of critics really supported. I never watched the movie because it just seemed to be one of those slacker stories I could never get into. Unfortunately after 4 episodes the series seems to be less about music than about relationship issues which I am never a fan of.

(Also, just can't get into a show where the character is apparently so independently wealthy that they can own a store they never seem to do any actual work in, and which seems to never sell things).
