I went directly from watching a Mission: Impossible movie to watching the first episode of season 3. M:I is a bunch of people taking a silly plot very seriously. OMitB is a bunch of people being very silly in aid of a serious plot. Mental whiplash!
This season reminds me of the time in my life when I really hoped there could ever be a Charles Paris Mystery miniseries. Really hoping that we'll get a gigantic BTS mess and opportunistic backstabbing galore.
Liked the Fosse bit. So far I have to say I quite like what they're doing with this season -- especially Mabel's desire to resume the podcast. Even though in the first season they were all somewhat at loose ends, I feel like so far this season in particular we get the difference between people who have lived lives and Mabel who has so far been directionless in hers (even if it's been fairly eventful).
Watched the episode at work during my break. Wasn't really for me, so if you only want to read positive opinions, please skip this comment.
Laughs:
- "Mem". - "But another female killer? That's so done." - "Hey, thankie for a hankie." - Charles's completely unsubtle hankie hunt. - "Mama was a smoker." - Loretta's limping dermatologist mother with a backstory. - Grey's New Orleans Family Burn Unit. - "Are you on Xanax?" - "No. Why, do you have some?"
Things that weren't for me:
- The splitting of the trio: I only really enjoyed Charles and the cast because it was so super silly. Don't feel the Oliver/Loretta chemistry and I side-eye the possibility that they might set Mabel up with Tobert. We don't need another Mabel romance that leads nowhere and is done and forgotten as soon as the next season starts. That said, one of my favorite moments was definitely Mabel "replacing" Oliver by criticizing Charles.
- The entire musical stuff. 1) I thought it was weird to look for something with a heart in a murder mystery musical. That's why the first song made way more sense for me as a showstopper than the lullaby despite Loretta's stellar performance. However, I wish we knew more about the plot in general. Maybe with the rehearsals? Kudos if there's a good reason why it's still a bit mysterious. 2) Too much musical, not enough murder podcast planning. At this point, I'd even take Cinda Canning making a reappearance and getting a jump on the investigation in order to get our trio back to work.
- I really don't care much about any of the new characters. But maybe that's because I'm a bit bitter about the Dimases. That said: Here's hoping that Ben's brother and the producer duo might become more important in the upcoming episodes because I don't think that I will really change my mind about Loretta and Tobert. (Unless they do a freaky Loretta/Ben reveal. In that case, obviously, I'm Team Loretta.)
Crack theory: Ben had an affair with Donna (mom producer) and her son killed him out of jealousy.
Haha! Pretty sure Ben/Kimber is a total red herring, so I hope they'll whack us over the head with a super ridiculous Ben pairing. Plus, no way they introduced the incest vibes running gag without it having at least some relevance to the plot.
This being the son's first play constitutes his steps towards establishing himself and his creative identity. What if Donna used this life-changing opportunity for him to get herself her next Boy to support because she's losing hold of the old one? That might also explain why Ben's brother managed to team up so quickly with Loretta. Maybe Ben was about to drop him anyway because he'd found himself a wealthy patron?
Given where the season has been going so far, I'm hoping that rather than yet another "love interest is the murderer" storyline we have someone unexpected like the doorman.
The parallels between Loretta, the conversation in the bathroom, and the nanny's song were a bit much for my taste. It was far too obvious that she would sacrifice herself.
Steve Martin's comedic timing was great as always.

Now that I'm caught up, this is actually the first time I have to wait for the rest of the episodes. I watched S1 and 2 when they were already over...
