Comedy

Do you smile when someone mentions The Big Bang Theory? Do you have fond memories of Friends? Can you quote Seinfeld? Do you think Barney Stinson has style? Do you have a slight crush on Leslie Knope?
Basically, is comedy TV your jam?

Happy Father's Day!
- What is your favorite currently airing comedy?
I don't actually watch that many comedies these days, but will go with Veep because it's filmed near me and I've watched the episodes a friend is in (as an extra)
- What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy?
I'm looking forward to seeing what others think as I may be in the market.

That would be Brooklyn 99
- Favorite canceled comedy?
Better Off Ted. I actually loved Community but I feel like it got a chance to have its run, which was sadly not the case for BOT.
- What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy?
For me what makes something very bingeable is cliffhangers, the urge to see how a storyline is going to unspool. But most comedies are very self contained. Even ones, like Community, B99 or BOT which do have forward progress and a good deal of character development tend to have more one-shot storytelling, or seasonal arcs that aren't that crucial. I will say that B99 has really had some major season ending cliffhangers though.
- What do you like best about comedies?
That they be funny -- which is, of course, a very personal thing as to what counts as good humor or really irresistible humor. Fact is, I don't tend to watch many comedies and particularly few through all of their seasons. Even when they're well written I just don't find them as engaging, I don't know why. And I definitely bore quickly of family centered comedies. I prefer workplace or professional oriented comedies. I find it easier to say what I don't like about comedies than what I do.
Of course, it also depends if one considers work like The Daily Show and Full Frontal to be comedy shows. I actually don't even though I'm sure their stars and staff would say they are. And I think John Oliver's This Week is even harder to quantify that way. I consider them satirical news shows, frankly.

I'll share a great fanvid for Better Off Ted. I so miss Lem and Phil -- https://thingswithwings.dreamwidth.org/113580.html

B99 needs to stop with the cliffhangers - too stressful for me

- Favorite canceled comedy? Um. . . Parks & Rec maybe?
- What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy? Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Parks & Rec
- What do you like best about comedies? I'm really not big on sitcoms. I liked comedy movies, but usually TV comedy just isn't funny to me. So I guess the thing I like best about comedy is when I actually laugh.

*draws circle around Ron Swanson* Nearly everything he says/does. Also, Peralta on BNN going coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool always makes me laugh.

Brooklyn 99 for sure. I also like Fresh of the boat, although i'm behind and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
- Favorite canceled comedy?
Probably Parks and Rec, however up until the end of the show, HIMYM was really good as well. When i was younger, definitely the Nanny :)
- What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy?
Any of the above really, but also Bob's burgers is amazing as well.
- What do you like best about comedies?
I just like the feel-good nature, really. Not having to think too hard and getting a bit of a laugh.

I grew up with ALF and he was a role model of mine (haha) and I STILL laugh at the jokes. I've seen the episodes a ZILLION times and yet it's still funny. I don't know why. lol

What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy?
ALF or Blunt Talk!
What do you like best about comedies?
I'm not big on comedies but the ones I do like just have a weird kind of humor that I appreciate.

- What is your favorite currently airing comedy?
At the moment, Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Good Place.
- Favorite canceled comedy?
I really liked Happy Endings (mostly because of Max, who was my favourite character) and the one-series show Go On, which didn't make as much of John Cho as it could have.
I'd also like to say something about two UK shows: Spaced and Black Books, which overlap slightly because Simon Pegg appeared as a slightly-obsessive bookshop manager in the latter. Both are excellent and well worth checking out if you don't already know them!
- What do you think would be the most binge-watchable comedy?
I can happily watch Brooklyn Nine Nine repeatedly and actually rewatched about 6 episodes from season 2 last weekend, but in terms of other shows then Black Books or Spaced.
- What do you like best about comedies?
I don't like comedy that relies on embarrassment but prefer stuff where work is done to develop the characters and their relationship, so comedy can come from that.

My favorite currently airing comedy is The Good Place. It's well-acted, well-written, funny, and profound. For me, a good comedy needs to have characters I can care about. Also, unless there is some drama in the mix, there are no character arcs, and there is nothing at stake. I can't care about stagnant characters. You could easily binge-watch it--there are only 13 episodes. We're actually re-watching The Good Place right now, On Demand.
I also love Brooklyn Nine-Nine but I'm a full season behind because we've been watching it through the library and all they have are seasons one, two, and three.
My favorite comedy of all time was/is I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball is a comic genius in the same league as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, YMMV. I suppose some of the scripts would fail by current standards on race, sex, etc., but they still make me laugh.
Here is a clip from a classic I Love Lucy skit. I can't get it to embed so you'll have to watch it at YouTube.
Stay Tuned: TV's Unforgettable Moments - I Love Lucy "The Vitameatavegamin Episode" (1951).
