Blue Bloods 4x01 Discussion Post

Blue Bloods is back! And with a new lead in.

I'm not going to get around to watching the episode until tonight, but I at least wanted to get this up.

Spoilers to be found in the comments.

I'll just copy/paste from my own post. Spoilers, yo!

***

I know it's all pretend anyway. And I know the majority of people on TV have to be attractive to some extent otherwise no one will want to watch them week after week. (I don't actually agree with that, but it is what it is,and it's just gotten so much worse in the past 10 years or so. After all, Andy Sipowicz would never have made Playgirl. But there was no question as to who the real star of that show was, and we all - men and women alike - ADORED him!)

But do all female cops portrayed on TV these days have to look like 20-something Victoria's Secret models? Really? I mean, I'm not even buying it for fiction's sake anymore!

So Jamie's got a new partner. (The aforementioned VC model.) Will they be in bed by the end of the ep?

I love how this show always tries to personalize each officer, even if they're only on screen a short time.

Oh, Danny! You know I love you and I do try to stick up for you. But dude, coaching an old lady to identify the guy that you want? And when it's clear to anyone that she really has no clue? Worse, then you go yelling at Erin when she calls you on this when she's doing her job PROPERLY, as YOU should be doing yours, and when you KNOW she's right that this is not enough to make a case!

And then the low blow that she's doing this for her record?! Come on, you know she did not deserve that. You're lucky she didn't slap you. I sure wanted to.

Oh, Dad. How rotten it must be to be put in a spot where you have to give a scumbag criminal police protection, just so nothing happens to him before they can get enough to bring him in and charge him! It makes sense and it probably has to be done. But can you imagine how it must feel for the poor suckers who draw that assignment?

And of course, the poor sucker is the PC's son. How'd I not see that one coming? Again, I actually agree with Dad that it has to be done and Jamie's the best to do it. But poor Jamie for having to do it.

Poor Erin. She's right in that they can't charge someone without evidence. But it's so hard, when you know the person is very likely guilty and when you know HE knows it and is going to shove it in your face and gloat about it! These lifetime criminals come to know the law as well as (or better than) the cops and lawyers themselves.

She's a moral woman in an immoral world. And that's why I never got into the legal or police field. I knew I'd never be able to make these sorts of decisions. Or rather, I'd be forced to make them, but would I be able to live with them?

So another guy that was in on the shooting (I think?) is almost caught, but when he's surrounded he puts his hand on his gun and of course the cops shoot him dead before he can spit out a name they need. Ugh!

Aw, poor Erin! Sheesh, she really is just doing her job! You can't charge people out of "loyalty" to your side, even when your side is right. If anything, they should be crabbing at Danny for pushing that poor old lady into identifying the guy when it was CLEAR to him and anyone who saw it that she was not sure at all! Erin's right, they can't put her on the stand. Not only will she be useless to the case, but just on the human level I'm sure it would be too much for the old woman.

Oh, come on! Now cops are refusing to testify on other cases until Erin charges this guy?! Explain to me how two wrongs are going to make a right in this situation?

Aw, see? Dad puts a stop to that crap. I love him so. He really does try to do what's right. Most of the time.

OH, NOW I TAKE IT BACK!
Dad: to Erin: You and I both know your brother can go too far. But he's doing everything he can possibly do to get justice here.
*beat*
Are you?

WHAT?! What does he mean? Does he actually WANT her to charge this guy with no evidence?! It's not even like it's up to her alone! Or maybe he wants her to work harder at finding something else to get him on? (I'm not sure the finer points of the law on this. My legal training comes from watching cops on TV!)

Oh, no. Bro and sis playing Bad Cop/Guardian Angel? So... Danny lies to the guy by saying the other guy gave him up before he died? (He did no such thing. He died before saying anything.) And now Erin offers him a pretend deal, if he confesses? Wow. Not sure this is very ethical/moral either. Talk about a fine line. ETA: Oh! It was part of the game! Still not sure it was moral/ethical, what they just did.

Side note: I'm bad at this stuff but even I knew it was a game for most of it. When Danny and Erin were play acting, you could tell. (As opposed to when the actors are just playing their roles. Well done!)

Ha! Jerk is tricked into confessing. Bye bye.

Well, as usual, this wrapped up a little too neatly. But you know what? I need that. There's so little of justice and neat endings in real life.
