I think that's exactly how I feel about marathoning vs. watching along -- it's a matter of whether I'm fannish or not. The sad thing is finding something to be fannish about when it's already done and gone and you're marathoning in thinking OMG WHERE IS THE FIC and crickets are chirping on the internet.
I can marathon most cop shows though, as I tend to enjoy yet not get very fannish or only mildly fannish.

Crickets chirping after you've fallen in fannish, fic-seeking love is one of the saddest things ever. Been there, done that, and I still have the AO3 tag feeds set up to prove it.

Speaking of, your icon! I gobbled up all of Life in one weekend and then furiously poked the internet in the hope of lots of fic falling out. Such cruel betrayal. :(

I marathoned Life as fast as I could, and I was so disappointed to discover how tiny the fandom and how little fic there was. It's on my Yuletide list for this year.

I hate cop shows (the procedurals), for me it's sitcoms. I tend to marathon Community and Suburgatory and the like. It's stuff that can run in a small window while I poke around the net.
