Hello [community profile] tv_talk!

This is your weekly opportunity to chat about non-current TV. Anything goes! Please stop by and tell us what you're watching, what you've been thinking of checking out, etc. Closed canons or something currently airing that you're just behind on -- it's all good. :)

Some possible things you can talk about:

- Have you recently discovered new-for-you shows through online streaming services (like Netflix, Redbox or Amazon Prime)?
- What beloved shows are you re-watching?
- What shows make you feel nostalgic and wish you had someone to talk to about?
- 'Should I watch X or Y?' --- ask the community at large if you should check something out

While we're talking about older shows, here's an interesting article on binge watching.
- Do you binge watch?

'Watch-Along: Show of the Month'
This community had a watch-along a while back for Veronica Mars & Firefly.
I'd like to return to that idea with these Saturday posts, but with a small twist. I'm going to recommend we choose a closed canon show ('Watch-Along Show of the Month'*) and have a dedicated thread in the Saturday posts to chat about that show.

*I realize that some shows are several seasons long and it's not likely that everyone would watch every episode in the space of a month, but for conversational purposes folks might cherry pick and/or coordinate a scheduled watch-along with other members for a favorite episodes, etc. Keeping the time period at one month should allow enough time to discuss and also allow more shows to get some screen time.

So think about if you'd like to re-watch something or mainline something new-for-you and nominate some closed canon shows. Largest number of people nominating a show in the nominations thread below will be our show for August.

Friday Night Lights: because people I respect loved it I'd love to give this another go. I have season one on DVD and quit after two episodes...

thirtysomething: another, even smaller Yuletide fandom. Sigh. It was a great show but my husband won't watch it again. He says it got too depressing. But it has five wonderful, complex female characters! And I loved it so much.

China Beach: because apparently I like really old shows with great female characters that are eligible for Yuletide.

The X-Files!: SCULLY! I know, nine seasons and two movies but I am always up for rewatching selected episodes.

Farscape: A great show, and another one my husband refuses to rewatch (yep, 'cause it's too depressing!). So I know I have this on DVD...somewhere...

Buffy: No. I don't own it, won't buy it, can't stream it and won't *ahem* it.

BSG: No. I don't think I can yet. I loved it so much I bought and gave away DVDs of the first season to try to get people to watch it with me. About the time it got an actual fandom, I rage-quit (great word!) it.

Is amazon prime worth it? What's it got that netflix doesn't have? I only have netflix.

Yeah, my friend added me to her prime account *cough*sayingi'mhersister*cough* so I get free shipping but that's it. I think I'll be okay without the streaming, LOL.

You don't HAVE to dig up your season 4 files. You just asked if there was anything we're rewatching at the moment, LOL.

I watched 1x08 and 1x09 with Jodie last night and OMGGG NATHAN AND HIS WOOBIE FAAACE!!!

I keep meaning to check out Leverage. Heist stuff is so fun and it just sounds like a really enjoyable show. But I have Christian Kane hangups because I couldn't stand his character on Angel, lol. I'll have to get over it. :D

As is often the case, I'm rewatching Buffy with my partner. In mid-season 6. I always have room for Buffy feels.

I discovered Xena in the last couple of years and always want to find people to talk with about it. I know a lot of people who have watched Xena but most don't remember it well!

My main current show is Orphan Black. I love, well, everyone, but especially Sarah and Felix and Mrs. S. And Orange is The New Black! <3 <3
frayadjacent: Close up of late-season Gabrielle in black & white (Xena: Gabrielle)

[personal profile] frayadjacent 2014-07-27 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there is still active Xena fandom but I'm not really drawn to it, so I just hang out in my DW corner and make vids and post about it very, very infrequently. :) I do want to write up something about my latest Xena vid that maybe would make sense to people who watched the show 10+ years ago? I have so many thoughts on Gabrielle's arc.

The trouble with Xena is that -- even for me, a pretty devoted new fan -- there are a lot of skippable episodes. But I would love to chat about it with people who are re-watching, so if you do ever do a re-watch on tv_talk I'll be delighted. :D

Ah, Buffy and OB are two of my favorite shows! I think I've rewatched all of Buffy at LEAST a dozen times -- I just pull it up on the laptop and let it play while I'm working on the desktop computer. I am always up for discussing Buffy. (By the way -- I don't know how you feel about AtS, but I watch Season 5 of that sometimes following Buffy 7.)

I'm the OB captain, so if you ever want to discuss any of S1 or S2, hop on over there!

Awesome, and I will go check out the OB threads! It's been a while since I looked -- May and June were not DW-friendly months, so I lost track of the tvtalk discussions. :D

I like AtS too! S5 is fun, and I love the final run of episodes a lot. And I really love Gunn's character arc that season.

I've been catching up on The Originals and Parenthood lately and slowly working my way through the first season of Grimm.

Earlier in the summer I worked my way through both seasons of Nashville in about 2 weeks, caught up on The Vampire Diaries, Glee and Reign.

I binge watch some things and others I don't. Obviously those 2 seasons of Nashville were a total binge watch, and I binge watched Orange is the New Black when it came out, but I've been going slower with things like The Originals and Grimm. It depends on the show and it depends on my current mood.

[personal profile] lostdragonfound 2014-07-27 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've only watched through the fifth episode of the first season so far. I'm watching on DVDs through Netflix and that seems to go more slowly than streaming for me for some reason. I'm liking it so far though.

I loved Wonderfalls, but I haven't seen it in so long...I do have it on DVD though. I loved Rome but it's been a while since I watched that as well :)

So much good TV and never enough time ;)

I think highly serialized = good binge watching, Monster or Case of the Week = not so good binge watching.

But NCIS makes for awesome binge watching and that's case of the week. Law & Order too.

I do binge watch but it depends on the length of the show and what kind of genre it is. For example, I'm currently re-re-watching S1 of Sailor Moon (on iTunes). Since each ep is about 18 minutes long (the credits run for about 2 minutes and the post-episode credits run for about 4), I can watch several eps in the space of one hour. Usagi, however, tends to scream a lot so I don't sit through, like, 10 eps in a row.

The last big show I seriously binge-watched was Scandal right before last season began. My boss and many of my co-workers are huge fans and they recced it to me all the time. As it happened, it began streaming on Netflix and I ended up spending a whole weekend watching the first 2 seasons. It was intense.

Because of how accessible digital is for me, I've mellowed out a lot in regards to watching shows as they air live. This means, of course, that my to-watch list is rather lengthy: Orphan Black, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Defiance, The Leftovers, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries (S5).

I might eventually add Leverage, Longmire, and Justified to that list. They all look like shows that might ping me. Yet, at the same time, all of them are on the verge of being over-hyped to me? Well, OK, maybe not Longmire. But many people both on and offline have been super-effusive in their reasons why I should check those shows out.

Well, considering I don't have cable, I'm all for having shows online. "Back in the day" (about 5 - 7 years ago), I'd rent the DVDs from Netflix. #oldschool

It's very rare that a non-awards ceremony be available digitally somewhere. After all, outside of streaming (and other things *cough, cough*), a lot of TV networks do have, at least, the latest 5 episodes available online.

I do like the fact that we have a choice to either watch things now or wait until another time. What I do find interesting that marathoning shows (binge watching) has become a lot more prevalent in the past few years.
