The Expanse - PRIMER
In the 23rd century, humans have colonized the solar system.
The U.N. controls earth.
Mars is an independent military power.
The inner planets depend on the resources of the asteroid belt.
Belters live and work in space.
In the Belt, air and water are more precious than gold.
For decades, tensions have been rising - Earth, Mars and the Belt are now on the brink of war.
All it will take is a single spark …

THE SHOW
Two events link the lives of Belter cop Joe Miller, accidental ship captain James Holden and U.N. politician Chrisjen Avasarala. The disappearance of the estranged daughter of a prominent businessman, Julie Mao, and destruction of a commercial ice hauler. Are they related? You betcha. Set amidst escalating tensions between Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt, these three people unravel a vast conspiracy that threatens all humanity.
The show is based on the The Expanse series novels written by by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (writing under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey)
The pilot episode opens like this....
"We begin, rather ominously, with a young woman, floating in tight metal quarters in zero gravity. We hear the sounds of some sort of commotion from outside her room, then silence.
She calls for help. She can't get out. She checks her water supply … two precious drops float in front of her face, as if mocking her. She guides them to her lips and swallows.
Finally, she manages to break free of the room, donning a space suit labeled with the name JULIE and the word SCOPULI. She puts on magnetic boots that allow her to move about in the gravity-less environment. As we will soon learn, this woman's name is Julie Mao."
THE CHARACTERS

James "Jim" Holden, Earther, executive officer of Canterbury and then captain of the Rocinante
Jim is from Earth and the only child of 8 people in Montana. He left home for a career in the UN Navy, where he was discharged for assaulting a superior officer. When the series begins, he’s the reluctant executive officer of the Canterbury, an ice hauler. Jim tries to do the right thing, sometimes at the expense of good sense.

Chrisjen Avasarala, Earther, UN Assistant Undersecretary of Executive Administration
Formidable and potentially ruthless, Chrisjen is quite possibly a bigger badass than anyone wielding a gun on this show. Her aim is to prevent a war, especially a war brought about under false pretenses. She smells bullshit on what’s going on and goddamnit she’s going to get to the bottom of it. If you cross her, you’ll find yourself turning tricks in a trailer on the side of the highway.

Josephus "Joe" Aloisus Miller, Belter, detective on Ceres assigned to find Julie Mao
Miller is a cynical, wash-up ‘cop’, who has was assigned the job of returning a wayward rich girl home to her father. As Miller investigates Julie Mao’s disappearance, he starts climbing out from rock bottom and begins to once again give a shit about doing the right thing.

Naomi Nagata, Belter, engineer of the Canterbury and then of the Rocinante
Naomi is a Belter and probably way too smart to be an engineer on an ice hauler, but here she is. She has some history with the OPA and feels sympathy for the plight of the Belters. She is a compass for Amos, and sometimes Jim.

Alex Kamal, Martian, pilot of the Canterbury and then of the Rocinante
Alex is a Martian cowboy with a slow southern drawl who absolutely adores flying the Rocinante. He served in the Martian Navy and has a family on Mars that he doesn’t speak of.

Amos Burton, Earther, mechanic of the Canterbury and then of the Rocinante
Amos is an Earther from Baltimore who grew up amongst sex workers and prostitution. He’s comfortable with violence and seems to lack a certain social intelligence. It’s unclear if he has sociopathic tendencies or PTSD, but his presence as “muscle” can both frighten and reassure his crewmates.

OTHER NOTABLE CHARACTERS:
Juliette "Julie" Andromeda Mao, Earther, the missing daughter of business tycoon Jules-Pierre Mao
Frederick "Fred" Lucius Johnson, Earther-Belter, former UN Marine colonel-turned-leader of the OPA who runs Tycho Station
Roberta "Bobbie" Draper, Martian, Marine gunnery sergeant
Praxidike "Prax" Meng, Belter, a botanist from Ganymede

THE EPISODES
Season 1 had 10 episodes and originally aired in November 2015
Season 2 has 13 episodes and originally aired February 2017
Season 3 is currently filming and is schedule to air sometime in 2018
It's available on Amazon & iTunes and some episodes are streaming on syfy.com. I know some fellow fans have had success in obtaining DVD’s from their local library.
If it sounds like there’s a lot going on, there is. This is one of those shows that I feel has a great payoff for the investment in that it’s worth letting the show runners tell the story.Unlike a nameless big epic space opera of the past, they actually have a plan (for real, they already have books!)
The pacing of the episodes is really good and there’s an incredible amount of nuance that makes this show so rich and very re-watchable.
We recently rewatched season 1 and have just started season 2 @
rocinante. We watch 1 episode per week. Please join us!

I had so much success that I bought season two.
It's a great series. I can't wait for season three.
I can't comment on the Amos meta: I quit reading at the words, "We know from the books..." because some of us do know and some of us are still avoiding spoilers.
Naomi is still my favorite character, although she's not exactly who she represented herself as to the crew of the Rocinante, especially not to Holden.

I hear Naomi has some backstory that's explored in later books (that I haven't gotten to yet either) and am looking forward to learning about. From the show, you just KNOW she's got some fascinating tale.

I accidentally got spoiled for one of the books--book three or four I think it was--and if the TV series goes down that same road, I'm so done here. I hated that spoiler with the fire of a thousand suns.
