TV Tuesdays: Who Are Your Pirates?
In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, a few questions!
a) Are you fond of pirates or stories involving them?
b) Do you have any favorite piratical characters?
c) Do you have any shows to recommend for pirate related viewing?
For the sake of our discussion, let's use a broad definition of "pirate" and involve characters who may not say "Arrr!" or ascribe to the label.

However I do have some favorite pirate characters. For one thing, I love the show Black Sails which deals with the real thing as well as fictional characters. Flint kept me watching from the first episodes because I have a competence kink and he's a great planner. Also, what a painful backstory! Courage and smarts all the way, although those smarts can fail him when his heart's involved. I will say nothing further because anyone who wants to watch that show should get to discover things on their own. But there's lots of great characters to choose from.
Also, I am fond of Hondo Ohnaka in Star Wars. A character introduced in Clone Wars who goes on to appear in many a story, I think his arc is summed up in his final appearance (so far) in Star Wars Rebels. When I discovered a few years ago that he appears at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge I was delighted that the character gets that sort of prominence. Fun to watch, but deeper than he at first seems.

A long time ago, I shipped Sparrington which is probably the most excitement I've felt over any pirate content ever. I also remember liking Hook when they introduced him in OUAT, mostly because his eyeliner made him look effortlessly sexy. Watched the first season of Black Sails but despised the Max storyline so much that I never felt the urge to continue despite all the enormous praise. Liked OMFD but I lack the passion for it that I've seen in other fans -- maybe because my personal #1 David Jenkins TV show is and always will be People of Earth. That said, if I had to recommend one pirate show, it would be this one.
Always wanted to watch Crossbones for John Malkovich. However, it never managed to climb particularly high on my to-watch list because I heard that it was mediocre.
Movie-wise: Enjoyed Muppets Treasure Island. I also think that Alan Rickman delivered a terrific Hook in An Awfully Big Adventure. Liked Cutthroat Island as a kid but don't ask me why. (I assume I simply thought that Geena Davis looked BAMF-y in her costume.)

One of my go-to pirate recommendations is the Captain Harlock series! Specifically the movie Arcadia of My Youth, which I feel is a fantastic starting point for new people. It's great space opera and gives you a good taste of what to expect from the series. I also really enjoyed it's sequel anime Endless Orbit SSX and the original 1978 anime as well.

Yes! I loved Peter Pan as a kid, not for Peter, but for Captain Hook.

Captain Hook, obviously. Captain Jack Sparrow. Captain Barbossa. Han Solo.

I haven't finished Black Sails yet, but I liked most of what I've seen thus far.

I also love the characters from The Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard.

Pirates of the Caribbean is my guiltiest pirate-y pleasure. Bill Nighy's Davy Jones and Geoffrey Rush's Captain Barbossa make me utterly giddy.
