I'd heard of this show (a lot of my coworkers are hardcore fans) but hadn't really felt the urge to watch it.
Two summers ago, I was in one of those very rare moods where I'd watch anything (a lot of what's on TV doesn't ping me. I'm also quite sensitive to media overhype).
Scandal had just become available on Netflix streaming so I sat down to watch the first season (considering it's less than 10 episodes, I didn't think much about it). I marathoned the first two seasons for a few weeks and got really pumped for S3.
Didn't like it as much because Spoiler:the whole super spy!family thing didn't mesh as well with the Scandal 'verse. As much as I loved seeing Olivia's mom and dad sorta fight for Olivia's soul (while, at the same time, being really horrible people in general), there was a lot that I didn't like. Fitz was a complete jerk, Mellie (who was already an interesting character on her own right) was sidelined with a rape storyline as well as an affair with a really boring dude, Quinn couldn't make up her mind as to whether or not she wanted to leave OPA behind or not.
The worst, however, was Olivia's arc in S3. One of the reasons why I like this show (even as ridic as it can be) is that I know Olivia is going to kick butt and be (at the very least) two steps ahead of everyone else. S3 had the reverse: everyone else kept leaving Olivia in the dust. It was infuriating and painful to watch.
My fave character is Mellie. I really like her ambition and practicality, how she can deal with things with a cool head (for the most part). Mellie's monologues tend to be brilliant (partly because of the actress inner charm, I think).
Other than that, I have varying degrees of liking for the rest of the cast.
There was an episode last season that broke my heart in a million pieces. Spoiler:because it dealt with Huck's backstory and there was no way that wasn't going to be painful.

At this point, I'm cautiously excited. :)
