Saturday Social Post

Hello, television viewers! Welcome to the weekend!
Feel free to talk about any TV-topic you want, below is an optional texty to use.

I ran across this from tvline.com: Summer TV Calendar: 90+ Premiere and Finale Dates to Save for June/July
I think it's more updated than the one I ran across a couple weeks ago. *ahem*

What TV have you been watching?
Anything coming back in June that you're excited for?
Any renewals or cancelations that you found surprising?

I watched the first ep of Sense8 and even if I liked the diversity of it, there was nothing in the story or characters that grabbed me :(
I know that fans are complaining about the fact that it was practically NOT advertised.

I just finished season 2 in my Blue Bloods rewatch. Arrow and The Flash are finally on netflix, so I can catch up on the DC stuff.

I need to watch LAST season of Killjoys before I watch the new, LOL. I am so behind, school is kicking my ass, but I'm almost done!

Has anyone else watched Big Little Lies yet???

What TV have you been watching? STILL Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's getting more hopeless with each passing week, haha. (I've also been watching occasional Star Trek: Enterprise episodes tho.)
Anything coming back in June that you're excited for? Does House of Cards count? I know it was May 31st but reeaaaaaally. Heh. I so want see the 5th season but I have to wait for the DVDs. (I always wait for DVDs. But that's fine with me.)
Any renewals or cancelations that you found surprising? Everyone seems upset about a show called Sense 8 (???) being canceled at the moment so maybe that is a good answer? I dunno. I've never watched it but pretty much everyone I know is very upset and I dislike seeing people I know upset, so there, this is my answer here. :)

Do you plan to watch ST Discovery when it starts up?

[personal profile] mr_picard 2017-06-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not really. My interest in Star Trek is really very narrow, it's 99% TNG and 1% ENT/TOS, it's not Star Trek as a whole I like. I'll probably consider getting the show on DVD (once it's really cheap) if it turns out that a lot of people like it though. But for now my interest level in Discovery is pretty much zero.

I finished watching seasons six and seven of NCIS: LA, and then discovered I was missing files from season eight. So instead of continuing with that one, I started over with season one. (Because I had started my re-watch with season four...)

So, while I was asking around for someone to help me with the missing files, I finished season one and started with season two. Now I have all of season eight complete, but I'm still re-watching the old stuff.

I'm not complaining, though. Early show G is soooo pretty! I should have made a tally sheet to count all the times they put him into something blue, to make his eyes pop. Such beautiful eyes! Uhm, yeah. As you can see, I'm enjoying myself very much. *g*

Also, it's interesting to see which characters I disliked at first and grew to like later, and in which cases it's exactly the opposite.

And as of yesterday I'm on vacation, so my tv intake might increase slightly. *g*

Early G was so so very pretty. I tend to forget about NCIS:LA, then binge several seasons in a row then forget and then binge again, etc. (randomly, I love that every time I randomly tune in and watch a few episodes G's backstory winds up being a plot point.)

Same for me. I'm not watching it on TV, because it always runs too late and I have an early bedtime, so I buy it on DVD. But me buying DVDs doesn't mean I watch them right away. I have so much unwatched stuff in my collection! So yeah, currently binge watching the show again for the first time since April 2016. *g*

What TV have you been watching? I'm rewatching The Expanse at [community profile] rocinante, though I keep having to return the discs to the library and request them again so I'm never in synch with the group. I'm rewatching what I can of Timeless: episodes 1,2,12,13,14,15, and 16, because that's all that they left up On Demand. I think you can watch the entire season for free at Hulu but I hate that site. I'm several episodes behind on The Americans. Although this season is moving very slow, it's as grim as ever. Yay? It's not a spoiler, just a guess, but I think things are going to work out very badly for all of the characters, even the children, so it's getting harder and harder to watch. It's a series I've written fic for and it's ending next season, so I expect I'll slog through until the series finale. My husband and I are rewatching The Good Place. It's funny and adorable, and a wee bit creepy, too. I'm caught up with Madame Secretary. I love that show, and it didn't end on a cliff-hanger which was a nice change.
Anything coming back in June that you're excited for? Orphan Black and it's the final season. I think that might be it.
Any renewals or cancellations that you found surprising? I was surprised that Timeless was renewed, since it was cancelled three days earlier. To celebrate, a friend made a community: [community profile] timeless_lifeboat. Now all we need are some more members and some content. Given how awful season 10 was, I was shocked that The X-Files got renewed for an 11th season. The ratings were fantastic so that's what matters. I can't speak for others but I do not plan to watch it. This complaint goes back to Fall 2016 but I was surprised and disappointed that Aquarius was cancelled. I thought it was much better written and even acted than, well, any other drama I've been watching this year, including critic's darling The Americans. Not enough people agreed with me, so it got axed. There was a huge cliffhanger, too. Oh well.

I hear you about X-Files. I wasn't too surprised about the renewal because the comeback got a lot of attention and ratings don't have to be that high anymore for a show to succeed. But I don't plan to watch it either. I'd forgotten Orphan Black was starting up again, though that's a series I lost enthusiasm for a while ago. But I do plan to see the final season.
wendelah1: (Orphan Black)

[personal profile] wendelah1 2017-06-04 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The tenth season of XF could have been acceptable. Great might have been more than CC could deliver. The show declined dramatically beginning in season six. But it didn't have to be as bad as it was. CC made some very poor choices.

For me, Orphan Black is still very watchable because of Tantiana Maslany. She should have earned a shelf full of awards by now. Woman was robbed. Honestly, I forget that she's the only actor playing her clones. The plot has become tiresome, unfortunately. I think the writers ran out of ideas a season or two back.

[personal profile] yourlibrarian 2017-06-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, she's better than the material. I also agree I forget I'm looking at the same person. It seems that the sci-fi aspect and lack of clout from the network keeps her from getting the recognition she surely would have gotten on a major network show. And yes, I think the writers didn't have enough planned out as the story went on, so it entered this circular storyline. It happens to quite a few shows who end up with more seasons than story. That's why I'm glad the show is drawing to a close, though even in the last seasons there have been some great scenes and satisfying individual episodes.

Oh, I liked the new XFiles! Enough that I am happy to get a bit more. Although they need to put Krycek back in, lol
What didn't you like about it?
wendelah1: (I've got a bad feeling about this)

What I didn't like about The X-Files season ten - SPOILERS

[personal profile] wendelah1 2017-06-04 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything? No seriously.

Thank you for asking. I appreciate being given the opportunity to clarify my thoughts and clear my head. However, I don't want to upset you, or anyone else who feels differently, but this is going to be harsh. (Also, there are spoilers for the entire series.)

EDIT: Sorry if that made me sound like a pompous idiot. I probably take this stuff way too seriously for my own good.

1. I didn't even ship them--well, maybe I was a secret End-Shipper--but Chris Carter's lame excuse for separating Mulder and Scully was unacceptable. He wanted us to believe that Scully left Mulder because he was depressed and obsessed with his work? Really? Really? After everything they had been through together, I can't imagine her leaving him for something that--shallow.

2. As Mulder and Scully, Duchovny and Anderson had no chemistry. They had plenty of chemistry off-screen, when they were doing promos together, but once the cameras were rolling, zip. Nada. Worse yet, I thought Gillian Anderson phoned it in. I never believed in her character, which broke my heart. Dana Scully is my favorite character of all time. Duchovny was a little better but without that chemistry, his performance fell short, too. I know they can still act when they care about the material: see Aquarius and The Fall. Also, they are too old to be field agents. It strains credibility. With a threat that serious, they should have been given a real division, not a two-person joke. They should have been supervising and directing a fleet of younger agents, trying to unravel the conspiracy, and save humanity. This was no time to be chasing after were-monsters.

3. The scripts were mediocre, at best. At worst, they were repugnant. All of these guys used to be able to write, so what happened? And why are there just the same old white dudes in the writers room? It's the twenty-first century, Chris. Let's see. The Islamaphobia in "Babylon." The transphobia in "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster." The heartless way Mulder and Scully reacted to those suffering children in "Founder's Mutation." The way Carter turned Dana Scully, whose scientific rationalism defined her character, into a vaccine denier in "My Struggle, Part II" made me furious. In the final episode, Mulder and Scully spent less than five minutes together--yes, I timed it. I could have done without all of the silly fan service and in-jokes, too. I can go on (and on and on...) but you'd probably rather I didn't.

4. The secondary characters. Let's start with William. I hated that Scully got pregnant in the first place. In fact, I hated that plot arc from beginning to end. I did not need that character to return to torture Scully again. The CSM was burnt to a crisp in "The Truth" and should have stayed dead. Since you mentioned Krycek, Carter could have brought back him, if he wanted to resurrect a villain. Carter turned Monica Reyes into a traitor and a coward. He made the Lone Gunmen into a stupid joke. He gave Skinner next to nothing to say or do. If you're going to bring back characters, use them well, for pete's sake.

5. Last but by no means least, I absolutely despised the way CC swept away nine years and two movies of established canon. I get that the old canon got convoluted and hard to understand. He could have fixed it. There are fic writers who managed it--and they did it for free! Having the cliffhanger be The End of the World As We Know It was a big deal. I don't think Carter understands the magnitude of what he did, and I don't trust that he can fix the mess he made.

As far as I am concerned, season ten isn't canon at all. It is Chris Carter's craptastic AU for The X-Files. I was/am as passionate a fan of The X-Files as anyone currently in or out of the fandom. Over the years, I've written thousands of words of fic and helped run a half dozen communities. It gives me no pleasure to say this, but unless Chris Carter retires as a scriptwriter, season eleven is a no-go for me. I will stick to reading prufrock's love and amalnahurriyeh and leiascully and kiss me goodbye, and the many, many other wonderful writers, new and old, in our fandom.

Re: What I didn't like about The X-Files season ten - SPOILERS

[personal profile] phantomas 2017-06-05 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No apologies needed :) not pompous at all, just passionate :) which is nice to be allowed to see, so thanks.

I can only say - I wasn't really a fan of the series when it was on, I watched it after, and mostly I watched it as a conduit for Krycek (ops, my bad). In that sense, my knowledge and appreciation of the series is nowhere near yours :)
I always thought that making them a couple was a mistake (I hated it, and hated the baby storyline too). That said, they being separated now, not for lack of affection because that is still there, but becase it is hard to live with a depressed man...that I do accept and take in my stride, simply because I have been there and done that. And I like them better separated, so that works for me :)

And yes, I absolutely see your points re: SM being burned to a crisp! (I think Krycek could come back because he may have been cloned or something).

For a long time invested fan such as yourself, those are all valid points. I'm sorry it disappointed you :(

I do think, however, that fanfiction has spoiled many of us - there are amazing fanfiction writers capable of giving us 'verses better than the original - in that sense, I think most or all sequels will disappoint us, and the original creators are, after all, only human and not 'fans' :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

What TV have you been watching? Wonder Woman! Wait, what, that isn't TV? :P Just finished the finale of OuaT today. We finally started S2 of The Expanse.
Anything coming back in June that you're excited for? I don't know about excited but I plan to watch House of Cards. I'm still behind on at least 4 season finales and so far nothing new has popped up on the DVR.
Any renewals or cancelations that you found surprising? Sad to hear about Sens8. I'm guessing not enough viewers carried through from S1. I have to admit I almost didn't watch S2 either, it was chance. Yet when I did I went through it all in a week.

I have so many hopes for the new Star Trek series! Loved the original series and New Generation, the others were all sort of meh, for me (Enterprise was getting interesting but alas, got cut short).

What TV have you been watching?

I'm suffering through the new Twin Peaks season (S3). The first two episodes have been indulgent rubbish not even surreal, just slow and boring and non committal to any type of narrative.

Ep4 seemed a touch better, so I will endure, for nostalgia sake :)

Catching up with Vikings (love it), rewatching True Detective S1 and Daredevil S2 (the Punisher! :D)

Anything coming back in June that you're excited for?

The Walking Dead :) it's a mess, it is slow, it has passed its time, but I still like it :)

Game of Thrones, same as the above.

Any renewals or cancellations that you found surprising?

Not really, but I haven't been following the market.
